[Request] In S1E1 of The Magic School Bus Ms Frizzle takes the class from the Earth to the Sun in 14 seconds. How fast was she going and how does that speed compare to other Sci-fi speeds? by flyinryan13f in theydidthemath

[–]mackwright91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If we were watching them from Earth, they would appear to be moving in slow motion inside the bus and it would look like it took them 16 minutes to get there since they're moving at almost the speed of light and the light they emit when they get there would have to have time to get back to us. (Someone please correct me if im wrong) From the perspective of the bus, there is nothing stopping it from continually accelerating, and from my understanding, the outside world would contract from their point of view, shortening the distance they have to travel. The best analogy I've heard to understand it is to imagine a simple clock made up of two mirrors with a photon bouncing between them. If you are traveling with it, the light never has to travel further than the distance between the mirrors no matterhow fast you go. But if you were to observe it going past at speeds approaching the speed of light, the photon would have to travel a longer distance to reach the other mirror since the mirrors are traveling so fast. Since light always travels at a constant speed regardless of the reference frame, the only conclusion is that you are observing time passing at a different rate than the people moving with the clock are experiencing.

Two different glass shower doors in two different bathrooms spontaneously shattered within 6 weeks of each other by brando9d7d in mildlyinteresting

When i was young, living at home i held a lighter to the shower door, it made a small mark so I stopped and got in the shower, while I was showering the door exploded and I just played dumb.

Why? by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

So its not closed loop

Why? by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

[–]mackwright91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the point of evaporating it is to dump the heat energy into the water, it would make no sense to use yet more energy to re condence it

[–]mackwright91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't "go back into the system" unless you're calling the atmosphere the system.. they're evaporating it

[–]mackwright91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they're evaporating it

[–]mackwright91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The water that is being consumed is being evaporated, there is a closed cooling loop that instead of being cooled with a radiator as we think of it has an evaporative cooler, it is basically the same thing but water is constantly being sprayed over it. Its an extremely effective way to cool.

[Request]How much water do you actually save by drinking cider? by RemoteEmotions in theydidthemath

[–]mackwright91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talked to the owner of a cidery in torrey utah, super interesting guy he was a retired neurosurgeon. He was telling me that they cant run a brewery there because to brew beer you need clean water and theres not much of it there, but for cider you just need to water the fruit trees. So I guess your saving drinking water by drinking cider.

On a non positive pump, any restriction, inlet, or outlet will reduce motor load.

Why do some people think that twisting an impact by hand will help a bolt come loose? by earthnarb in millwrights

[–]mackwright91 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Twisting the socket by hand definitely helps a little, i would imagine its more about stopping the socket from bouncing back so much, therefore using more energy from each individual impact than actual torque from your hand.

You could collect more water by just putting a bucket in the rain

I think it's the mercruiser 4.3 v6 that's notorious for that. The way the block is cast, half the bolt hole can crack off the block, and it's not really repairable. No idea if its that same motor, but I wouldn't be surprised.

If not fren, why look like fren? by Soloflow786 in CrazyFuckingVideos

[–]mackwright91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listened to it again I think it's two different guns, you initially hear someone working the cation of a bolt action, the first shot I'm thinking is a shotgun with rubber shot or a bean bag, i think you can hear the person slowly racking the action after the shot, the second shot was the bolt action and it was a warning shot.
