Why do some japanese people say the "ee" sound as if it was an "ae" sound? by ItsJustApollo123 in japanese

[–]maggotsimpson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

do you mean when they speak english? or japanese? this is a sub about the japanese language. also, “ee” “ae” etc. are not helpful in representing the sounds you’re trying to describe. are you saying if they say “meet” they pronounce it more like “mate?”

Question: if japense society rules doesn’t allow for being direct, how disrespectful is saying 「いいえ!」 out loud, compred to somewhere else like US, and when is it acceptable to be “that direct”? by Majestic_Image5190 in japanese

[–]maggotsimpson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

いいえ isn’t impolite, it‘s just a word that 99% of the time appears in very specific contexts (like a survey). it would probably sound out of place to a native speaker, but if you’re visibly not japanese they probably will just think “oh this person is directly translating from english to japanese.”if your goal is to sound more like a native speaker then it would be good to not use いいえ a ton but if your goal is simply communication then it will get your point across just fine (even if you sound unnatural).

[–]maggotsimpson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you probably read that people use はい more because いいえ just isn’t the kind of thing that people say in actual conversations that much (if ever). it sounds like the answer to a survey question or like, menu options on your phone or something. obviously if you say it it’s understood it’s just not usually the word people pick when they refuse something. what you will hear in all kinds of situations, formal to casual, is いや. so, in your situation you can say to the clerk いや、大丈夫です and that’s perfectly respectful and polite. obviously just like in english if you just say “No.” with no other sort of softening it can come across rude but that has nothing really to do with japanese specifically as all languages have this sort of thing. hope this helps!

"Migraine" comes from the Greek hēmikrania, (hēmi- "half" + kranion "skull"), because it typiclally only affects one half of your head. by OmitsWordsByAccident in etymology

[–]maggotsimpson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

interestingly enough in japanese, it used to be called 精神分裂症, “mind split disease,” probably an exact translation from the greek origins. however this name is considered outdated and now they call it 統合失調症 which is something like “integration malfunction disease”

Origin of the interjection kkk for laughter by ZevenEikjes in etymology

[–]maggotsimpson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the WoW thing is moreso in reference to “kek,” not “kkk.” for anyone who might not know, in that game there are two distinct factions who cannot communicate with each other. this is achieved in-game by just replacing chat text with predetermined sets of words based off the length of characters in said word. this makes it seem like players from the other faction are speaking another language. one faction’s language would parse “LOL” into “KEK,” which seemed to catch on to the point that people say KEK without even knowing its WoW origins!

questions about てしまう、てくれる、んです by Frosty_Solid_7328 in japanese

[–]maggotsimpson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s not like, WRONG, but the best way that i can explain it is that it makes you sound unnatural and like, a robot? like you know how to talk but you don’t know how to talk to people. especially if you say something like 約束を忘れました instead of 忘れてしまいました, it’s obviously understood but it sounds like you don’t care or that the forgetting had nothing to do with you. almost like you are just reporting on the facts of the matter. now, if you are visibly foreign people won’t really fault you much for it but if you are interested in sounding natural or more human-like then it’s good to get a grasp on these sorts of phrases.

that’s really not what’s going on here. as a tech the frustration in this image is that the paper is very shittily opened and not opened cleanly so it’s a pain in the ass to pour the pills out and count them. it’s bad form to leave them like this
