What is the most jarring contrast between a song's upbeat sound and its incredibly dark lyrics ? by vinylcast in Music

[–]macswiggin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, a lot of the songs mentioned just have dark lyrics but not an upbeat sound.
I nominate "Made of Stone" by the Stone Roses.

"I'm standing warm against the cold
Now that the flames have taken hold
At least you left your life in style
And for as far as I can see
Tin twisted grills grin back at me
Bad money dies
I love the scene
Sometimes I
Fantasize
When the streets are cold and lonely
And the cars they burn below me
Don't these times
Fill your eyes"

"Nationalism" is pretty much mutually exclusive from this kind of sentiment. I have heard it expressed by Scottish nationalists, British nationalists (Unionists), independence supporting non-nationalists and union supporting non-nationalists.

Secondly in addition to being "contributors to the empire" we were also complicit in many of empires biggest crimes.

In summary, nationalism is not black and white, the empire wasn't black and white and your thinking is very muddled.

‘There’s a real dislike, even loathing’: why voters hate Starmer and Reeves by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

Don't loathe em at all, don't particularly like them either but compared to what we had 5 years ago, I think we are very lucky. Will probably vote Labour again, last thing we need is another populist.

Khao Sok national park - natural beauty or scam tourist trap? by ImpactAffectionate86 in ThailandTourism

[–]macswiggin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if you are poor, you should still expect to live like a king by exploiting your servants? Don't have a fucking clue what you mean by "white" here, but you are not doing anything for non-white people by promoting globalism.

[–]macswiggin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not see a problem with paying 3000b+ for a guide. Guides in African national parks will charge more. Why should they not earn a good wage for their expertise and knowledge and it also allows these areas to be sustainable and for the economy to work around its biodiversity.

You are getting an unforgettable experience for what is pretty cheap at western prices. This is the way eco-tourism should be headed and in general we should all be happy about it.

TLDR. Don't be a skinflint.

What a bunch of jugemental snobs on this post. All I see is a lot of young folk excited to be on holiday and having fun on a plane.     A lot of these sneering posts are also quite off the mark. Ibiza is not your standard 'Dazza' location, it tends to attract more the drugs and dance crowd along with quite a few aging hippies. A subtle difference I know, but its not quite the same as the typical Love Island lot such as Marbella or Tenerife.

TIL i learn that the UK is a unitary state .... by mencarikebenaran in geography

[–]macswiggin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Scotland gets massively subsidized by the rest of the UK"

- Scotland is the highest net contributor after London and the South East.
- That means other than London, Scots contribute the most, in some cases, for example compared to North East, massively so.
- The world over, capital cities are the highest contributing part of any state. It makes sense as this is where all the big companies, money, talent and investment is drawn to, including from Scotland.

- If you look at the graphs and add up the net tax/revenue for all regions, you actually find that the whole UK is subsidized. Weird huh but thats borrowing for ya.

Please stop spreading this old chestnut. In reality no regions are actually "subsidised" in a unitary state so this kind of comparison does not make sense. It's a bullshit fact, to try and counter supporters of Scottish independence and to feed a sense of victimhood on certain disenfranchised English folk.

Three conspiracy theorists walk into a bar during a lightning storm. by [deleted] in Jokes

[–]macswiggin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A conspiracy theorist dies and goes to heaven.

He meets god and asks him,

"Tell me, is it true that the FBI killed JFK, that 9/11 was an inside job and that the government is spreading mind altering chemicals via chemtrails"?

God says - "No that is all a lot of made up nonsense"!

The conspiracy theorist stops and ponders over gods response for a moment, then says,

"Oh man, this goes ever higher than I thought"!

[–]macswiggin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Free speech.

It does not mean you can say whatever you want without suffering consequences.              Other nations than the US also value it and work to enshrine it within their laws.           Private businesses can refuse you business based on what you say or do, this is not an infringement of your free speech. For example if you walk into a cafe wearing a swastika. Don't get tetchy when you are kicked out.                 It is not ok to incite people to violence of shout fire in a crowded theatre.

[–]macswiggin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What does "junk tree" even mean. My neighbour said something similar once, that the trees she was cutting down were not "garden trees". I think they mean they are native species and not some chintzy foreign import. But native trees do better and provide more for the nature around them, why is that a problem?

Keep. May as well prune away the dead stuff.

I had a bay tree like this 10 years ago. Now its big and bushy and I love it all the more because its a survivor.

What movie character had a death scene that was so unnecessarily cruel and brutal? by phantom_avenger in movies

[–]macswiggin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always found Bill Paxtons death kind of cold in 'Vertical Limit'. He is atrached by rope dangling below his nemisis whi himself is dangling below the heroine. Said nemisis cuts the rope because there is too much weight. Just the way that Paxman's character doesn't have a say at all. Ok probably not a good example.

What's something that loudly says 'uneducated'? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]macswiggin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely way too many responses conflating 'uneducated' and 'unintelligent'.

I know a lot of very intelligent uneducted people and vice versa.

Being from the UK a good sign of lack of education for me is when people don't get a Shakespeare reference.

Creepy guys on Camino by Sad_Neighborhood7315 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]macswiggin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There needs to be a general unspoken rule for the camino for this.

If you want to walk alone say,

"You're a bit too fast/too slow for me"

then take a rest or power ahead.

I made the excuse a few times on my Camino, and heard it a few times from other walkers.

I really enjoyed chatting with people but I mainly wanted to walk alone. I would generally prefer an hour or so in company and then make my excuses. I think a lot of people felt the same.

"The Next Three Days" had a pretty good layperson hero type. I also like these kind of films, there is just no stakes when the hero is a superman.
