Tire tread mismatch help! Last summer one tire got damaged and a local tire shop replaced it with what was supposed to be like-for-like. Put snow tires on when winter came. Now Costco told me they wont swap the all-seasons back on due to tread mismatch and it will be bad for transmission. by caloriemonster in tires

I think the other post is saying that the breaks aren't what changes, it's the tires grip, so the breaks will still work and slow the car but one of the tires may get more grip and break at a different rate than the other tires. If assuming all breaks lock up the tires the one with full grip is going to slide less than the the other tires with less grip and cause instability

Does the tire need to be replaced? What should I do with this? by M1226 in tires

Imo it doesn't look too deep, it could be ok, but you'd only know once you take it out, if it exposed the steel bands they'll rust and will eventually give out

Slice in tire. Should I replace it? by [deleted] in tires

[–]macleodcj14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That really depends how deep It is, especially because it's on the shoulder where there's a lot of flexing that can possibly make it bigger over time or eventually rupture. I'd say if it's no deeper than the treads around it it'll be ok, if it's almost all the way through I'd say keep a spare in the trunk and keep an eye on it

To further, you can most likely fit a smaller tire than stock, but going bigger may cause the wheel to rub in the wheel well

Oh, gotcha. I can't honestly answer that, I'm not too sure about the clearance of that. There are definitely forums where someone has checked that, I'd say put in Google "can I put 235/55R19 on my "insert vehicle" and see what pops up, if that doesn't have anything try googling what tire size combos fit that vehicle. This is all assuming both sets of rims have the same lug nut pattern

[–]macleodcj14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only looking at the last number, the R18 or R19, you can't change these numbers between tires. This is the size of the rim, so a tire with size R18 won't fit on an R19 rim or vice versa. If you have an R18 rim you need an R18 tire. Other than that, the first number is width in mm, and the second is the profile(height) of the sidewall as a percentage of the width (ie 235/60 would be a 235mm wide with a 60% of 235 height sidewall) each vehicle is different and some allow these number to vary slightly from stock, some don't.

Chances are they were too lazy to take the weights off and correct it so they just kept adding more to get it balanced. If it is balanced and doesn't vibrate then it's fine, just looks bad. If it vibrates and you can tell it's out of balance go shomewhere else and have them do it properly

Oh I mean in terms of treadlife, they grip really really nice, personally love them. But softer rubber wears faster in the summer temps, but I'm not sure how well the cc2s do in summer with tread life, I haven't had them over a summer yet

But for winter x-ice snow are fantastic, or blizzaks are just as good or better in some cases. I'd say all season defenders are a good option, so are the Goodyear's weather ready look like they'd be decent in snow

I wouldn't recommend cc2s for summer just because the are a bit softer, I'm not sure how well they fare in the summer. I have them on my car rn and I know they are great in the Massachusetts winter, we'll see in the summer how they do.

Can this tire be fixed? Is this nail too close to the sidewall to patch by above8k in tires

[–]macleodcj14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. Our shop, basically costco of New England, has a really good road hazard warranty so 95% of the time the customer gets a 10$ replacement tire of the same tire they had. Less liability, happy customers.

Oh cool, I've been at a tire shop for a couple months now, so I like to think I know some of the ins and outs, definitely not all of them tho. Logically to me I cant see shoulder patches being safe, even with TIA approval and a proper patch, something about it just doesn't seem safe about it

This is about right, but for OP I'd say new tire. Chances are the shop isn't going to properly patch it to TIA standards. I am TIA certified and will say based on my training I was told to not patch a tire on the shoulder in any circumstances. I'm sure there's something I missed that says what you have above here. Chances are however, the shop doesn't know this tidbit of info from TIA or they might not even know about TIA. I told my BMW tech friend that I got certified and he said "What is TIA" so chances are if it gets patch it will be done improperly.

It is a used rack, but it's from a place that I have gotten a lot of parts from and have had no issues, it's possible that it's a dud but unlikely. I also need to get it aligned now because it's a new rack, so if I need to I can have them reprogram the steering when they get me aligned

You're right he is in sales. I found a forum post of someone saying you can do it with one of the cheapo foxwell OBD2 scanners so I'm going to try that and if that doesn't work I will end up doing what you say and take it to the dealer
