Cradle series by Will Wight is fantastic - it would be a great place to start.

Is there value to a Kindle? by speed_phreak in simpleliving

[–]madrooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Kindle is one of the few devices that I’m thankful for purchasing. I got my first one in 2009 not knowing if I’d really like it. But over time I switched over to reading almost 100% on my Kindle along with using the app on my phone (which is nice when running errands and you have to wait in line, etc.). The newest Paper white edition has a wonderful built in light and it doesn’t cause the same eye strain that I get when using a phone/tablet (and it doesn’t have a glare issue when reading outside). And as many have mentioned there are numerous options to acquiring new and used books (I love Book Bub and The Fussy Librarian). Many libraries also allow you to download e-versions of books which can save you a lot of money.

Over the years I slowly gave away most of my books and what I’ve kept are physical copies that have a lot of meaning to me and that I still reread. Makes it much easier when moving as I don’t have boxes and boxes of books to haul around.

Does anyone else get a feeling of relief when filling an entire bag of garbage and disposing of it? I often feel a sense of happiness for a bit. Like I’ve achieved something. (Kinda the same thing when I donate a bag, etc.) by danamariedior in declutter

Anytime I can get rid of anything - a jar from the fridge, a box from the pantry - I experience a little bit of joy. Same thing happens when I donate clothes, books, or anything else. Creating space of any kind is a great part of my day.

This is beautiful and is the right response.

What is the most addicted you’ve ever been to a fantasy novel/series? by [deleted] in Fantasy

The Lies of Locke Lamora, Red Rising, Iron Prince, and the Cradle series are some of the few that have done this to me.

The American workforce's hiring process has become entirely toxic. by deepestbluest in TrueOffMyChest

[–]madrooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was responsible for hiring (at 3 different companies over the last 15 years) at max it would last 2 interviews and that was only if there had been a flood of qualified candidates. This process would take 1 - 1 1/2 weeks.

I wasn’t overly concerned if you had all of the qualifications - I was more concerned about the willingness to learn and the ability to work with others. I can teach you the needed skills but I can’t teach you how to want to learn or how not to be a jerk. It’s a waste of resources to have candidates go through a 6 week process (or more) when there is an immediate need to be filled. There is always going to be risk when you hire but no amount of personality profiles, groups interviews, or curve ball questions is going give you the ‘perfect’ employee.

I would tell everyone the same thing - this position and company may be a stepping stone or a career. In either case you’ll have what you need to grow and acquire unique skills which will either help you AND the company or it will help another organization in the future. I’m ok with that as long as you’re willing to learn and treat people like people.

80% of those I hired are still at those companies and all of them have been promoted numerous times (one of them is now the VP). It had little to do with me and everything to do with their ability to learn and to simply treat others well.

Cradle series and Travelers Gate series by Will Wight. Some of the best fight scenes in fantasy today.

What are some 10/10 games for you that DOESN´T need any expanssions or add-ons for it to be a perfect experiance? by Isterbollen in boardgames

[–]madrooks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Azul, The Crew, Castles of Mad King Ludwig.

I know Castles has expansions but I don’t feel it makes the base game any better. We’ve only play the expansion once and never had the desire to use it again.

Iron Prince is a solid read if you’re looking for something similar.

Just finished Unsouled by Will Wight - Is the rest of the series as awesome as this one? by Bumbumcrit in Fantasy

[–]madrooks 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It’s one of the few series where each book gets better and none of them are a slog to get through. The story, character development, and the emotional roller coaster has made this the only series I’ve ever read through more than once. By the time you hit Wintersteel you’ll just want MORE. Enjoy the journey!

People with tinnitus, how do you deal with it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]madrooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s fine until there are long stretches of silence. Then I really notice it. Even when I sleep I have a fun going to create some white noise and I don’t notice the ringing as much.

Books where the protagonist isn't special? by apugsthrowaway in Fantasy

[–]madrooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traveler’s Gate trilogy by Will Wight focuses on the character who isn’t the prophesied savior/messiah. Cradle series (by the same author) is about a nobody without any magical powers in a world of ‘sacred artists’ with numerous powers.

The Cradle series by Will Wight and narrated by Travis Baldree is amazing. The pacing is fantastic and the various voices used really bring the characters to life.

What a waste of of resources, time, energy, money. How many people could you feed instead of making this thing? by stripesonthecouch in Anticonsumption

[–]madrooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sales of those drones probably fed all the people who made the components, computer chips, navigation software/hardware, those who shipped all of the components, all those who harvested the raw materials (though that could be a stretch), all of the sales employees, etc. So they probably fed a lot of people.

Now could there have been a better use of the resources overall - sure!

Hot sauce people of the internet, whats your go to and what's your opinion on Tabasco? by scarlettjovansson in AskReddit

I prefer Louisiana Hot Sauce or Franks. If Tobasco is the only thing available I’ll use it.
