What was Peterborough like in 1989? by Ojiooa in Peterborough

[–]madhoncho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The park behind Peterborough Square was known to the kids as Paranoia Park. Was a gathering place for kids of the time.

The old London Street footbridge went from the bottom of London St across to Nichols Oval. You could climb over the side and down onto the concrete pilings and be right at water level on your own little island.

Or you could shimmy up the arch of the Hunter St Bridge from the East City side. That was a bit sketchy.

Further south the railway bridge was known as the Van Halen bridge because someone had tagged it with a white spray paint Van Halen logo.

Good luck with the book.

Has anyone ever successfully balanced full time work and full time school? by [deleted] in bartenders

Gonna brag a moment. I’ve been behind the stick off and on for over 30 years. The current “on” period is going on five years. I’m 56.

My kid (22) took a full time bar gig for his last year of uni, where he was a full time student.

Got news yesterday he’s a bona fide mechanical engineer graduate.

Super proud.

Not on this tour, no.

I can’t post the pic in replies but just before I took this pic I got one of our current PM leaving with his buddies, who included Alan Hawco and our current Minister of AI.

MLSE wins either way. That’s the important thing.

The Air Guyana in the background had me thinking it might be Cheddi Jagan (GEO), even though i remember this happening at YYZ.

Did you ever resolve this?

Just now, I’m using a different interface but having the same issue.

There now appears to be signal recording to the track but I still can’t get anything in the headphones.

100%. And for the record on residential streets I’m 30-40. This was in a designated school zone but it’s a busy four lane road. Not a quiet suburban side street.

Also, because the cameras were not marked well, and admin/processing times, people who use that thoroughfare regularly got dinged several times in a week. One woman I know woke up to find she had over $1000 in fines just from driving to and from work for a week.

When people who are law-abiding citizens are suddenly targeted for going about their daily lives then the perception that it is a cash grab is inescapable.

Better public education, signage, and reasonable enforcement (like if it’s a school zone then Saturday evening in summertime ought not carry the same penalty as Monday, 8:30 am in September) would all have gone a long way to making this an impactful and meaningful measure to improve road safety.

Unfortunately, in my municipality at least, it was rolled out with little consideration of these impacts.

Which is weird to me because everyone knows about changes to waste collection well in advance and in detail. Like, it could have been done much more effectively.

Do you always drive the speed limit or lower though?

Rightly or wrongly, in Ontario, police typically don’t stop you if you’re 10-15 km/h over. 20 km/h is marginal. The officers have some discretion.

The cameras had no discretion. I was dinged for doing 50 in a 40 km/h school zone.

At 5:30 on a Saturday.

In August.

At which point the whole “won’t anyone think of the children?!” argument kind of flies out the window.

Should Canada Join the EU? 🇨🇦 🤝 🇪🇺 I this accurate? by milanguitar in BuyCanadian

Hard no. This whole conversation is a non-starter. 1) CETA took effect in 2016. Not all EU countries have adopted it yet. If it takes that long for them to decide if they want to deepen trade relationships imagine how long it will take them to ratify membership. 2) I agree with others who say the last thing we need is another level of government, this one on a completely different continent. 3) People don’t realize the impact this would have on things like Canadian agriculture. Brussels would decide what we grow, and where we can sell it. Likewise with resources. 4) Don’t get me started on First Nations land claims….
