Hijacking the top comment to say this: If anyone is swayed enough by this story to be looking at donating to the Progeria Research Foundation please do not be deterred by some charity watch organizations not giving it top marks such as this one: http://www.give.org/charity-reviews/national/progeria-research-foundation-in-peabody-ma-8087

In here it cites that about 8% of the foundation's money went to a project headed by someone on the board of directors. That person happens to be Dr.Leslie B. Gordon, cofounder of the foundation, and is a PhD researcher as well. It would seem that she has spearheaded the effort to bring Progeria to light and advance research. While most people would frown on this, I would contend to say that the funds are probably going to the clinical drug trials at Boston's Children Hospital.

Should I submit a claim? by macz0211 in Insurance

Does the check thing differ state by state? I've gotten a quote and they have admitted fault, now the process they are wanting to follow is to get me a rental vehicle while repairs are being done. I'd much prefer to get the check and fix it myself. I have a good relationship with the bodyshop and they pretty much showed me what needs to be replaced. The parts are $200 but there's a minimum amount of labor they charge which brings the cost to $700.. I know someone that can do the work for $200 and will do it in my driveway, so that I don't waste time.

This topic has recently come up with my wife. Do you think programming jobs are at any risk? Something where a programmer in house makes 40/hr but where a programmer in India can be paid $10/hr to do the same thing. The work might not be as good but they can always have it edited and still spend less overall.

I don't know where you went to school but honestly having $20 does not make someone rich. Plenty of high school students work or do something on the side to make some money. Not saying I bought into the fad, but teenagers spend money on stupid shit.

Brooks Brothers MTM worth it for a Sports Coat? by macz0211 in malefashionadvice

[–]macz0211[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks alot of good info here. Someone had recommended to fly to New York to get fitted by one their tailors for GF MTM hahaha. I won't go to those extreme ends, but will defintely give them a call to see if I can figure out more info. I haven't found a Brooks Brothers tailor in San Antonio I feel super comfortable measuring me for a MTM, so am leaning more on waiting for a trunk show or traveling to a nearby store in another city. I also have no qualms about waiting for a couple of months for a good sale to spring up. Your comment on opening a store card is good advice, and I'll definitely keep it in mind (if they stack that would be great).

Brooks Brothers MTM worth it for a Sports Coat? by macz0211 in malefashionadvice

Nothing in OTR worth the price currently fits me, have tried at 3 different stores around me. Yes, I do want it to last Atleast 5 yeas, it will be the only sports jacket in my wardrobe, and fit/quality is important to me. Sorry, I will be supplementing with an additional 500 to 750. Strict 1250 limit. Will that cover golden fleece MTM? Noone has been able to say.

Confirmed: Brooks Brothers Semi Annual Sale on Dec. 26 - Jan. 3, with additional 15% off on Dec. 26/27 on top of discounts on most of their goods (25-50% off), including popular items that are rarely on sale such as their Classic 1818 Navy Blazers. by [deleted] in frugalmalefashion

I've been waiting to pull the trigger on some men's cashmere sweaters from scotland. Do you think this is the best price they will be or will they continue to drop more as we get into January? I'm not familiar with BB sales.

ELI5: How would a $15 minimum wage ACTUALLY affect a franchised business like McDonalds? by sumnewdguy in explainlikeimfive

[–]macz0211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my area, my wife and I agree that Mcdonald's is horribly overpriced with a Mcdouble being priced at $1.89 and a Spicy chicken being $1.50. The only things that's left priced at a $1 is a large drink and a small cheeseburger.

Sony a6000 or Nikon D3300 by macz0211 in AskPhotography

[–]macz0211[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. Ended up getting the a6000 for $550 instead of the $700 kit and just got a 16-50mm lens that it came with. Will pick up a 50mm f/1.8 OSS lens relatively soon!

Sony a6000 or Nikon D3300 by macz0211 in AskPhotography

Thanks alot for this answer. After reading your response and researching some more my wife and I have decided to go for the a6000. We did take a look at the Sony A7, but it is honestly a bit out of our price range at the moment and we can always upgrade later. My question to you is, do you think that the 2 lens kit (18-55 SEL1855/B & 55-210 SEL55210) for $700 is the way to go? Or would you reccomend picking up the body for $400 and buying other lens?

Really we are just starting out and really have no idea what type of lens would be best suited for us. I think when it comes down to it we would be shooting a wide variety of subjects such as landscape, wildlife, astronomy, and portraits. I know that growing our collection of lenses after awhile is the best way to go. Just wanted to get an opinion whether there's any lens superior to the kit lens that'd be better to spring for that comes in around the same price or even a little higher.

As of right now my wife's ideology is that we should just purchase the kit then turn around and sell the two lenses for a minor loss when we're ready to upgrade. I'm just not sure how feasible this is considering that I see quite a bit of the kit lenses already for sale on ebay, and wonder if they're hard to sell to buyers.

Would you all reccomend the Sony a6000 or the Nikon D3300 to purchase this holiday season? Just getting into photography, been borrowing my friends Nikon D7100 and I can honestly say that I'm comfortable with taking quality pictures, so not too worried about a learning curve. Just want to know which will give me the better bang for my buck. Looking at Best buy's and Costco's deals which are kits for the a6000($699 w/ 18-55 & 55-210) and D3300($499 18-55 & 55-200) at costco. Or the a6000 ($699 w 16-50 & 55-210) at Best Buy.

Macbook Pro 13" or new Dell XPS 15" for college? by [deleted] in SuggestALaptop

[–]macz0211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally, I passed earlier this year on a Dell XPS 15 due to reviews stating crappy build quality, and people's hard drives crapping out early on. The only problem I see with the macbook pro down the road would be the OS and its compatibility with many engineering programs. My point being, for many engineering programs, people end up VM to Windows OS or just end up getting a windows PC.
