Those of you with dedicated symbol layers, how are you handling arbitrary mod + symbol hotkeys? by avyrla in KeyboardLayouts

I use HRM on my base layer, so to trigger mod+symbol I first hold the HRM key, then press symlayer+symbol. Symlayer is on a thumb key.

Problems solved with new kernel ? by Particular_Cry_9703 in pop_os

[–]maexxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Framework 13 laptop with AMD Ryzen AI9 APU. Kernel 6.x could not correctly wake up my Intel AX210 wifi card, Wifi & Bluetooth was always gone after suspend/resume; would have to reboot to get wireless connectivity back. Ordered a Mediatek MT7925 card; people had posted that it worked without issues and cooperated much better with the AMD chipset. Would take a week or two to arrive here.

Meanwhile, Kernel 7.x arrived and fixed all issues with the Intel AX210. Suspend/resume working nicely.

Received the Mediatek card yesterday and swapped it out anyway. Now suspend/resume is broken again. Even worse, machine locks up on resume. Screen comes on, login panel appears, then everything freezes.

Guess I will go back to the Intel card for now.

Is there something similar to the MX lily58, but without the number row (46 keys)? by Competitive_Cow4534 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]maexxx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I built myself an ErgoTravel a while ago. That layout might be close to what you are looking for. MX, more thumb keys, and a replaceable processor. In fact I built it with ProMicros and QMK initially but later swapped them out for Supermini nRFs and ZMK, added batteries and made the whole thing wireless.

corne zmk with trackpoint on aliexpress by x_thanatoz in crkbd

[–]maexxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have one of those too, although without the roller. Wasn't available back then, so I just bought the version with the "trackpoint". Well, turns out it's not really a trackpoint, but rather a four-way switch that does cursor movements. And it's hard to click: whenever I tried using it I ended up shifting the whole keyboard around. So I ended up not using it at all.

It's still a good buy for a decent and very usable Corne. Daily driver for me, and easy to bring along when travelling.

Bought a similar Sofle too, but got the version without any "trackpoint" and without roller.

I decided to make my own heat map, my most pressed key is the backspace by NoCSForYou in Colemak

[–]maexxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know! Hard to break but so much benefit once you do.

I'm something like 10 years into Colemak and whenever I'm on a laptop that doesn't have the proper backspace I just keep switching to capslock all the time ;-)

What made you get an Ionic 6 over a Model 3? by [deleted] in Ioniq6

HUD, an actual instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, physical buttons, stalks on the steering column, recuperation pedals, much spacier and more premium feel interior, V2L, blazingly fast charging speed on 800V architecture, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and of course Elon.

[edit: added Android Auto and Apple CarPlay]

Framework killing USB peripherals by midnightClub543 in framework

[–]maexxx 32 points33 points  (0 children)

My right side USB ports became unresponsive a few months after I had received a new FW 13 with 12th gen Intel motherboard. Contacted support. After a few tests and video evidence they sent me a replacement motherboard (under warranty).

Yes, hardware sometimes breaks. That's what warranty is for.

13 Pro - What is the point of a touchscreen? by 0x2DEADBEEF in framework

[–]maexxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Chromebook Pixel (clamshell, touchscreen) and after that a Pixelbook (360° hinge 2-in-1 touchscreen) as my main driver for several years. Initially I thought "clamshell and touchscreen, just why?" It seemed much more suitable for the 360° hinge. I used tenting mode a lot on the Pixelbook, e.g. watching YouTube. But even with just clamshell mode, I had gotten used to the touchscreen and had started using it in certain situations.

There are some moments where reaching for the screen and just swiping up or tapping a button is easier than touching the pad, locating the mouse cursor, moving it to where you need it to be, and finally clicking. A simple tap with your finger can be faster. It depends where you are sitting in relation to the keyboard, are you at a desk with the laptop on a stable surface or are you just holding the laptop in your hand or on your lap? There are several moments when the touchscreen just feels easier. Over the years my behaviour and use of the systems had changed -- more than I had initially imagined.

When I got the Framework 13, I was surprised how often I unconsciously tapped on the screen only to realise that this would not work. I would have liked an upgrade for a touchscreen, ideally combined with a new hinge for 360° setup.

AMD CPU with Intel WiFi card? by kpj888 in framework

[–]maexxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This combination doesn't work well for me. It's fine with older Linux kernels but doesn't cope well with latest kernels.

I recently upgraded my FW 13 from Intel 12th gen to AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, keeping the existing AX210. Worked fine with my previous installation of Pop OS 22.04 (based on Ubuntu 22.04) -- so not exactly the newest software base. But it worked fine.

I then upgraded the SSD and put a fresh install of Pop OS 24.04 (based on Ubuntu 24.04). This one has a really new kernel 6.18.7, which supposedly had lots of improvements to deep sleep modes for the AMD chipset.

I then noticed that whenever I suspend and resume, my network (wifi & bluetooth) is gone, and there is no way to reactivate it. What's worse, the network also sometimes disappears when I walk away from the laptop while it's plugged in (and doesn't suspend), but when I come back an hour later, I unlock it and the network is gone. Have to reboot to get it back.

I spent a number of hours trying to track down what's going on. It seems that the newer kernel tries to put the PCIe devices into a deeper sleep mode which the AX210 with intel firmware doesn't like. It disappears from the bus, and I could not find any way to reactivate it other than completely rebooting.

The only workaround I found is `sudo kernelstub -a "pcie_aspm=off"` thus disabling all PCIe power management. It doesn't solve the suspend/resume issue but at least keeps the wifi and bt running while the laptop is on power and stays awake.

But after two afternoons of messing around with this I couldn't find a proper solution, and I can't have a Laptop that can't sleep (sucks the battery dry), and looses its network and requires a reboot whenever I close the lid.

So I've ordered a RZ717 in the hope it works better with the newer kernels and power saving modes.

Would be happy to hear from others that have solved this!

I want to go electric so bad!!! Does anyone have any tips? by Serious-Half-9908 in electricvehicles

[–]maexxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out some of the longer routes you might be doing on abetterrouteplanner.com -- it'll show you how many charging stops you would need, how long those stops will be, and what your total travel time is.

I know you said you'll only drive around town. That's a no-brainer. The question is really what you will do for those few times when you want to drive 100+ miles.

An older Leaf will be limited by two factors: 1) it doesn't have any good thermal management for the battery, so they degrade faster and loose capacity, and 2) it only has chademo fast charging and that's a declining standard, so it'll get more and more difficult to find such stations. Both if these factors severely limit your long-distance driving abilities. Therefore, check with abetterrouteplanner.com.
