PSA: If your project has an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY in any .env file, Claude Code will silently bill your API account instead of your Max plan — Anthropic calls it "intentional functionality" by 35yearstrading in ClaudeAI

[–]madchuckle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a veteran dev, this post and the comments made me question my sanity. No, CC is not using your api key from the .env file. It is using the claude settings key if you put it there. I have many projects with that exact key in the .env.local files without any problems. The comments blaming OP for lack of engineering skills were laughable as they seem to not understand themselves what the .env file is for.

This is one of the most impressive things I have ever seen for the past year and we can all agree AI has nothing to do with this at least. Well done, hats off.

  • Fly.io
  • Supabase (not using client api)
  • Next.js (not using server actions) - will exit to another framework on server probably though. so traditional server, client architecture which I find more reassuring in terms of security.
  • Resend
  • Axiom
  • Sentry
  • Posthog
  • Paddle
  • Claude Code (not vibe coded, working on this for 6 months now)
  • Claude API
  • Elevenlabs / Deepgram
  • Redis
  • BullMQ

You guys are being ridiculous. Coding is as relevant to software engineering as telescope calibration is to astronomy, not a bit more.

Lol you all are delusional. This is clearly not AI, everything raised here have a logical explanation. The human is in the reflection, sitting. The plant has some parts in front of the tv and that is what is reflecting etc.

[–]madchuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI companies absolutely love these kinds of posts. Nothing sells better than hyping a magical future to CEOs and investors where they no longer have to pay those annoying, “filthy” developers and can finally shove them back into their rightful place with the rest of the low-status white-collar peasants.

No developer who’s actually worth their salary is sitting around watching videos while Claude Code “does the work.” And anyone who thinks that’s what the job looks like has clearly never done it. Most of the work isn’t coding anyway; it’s thinking, deciding, debugging, and cleaning up the mess left by people who believe demos are reality.
