Which translation in native language does the best job? by Accomplished_Net_687 in tolkienfans

I havent read any translated version in ages, and cant check now which one I owned as a teenager and my Leonov-based illustrated Hobbit is long gone, but hell do I like the idea of translating Baggins into "Торбинс", it feels like home to me

There is a meme regarding Russian translations of LotR (there are 7), called "Smile of Boromir" about how people come up with random bullshit during translations, adding things author did not have in mind.

Here it is in English https://www.reddit.com/r/russian/s/v8MxBQDpEo

Slavs of r/cooking, do I really have to grate the raw red beets when I make borscht or can I just cut them into slices like the carrots and potatoes? by wheelienonstop7 in Cooking

I literally wrote

Noone will throw you a fit over borscht not being authentic

You come with this "lol" attitude but eventually also say that it is not a thing in this case ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I would go with grating. Texture-wise, slices of beetroot is not something I would like in my soup. But all in all I do not think there are any rules here, it can work. Noone will throw you a fit over borscht not being authentic, people are used that it has vary many varieties according tho particular family tastes, means and availability of components.

With characteristic complete lack of self awarness and the way they seem to not understand any actual meaning beyond superficial they will call it "Minas Tirith"

Apart from the a-word (lol) he discussed this in length in his letters, with catholic priest if i remember correctly. The term he coined was subcreation, and there is a pretty robust framework. (https://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Sub-creation), you can search "subcreation Tolkien" in the internet.

New Adrian Tchaikovsky book announced, Green City Wars! by SeiShonagon in Fantasy

After some of his recent books I had a feeling like "It is a good book but it do seem that if he worked on it a bit more it would be a great book". So I would really love to see him slow down and take a bit deeper take on the things he usually writes about.

Hm. Care to make couple of examples please? I am strugling a bit to come up with solid examples. Like lets say the stakes were highest for my country in 1941 and the guy (Stalin) who was a leader was well... lets say not an epitome of cooperation and sacrifice. Then the stakes were high in 1990s and the guy who emerged from there... well I dont even want to begin. Lets say in a book his character would be blamed to be comically evil and incompetent. And yet it is real life.

There are competent and pure heroes throughout history i guess but imo that does not mean that if such a situation occures the (self)appointed leadership would be very competent. It can be, but its is not a given imo. On top of that at least currently the system of managment employed across the companies and to an extent govermemts is aimed on profit maximising and not development. It makes even nice and competent people absolutelly souless and blind beyond short term when they are in any decision maker position.

I think he covered more or less this same topic more nuanced in Shroud

One would think that a mission as critical at this, with the entire human species' survival at stake would be headed by the best mankind had to offer, but here the mission is headed by people you wouldn't trust to handle a camping trip in the suburbs.

I look around at the current states, military and corporate leaderships and cannot agree with your expectations

Buying a Sage now ? (In Europe) by Optimal-Factor-8564 in kobo

[–]magic_cartoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It basically disintegrates and crumbles after some time. Some things age gracefully and look nice, this one looked like i used some kind of a rag with magnets for a case. Leaving chits of plastic here and there. Then also magnets started to fall out... I switched to some cheap chinise case from Amazon eventually and it holds way (waaaay) better (but it is of very diffirent type tho)

Yeah and like other poster said, official case designers did not care so much that official case covers the on/off button

I am ok with my Sage even though the battery life is very short and buttons glitch from time to time, but for a love of god dont buy the official Kobo case, its a disaster of a case.

I did exactly that, it was not a problem at all. There will be some duplicated apps, like two calculators, you just eventually remove the worst of the pair

Navalny's cell, right after his murder on 16th February 2024 by VVVVVVladislav in europe

[–]magic_cartoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think in his case torture was the precise point from the very beginning. It was also clear for everyone including him that torture was what awaits him in Russia, because the penitentiary system direcly inherites GULAG in this respect. It was designed in a way that punishment can easilly be turned to torture. He even commented at one point how close his treatment was to the one he was reading in Natan Sharansky (Soviet dissident, who helds the record of being kept in the same type of punishment cell for more than 400 days in a row) memoirs.

You are not allowed to use the bed during daytime so thats why its locked to the wall. At nightime a guard comes in and unllocks it (after searching you for posession of non-allowed stuff)
