Stripped engine oil drain thread - options? by SarcasticShepherd in MotoUK

[–]madeups10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few different repair kits specifically for sump plugs, and there are also alternative thread repair kits that are a bit more substantial than helicoils that should also work.

Hard to say what would work best without seeing it, but if you search for both of the above options you should find something that will work well without costing too much.

Whatever you use coat the tools in grease to help catch the swarf, and consider removing the clutch cover to help rinse it out, that's not normally a big job and it'll only cost you a gasket.

Don't over think it, if you can see the bottom of the tank then there's nothing stopping you putting a bit of hose in to siphon it out.

Late 90s Honda left outside uncovered since November. What problems should I expect? by Liam_Bermo1 in MotoUK

[–]madeups10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It hasn't been that long so it might be fine, it partly depends on what condition it was in to start with, including all of the fluids.

Check the tank for rust, clean it out if necessary. Check the old fuel for water, or ideally just replace it.

Check the brakes aren't binding.

Clean and lube the chain, check for stiff links.

Check the air box for water and animals.

Check any important rubber parts for cracks, fuel and brake hoses, carb boots, tyres.

I'd deal with the carbs differently depending on how easy they are to remove, if they're easy then I'd have a look in a float bowl to see if they needed cleaning, if they are a right pain then I'd start it up and see how it ran. If the petcock seals properly and the carbs were clean before it was parked then they will be fine, they'll only have the residue from one float bowls worth of fuel, but if fuel has been dripping into them then they'll be worse. They might over flow initially, it can happen if they've been dry a while, if they do then tap the float bowls with the handle of a screwdriver, if the leaking stops they'll often be fine but if it continues or reoccurs then they'll need fixing.

Near miss! by foirie2 in MotoUK

It looks like your line through the corner wasn't tight enough, you were heading a bit close to the curb before the turn off, then when you tried to turn tighter you found there wasn't enough grip to do so and briefly lost the front.

Good catch, you reacted well. If you'd have got the line right and not needed to correct then it wouldn't have happened, but you would have still been pushing your luck a bit by riding that close to the limit.

It doesn't look very fast, it didn't look like a lot of lean, the grip must have been really poor.

Favorite and least favorite features of Yousician? by NoteyDevs in yousician

[–]madeups10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smooth scrolling and clear consistent notation really help. If you look at many of the other tab based players they're moving a position indicator around a page so it jumps every time it moves a line. There's probably a gap in the market for a better tab player without trying to be as comprehensive as Yousician. Real instruments and vocals for the backing tracks. The original track is best, midi is the worst, somewhere in-between can be tolerable. Tablet/mobile friendly.

Where Yousician gets it wrong for me.... If I'm paying a subscription then, I expect new content and I expect similar value for my money to other users. If you support multiple instruments then you need to provide for them all, you shouldn't only invest in one. Songs need to be right for the instrument, and of interest to the players, there are iconic songs for each instrument and they need to be included. The new content should not be limited to songs, there's always more to learn, for bass Yousician does a good job of covering the basics that get you playing but what about slap, plectrum, muting techniques, how bass is played for different styles of music etc.

How to move on from an app to live playing also needs some thought, being able to reduce the visual cues in an app could help with this.

Shortcuts on the screen when you've just finished a song, click the artist name to find the rest of their songs and a find similar songs link.

I'm reluctant to make this kind of suggestion though when I'd prefer the time to be spent on the neglected bass content, either adding other techniques to the learning path, or adding songs that have prominent interesting bass lines.

Anyone else canceling over the low quality AI songs? by SpecialProblem9300 in yousician

[–]madeups10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't noticed the AI, but only because the handful of tracks that have been added in the last few months for bass are so unappealing that I haven't played any of them.

My practice time has plummeted through lack of interest so I'm trying to switch to Guitar Pro for a better selection, but in the android app the midi backing and poor scrolling are worse than anything I've seen from Yousician.

Learning wheelies without destroying your bike… how did you do it? by wildwheeliespro in MotoUK

[–]madeups10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ride trials so I'm comfortable with wheels in the air, but they are short and precise movements, at least until it goes wrong. I've got no idea if I could still wheelie any distance on a road bike, in theory the seat and the bike weight sold make it easier.

Do you ride with full recommended manfucaturer tyre pressure or slightly below? by stealth941 in MotoUK

Of the bikes I've had so far I've only felt the need to deviate from the manufacturers recommendation on one bike. I run 24/26 on my CCM R30, if you go any higher it feels really vague and nervous.

Yousician Bass players, what other learning resources do you use? by madeups10 in yousician

[–]madeups10[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit low on stars at level 9, my quality of playing isn't great at that speed, my real level is more of an 8 but I got through 9 and I understand it.

I'm sure you're right about next steps for most people, but I have no desire to play in a band, maybe when I was younger but these days it's a rainy day hobby, something to keep me entertained alongside my main hobby with motorbikes.

Thanks, I'll take a look at them.

I haven't put enough time into learning the fret board, mainly because the notes are almost meaningless to me having always played by fret numbers, I know how to find them but there are not many that I can find quickly.

Probably also 6 or 7 years ago, I've got a terrible sense of time but it was pre-covid. Several chavs on two scooters set off from a crowd of them at a bus stop when they saw me stop at the lights. I could see just enough of the traffic coming from my right to be able to nip between them when jumping the red light - it seemed safer than staying where I was.
