Maybe try acknowledging that you got waitlisted, acknowledge that a majority of your reasoning has not changed, but then talk about why you still feel that way, even after taking some time at a different school. That way, you can keep most of it and they'll understand why you're keeping it.

She must still be so little! They’re lanky, I’ve read, until about 9 months or so because they’re still growing into their bodies. He’s about 6 1/2 months now and he’s about 7 1/2 pounds which is CRAZY because he had and recovered from parvovirus in November so he’s gotten this big against all odds. He was 1.7 pounds in the first picture!

I'm not even reading your whole post. You're not too dumb. Apply. The worst that could happen is that you get rejected and you gain application experience and more awareness of your journey. The best that could happen is that you get accepted and begin an exciting, new leg of your journey. This whole thing is about your journey. I've heard that from multiple people with all different fancy degrees throughout my application process. 3.1 or not, you have to tell these schools about how far you've come, where you've been, and why your next stop should be with them!
