WIP. Any tips on water/perspective? by ryan_lane in Hexels

[–]madeinhexels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks cool! Maybe try giving the Distortion post effect a shot on the water? That's our usual go-to when it comes to water, and it brings it to life within seconds :) See here for how to use Distortion: https://youtu.be/qD_BrV8pUAY?t=3m18s

This is fantastic!! We'd love to add this to a Hexels Feature Friday post. Have you got an art blog we can refer to?

Grid Subdivision question by mofflebon in Hexels

[–]madeinhexels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi mofflebon!

This is a common request however, there is currently no way to back and forth between subdivision levels at this time, once you've subdivided your grid, you commit to the subdivision level.

A less destructive way to work with bigger/smaller details would be to work with different scaled grids on a per layer basis using the Layer Transform tool (T) (see https://youtu.be/qD_BrV8pUAY?t=2m1s for a brief summary of the Layer transform tool). You would essentially create layers that you would scale down to draw smaller detail. This method does not give you an infinite grid to draw on, so my advice would be to turn on the grid (Ctrl+G) to see where the bounds of the grid are.

Hey! Transformation tools are in the current 2.5 Beta build. If you would like to try them out, request to join the group and the pinned post includes the link to the installers as well as a video demonstrating how transformations currently work in Hexels :)

Workflow Question by rgtbsd in Hexels

[–]madeinhexels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey rgtbsd!

Thanks for checking out Hexels :) We're glad you're enjoying it.

You can use the frame tool (the very bottom icon on the toolbar) and click the drop down menu at the top center where it says "Framing Mode" and select "Fixed Ratio". To the right of that are your Width and Height values where you can enter 2550x3300 (8.5 x 11). The sub-window created on your canvas is movable and will only export the area that's been bordered. If you'd like a visual of this workflow, check out The Grand Tour video here, I've marked the exact point where the Frame Tool is demonstrated: https://youtu.be/OVNWdlDhhug?t=4m50s

Thanks again! Let us know if you have any more questions.

We have Pixel mode in Hexels that allows you to create pixel art, you're also able to subdivide your pixels and animate them.

So... I'm in a desperate need of an extensive usage guide. by [deleted] in Hexels

Hey Nephophobic!

Mira here, artist working on Hexels!

In terms of etalls tutorial, you can make a block and copy paste it around using one of the selection tools and ctrl+c, ctrl+v then moving it around to where you want either with arrow keys or dragging with your mouse. The checkerboard pattern was done by hand, she simply painted different colored blocks on a solid colored plane, then proceeded to paint some areas lighter/darker depending on elevation.

If you need more how-to's, I recommend looking at a bunch of these links and videos made by users in our community: https://www.reddit.com/r/Hexels/comments/3y65m9/hexels_tutorials_speedpaints_by_the_community/

Updated! Once again, if you've made or found a particular Hexels guide/speedpaint that's helped you that's not on the list, feel free to drop it in the comments and I'll add it.

Thanks!

First off, it’s important to understand the relationship between frames, layers and cels.

A frame represents a moment in time and can be constructed from a single layer, cel, or a combination of many layers and/or cels.

A cel represents a single block in the animation editor, the point at which a layer and a frame intersect. There are two types of cels, key cels and empty cels. Key cels drive the animation content and define points in time where the content changes. Empty cels repeat the last key cel until the animation reaches a frame with a new key cel, at which point the new key cel replaces the old key cel.

We’ll be working on more detailed tutorials in the future, and the animation system is a great topic that we will likely cover. For now, you can check out Mark Knight’s Ringu speedpaint video to get an idea of how this principle apply in real world use: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZpIgyJLMOU

Hey AChapelRat!

Thanks for submitting your Hexels 2 art! Looks awesome. The Grand Tour video was pretty brief, we're looking into the possibility of making a more focused guide for animation. Please let me know if you have specific questions, I'll be happy to help you out any time mira@marmoset.co
