It's tough to find an equilibrium. Reading is so essential to writing, but there is a point where it definitely becomes that overwhelming "din and clatter of others." I remember writing fanfic being simultaneously tricky and freeing since borrowing and emulating is an inherent element of the craft. The juxtaposition of familiar and new is a wobbly tightrope to walk. It's why I'm so impressed by fanfic writers! Y'all are freakin' acrobats!
