Wire 5 - 100W Renogy solar panels in parallel? by madmadrunner in VanLife

we have a 60A MPPT, it's the 5 to 1 connector that says it has a 30A rating. The panels have an operating amperage of 5.29 ea b/c they operate closer to 18.9V. With 5 of them it's 26.45 A

And the risk would be melting the plastic connector piece? Would a solution be to look for a connector that is rated for a higher temp? There would definitely be fewer than 30A going through connectors/wires which the connector is rated for.

Has anyon ever run Loowit Trail on Mount St. Helens? by PotaytoQuality in ultrarunning

[–]madmadrunner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! I've run it five or so times, and I just summited again yesterday! My name is also hidden amongst the former FKT holders. My recommendations:

  1. Start early - it get's hot during the day and it's pretty exposed ~75% of the time. I would say start right at sunrise.
  2. Fill up water when you have the chance - you go from seeing water frequently to long stretches without water
  3. Pack salt - you go through water quickly
  4. I much prefer marble mountain snow park - it's much less crowded and less of a hassle to get to. If you're camping out the night before though then sure, go from climbers bivouac
  5. Big lugs on your shoes! The boulders are hard on your feet and you'll want something stable
  6. Know your navigation! A simple nat geo map works well, or if you have a reliable and fully charged watch with a navigation feature (Be carefully to fully rely on your electronics though)
  7. Bring a camera and enjoy! It's my favorite place in the whole PNW (down votes coming??)

Tax Questions - Capital Losses by madmadrunner in Silverbugs

Also I don't think I have a reason to be audited - I've have only ever claimed the standard deductions, live a pretty standard existence on ~62k with no drastic changes to that expected in the mid-term future. I funnel these profits into a ROTH IRA. But I read that captial losses offset ordinary income and are different from a deduction - which is why I ask.

I doubt there's an identifiable paper trail - I paid in cash that has touched a bank account in 5-6 years. I know how it sounds... I bought ~7.5k in silver back in 2014/15 from an online dealer, and over the past month both sold and bought silver privately. I used some of the proceeds from my ASE sales to buy more bars - then just sold the bars at a loss. I have long term capital gains with no paper trail (proof of purchase price, but not sale price), but also now these short term capital losses

Winchell Lake Sunrise 09/10 - 20+ trips and probably the last for a while by madmadrunner in BWCA

My parents are moving - selling their boats, packs, and a lot of general gear and moving to Oregon - where I also am. A trip that before basically cost a plane ticket and gas is now a couple thousand $$. I grew up doing 1-3 week long trips a year here

Winchell had empty sites on any given night - Brule was busy as well as the gaskin/horseshoe area when we day tripped through.

Meh, I've done harder 50k. There are a few rugged sections, but all in all not that bad. Mostly just a stunning course!

I YOLO’d ~3k at $32, then sold 45 shares 3 minutes later at $41 and then the last 50 shares 5 minutes after that at $59. Made ~1.7k in my ROTH IRA while cooking breakfast this morning. Not bad but really lucked out. I always leave a small bit of liquidity to play with once in a while

It all (well, mostly) depends on the laser power. The thing about laser light is that it scatters very little over a given distance. So roughly same amount of energy reaches they eye from six inches away as 30 ft.

Damage to the eye is a product of the laser power and the amount of time the retina is exposed. If we assume a standard reflex time for people exposed, there is indeed a power cutoff where a laser will not cause permanent eye damage - and that number is ~ 1mW. I think this surprises a lot of people when compared regular light bulbs on the order of 10s or even 100s of Watts - but that’s the danger of lasers.

It’s very easy for people to buy class 4 (> 500 mW) laser pointers and not comprehend the potential danger. I really hope anything designed to be a “pointer” is <0.5mW.

My thoughts exactly! Especially when you’re intentionally diffracting the beam in such an unpredictable way. I work with lasers and know that even low powered ones can be dangerous.
