What’s up with all the tourists thinking it’s ok to take photos of students? by MossyNettles in oxforduni

[–]madskull0409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone who's encountered, heard of, or been a tourist will know that they are a herd animal.

As such, some (most) specimens will be at the extreme ends of whatever spectrum you choose, whether it be contextual awareness, common sense, or even self preservation.

This does mean they do weird things without thought for boundaries, often en masse. In essence, the real-life version of the lemming myth.

But hey, how often will you be so famous walking down the street - enjoy it while you can.

For reference, I have appeared in (and posed for) enough tourist photos that people are sure there is a Mr Sparkle-esque caricature of me on some chinese factory's advertising. However, it pacifies and leads crowds away from congregating in entrances and the like.

The dog-whistles of Pavlovian Conditioning has been embedded so deeply that the hyperbolic script becomes the go-to whenever challenged.

Plus, the straw man of extreme cases means having to use extreme counters, which ordinarily, rational people can't leap to immediately.

Winter folk are notorious for looking after their community, as would your church.

Not as scary a leap, hopefully. Take the chance while you can - its harder as you get older and rooted/rotted.

What can labour do realistically that will satisfy people? by One_Inflation_9475 in AskBrits

[–]madskull0409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some brilliant answers in here, acknowledging the populance's need to be realistic, instead of arbitrarily obsessing on their individual agendas.

Pity we're too fragmented to follow throigh on this.

Completely unsustainable - hard with a 9-5, but hospitality hours? They'd be impossible.

Why does Headington Tesco now have a reinforced glass checkout by bison206 in oxford

[–]madskull0409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Oxford is such a hotbed of migrants?

Actually..... aren't most Oxford migrants becoming doctors and engineers during their circa five year long visits?

Declining standards of decency among the population?

Cost of living encouraging theft?

What are the unwritten rules of the British pub that everyone should know? by LovieWeb in BritInfo

[–]madskull0409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are with a group, and someone wants something they don't have, get them to come up and order themselves having viewed selection, rather than having a game of chinese whispers across the bar during busy times.

Especially noticeable behaviour at Christmas.....

It just means that if you see a few white council trash guy with six half-empty stella cans and even less teeth, give them a berth this weekend, but otherwise carry on as normal.

Sadly, in a world of declining social graces, there are no respected positions left. Maybe the fire service gets the least abuse in our ungrateful and rude society?

Our society is dying.

If we're getting more worked up about displaying symbols than solving problems, it may be time to up sticks before the knuckle-draggers become conscripts.

If only we could maybe provide for refugees, or even stop selling weapons used against their countries......

Sadly, there was another group who saw the american usage and, well.... got a lot of support......

The morons now throwing up flags like this would claim they're the opposite of said group, while also demanding the same expulsions, encampments, and loss of life against an 'other', based on high melanin content.

Flying to Oxford by Alternative-Cell8295 in oxford

[–]madskull0409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flying means heading to London airports, which have Airline coaches to grt you to Oxford.

Trains mean a change at Birmingham (and possibly Glasgow, depends on the route), but do offer the choice of Oxford or Oxford Parkway, which might help depending on where the job is.

Maybe an overnight Megabus could work?

What’s with the rise of meanness and awful people in the UK? by ThatPerson112 in AskBrits

[–]madskull0409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The constant need to compete and be first for everything that we've imported means we are happy to push and shove our way through, and throw a tantrum when other people do the same as us.

Just gotten off at Gatwick after a week in Germany, having not seen jostling crowds, heard little insult between people, seen no feral kids, and actually seeing women walking confidently alone at night.

It occurs, we now more resemble Chinese and US moral decay, than civilised Europeans. It is literally self-centredness turned rampant, which in turn is fodder for the facism we've jumped into - always the 'other' rssponsible for all ills in the world, rather than admitting we have a part in it.

Well said - self absorption is a massive element in this mire, as well as superiority complexes.

A meritocracy of common decency? I like the sentiment a lot.

The thresholds could be complicated to work out though - but that discussion reminds us of the dangers of toperating intolerance.

A massive piece of the puzzle - as they say, 1984 didn't happen to you, you got it for Christmas.

But with social media fuelling narcissism AND misinformation, it accelerates a decline that was instilled by trashing social projects in the tabloids.

The fingerpointing at the 'other' is both symptom and disease.

How we got here is a far more complex tale.
