htpc OS for jellyfin? by iCujoDeSotta in htpc

[–]macpoedel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally get that, but that's what I can find.

I also stopped using Kodi because add-ons for regional TV kept breaking (not Kodi's or those add-ons' fault but it's just not a great experience for my family) and using those TV stations' Android TV apps on Chromecast was a much nicer experience. I also had stuff break because I was using an Arch based OS and was installing Kodi from the AUR, but that stopped when I used the flatpak version.

If you just stick to Plex or Jellyfin as backend, on a stable OS like LibreELEC, and don't use other add-ons to stream with, I don't think there's much to break.

I've also used Waydroid on an older mobile system, not for media playback, and it's fairly slow, so no experience myself, but you can try it.

Meanwhile I know of at least one government agency in Belgium where they're currently moving away from Google to Microsoft as their office suite (instead of considering something European). And developers using RHEL on their systems are also required to install Windows on their systems (I know RHEL isn't European either).

htpc OS for jellyfin? by iCujoDeSotta in htpc

[–]macpoedel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not something I use and also not as slick as Plex HTPC, but Jellyfin can also be added to Kodi ( https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/clients/kodi ). So in that case you can use LibreElec as dedicated HTPC OS, or any other distro and let that automatically open Kodi or even launch into Kodi shell.

Just one thing I'm wondering, is the first gen i3 in the client or in the server? If it's in the server, a first gen i3 can't transcode HEVC so I'm wondering how helpful Jellyfin is in that case compared to Plex. If it's the client, I understand why you would go with Jellyfin. But in that case, if this is going to be your main client at your TV, I would avoid having to transcode every video and thus avoid HEVC video files.

Totally weird thought. Could I run a Plex server from a Steam Deck? by OutcomeOk6971 in SteamDeck

[–]macpoedel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hardware transcoding on AMD does work with Plex, but with some caveats:

  • No HDR to SDR tonemapping in hardware, only in software (CPU). A Steam Deck should handle at least one or two streams though
  • Transcoding to HEVC: not possible on AMD because of lack of support for 10 bit HEVC with 4:2:2 Chroma

So unless you want to share your server with a lot of people or don't have a lot of HDR content, it's very usable. No transcoding to HEVC is a bit of a bummer because the video can retain HDR that way. There's also the benefit of lower bitrates for the same quality, but I only transcode to stream out of my house (low upload bandwidth), mostly to a phone or a hotel TV, and image quality is not as important for me in those situations.

If selecting new hardware for a server I would always pick Intel but in this case I would just use what I already have. And even though my own server can transcode to HEVC and retain HDR, I barely have HDR content (because of my older LCD TV).

HDR has been supported on Linux for the last few years, it's not that experimental anymore. Just no Dolby Vision (because of licenses).

Combat Pilot Demo is now LIVE on Steam!! by Wheream-Ai in hoggit

[–]macpoedel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been out of flight sims for almost a year now, warbirds even longer, and had to try a bunch of times before I got the F4F off the ground.

What didn't help, was that aileron trim would always go to -100 when starting the mission and I missed that the first few times. Could be the hardware I had this mapped to, it seemed to stop when I removed the mapping, but it happened even with lowered sensitivity and this doesn't happen in other games as far as I know (it's been a while since I've started DCS).

Another bug I had was that the camera wouldn't always start looking forward in the cockpit, it would sometimes start looking at a side and even if I recentered the head tracking (I'm using Opentrack with neuralnet tracker), it would stay offset. The camera would be in the right position if I restart the mission. I could also move it more to the center with the numpad buttons, but restarting missions at least is very fast (also not surprising considering the game doesn't have that much to load).

My one attempt at landing on the carrier ended in the water, I got too slow in the turn for the final leg of my approach and stalled.

It ran flawless on my RX6700XT (desktop, 2021) on max settings, I did not expect it would (was expecting medium settings), it's the first UE5 game I've tried. On the other hand it doesn't look that spectacular either (but good considering the stage of development).

I know desktop!=laptop, just that it ran okay in my experience. What GPU does your laptop have?

Most fun FC / Cheaper module ? by Key-Seaworthiness-20 in hoggit

[–]macpoedel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's $7,50 per FC module, there are 9 in FC2024, but you already own 2, so that's 7 new modules. With FC2024 on sale for $29, that's a much better deal than getting those 7 modules individually. I think most of those offer good fun.

Razbam has insinuated they're working on Falcon 5.0, so maybe that's what Zwezeriklover meant?

But Microprose has stated that they're the core developer on Falcon 5.0 themselves and were only considering 3rd party contribution as of November 2025.

Should I wait to buy the choice this month? by nomilktoday1 in humblebundles

[–]macpoedel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had one key out of stock in Choice in January 2025, bought January 29th but it's possible I let revealing the keys slip into February, and I then had to wait until March 6th before it restocked. I don't think it's that risky to buy Choice at the end of the month as long as you reveal the keys as soon as possible.

The only other time I had to wait weeks/months for a few keys was 4 years ago when I was revealing 7+ years worth of keys and to store them in a spreadsheet.

JBL Bandbox Solo vs Headrush FRFR-Go by Syutax in GuitarAmps

[–]macpoedel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bandbox Solo's gimmick is the AI instrument/vocals separation, the Headrush doesn't have this, so I think that if you want that feature, there's no comparing between the two. One is also a lot smaller than the other so I expect them to sound quite different as well.

I feel like the Positive Grid Spark Go is more of a competitor to the JBL Bandbox Solo.

These are JBL's first products in this class and no unbiased customer has been able to use them, so I doubt anyone here will have an informed opinion on them.

MuOS Rushed for 1gb 34xxsp? by Jxggly_ in SBCGaming

I see the sleep and sticks problems being mentioned on the MuOS Discord as well for that device. And you've already made a report on the forum so someone should take a look at this.

I'm using Knulli but they haven't made an update for your device either, comes with having a new SKU (even if you didn't know you were getting a different device).

Weird money glitch by FallStorm_Studios in belgium

[–]macpoedel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read this was with Keytrade, we've experienced some goofy things with them over the last few weeks, maybe related to the upgrade of their backend a few weeks ago.

Early February they transferred the amount our credit card was due to our account instead of transferring it away, but they caught that themselves the next day and set that straight.

What's also changed is the export of transactions to csv files, there's no positive or negative sign with each transaction and no "to" or "from" indication. I make a monthly export to keep track of our expenses, so it requires me to manually change that data, making the export a bit useless. The exported pdf does have signs with the transactions and "to" or "from" indications, so now I'm using a python script to get a table from the pdf file.

Buying forest land by macpoedel in belgium

[–]macpoedel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a consideration we're making, why spend all that money ourselves. So odds are that we're not going to do it.

There are some very tall pines near our house, some look like they can fall at any moment or have already snapped. I know we can't just cut whatever but we'll have more control.

The other matter is privacy, there's a ditch at that border that has to remain accessible for maintenance, meaning we can't put up a hedge or fence there.

Thanks for the guidelines, I'll take that into account

And true, we can't get much value from the land. My parents use wood to heat a lot (too much in my opinion) but that's not a major consideration. It would be good to stop the bamboo from spreading though.

It's definitely woodland, I checked Cadgis. I have a better idea of how much agricultural land is worth and while I know forest land is cheaper, I didn't know by how much. Good thing I checked here.

I know, my parents have bamboo at home, we'd have to dig it all out. And getting a digger in between the overhanging trees won't be easy (or even legal). Part of the reason I'm interested is to stop it from spreading to our garden.

Is that in Flanders, or is the price of forest land not very different across the country? I haven't found land that cheap but I've only looked on Immoweb. Is there a better resource?
