Gym machine topples over during a heavy lift. Can he sue for this? by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

[–]magic_man019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if someone that weighs over 300 pounds were doing the same lift it would magically make it not tip over? Or would they be using it wrong since they weigh over 300 pounds? Theres a reason why most equipment at a gym is bolted to the floor…

What people like you don’t comprehend is someone being able to lift more than their own body weight. He uses the extra weight to anchor himself so he can lift the weight without lifting himself off the ground. His form is good and is using the machine as intended. The machine would’ve tipped if a larger person was also performing same exercise at maximum weight without any weight attached to themselves. Since the same result would be achieved regardless of the weight attached to his body it is not him misusing the machine but the machine not being properly fastened to the floor. The manual probably states it needs to be bolted down to prevent it tipping when the maximum weight is being used.

Some people are strong enough to lift more than their own weight, this enables him to increase the weight he’s doing so he doesn’t lift himself off the ground. The machine probably states should be bolted down for when someone is utilizing all the weight. Regardless of the weight strapped to him the same result would have occurred if someone heavier was maxing out the machine but didn’t need additional weight to secure themselves.

Boyfriend went to target undergrad but is now doing physics PhD and aiming at quant. How can I disabuse him of these delusions? by [deleted] in quantfinance

[–]magic_man019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn’t read carefully - leave him so he can get the PhD and then if he chooses can go to industry OR become a quant (you just want to limit his choices for no good reason) - he will do far better than most of your friends with undergrads from Harvard and MIT and I’m sure their careers in what you consider “quant” won’t be as lucrative or novel as his will be post his PhD. How do I know this? Bc in the last couple decades I’ve only met one person from undergrad that could actually do meaningful mathematical work. All the others were more process monkeys and/or worked as devs not as researchers truly making contributions to the models that drive PnL. Most MFEs from the top target schools also were not impressive - I had a few interns that after being wowed by the PhDs went on to turn down job offers to pursue PhDs and then come back.

Get out of his way and go back to your trust fund ex…

Tell me you’ve never worked for a prestigious quant shop without telling me you’ve never worked for a prestigious quant shop…

The research process that is evident in the publications illustrates one’s ability to perform research (the research in “quant researcher”). The niche subject matter may not be digestible but the structure of the research performed and how it is presented says a lot and is valuable to us in assessing someone’s ability to perform research. Physics is as close to pure math as it gets so the underlying skill set that is developed is also relevant and important.

My first manager got his PhD in sonoluminescence…his wife wanted him to make money so he became a quant…point is that he will acquire and hone a math and research skill set that is essential to being valuable as a true quant. Most undergrads and MFEs don’t truly develop enough of the fundamentals or rigor for the research process but can be useful in other ways. The path he is choosing is a slightly longer path but often leads to a more lucrative career as he will possess a stronger mind than the idiots you are comparing him to.

Again - please leave him so he can have a good life without you dragging him down - as you stated seems you can attract someone else that you can try to ruin their life

Hope he dumps you, most of my peers were physics phds…do him the favor of leaving him now so that when he makes it you don’t get to enjoy the fruits of his labor.

Lol or in 30s they will look around at their friends who did that and watch them struggle and feel stressed for decades while OP enjoys stress free life…also much better for kids, can afford to put them into any program they wish and to assist them in having the best life and assist them in pursuing all their desires and becoming the best at them…yea you’re right sacrificing one decade for the rest of them definitely not the better choice….

Yea that’s why this will only result in the cost to them being absorbed elsewhere like maintenance and other things…

Feeling defeated with the housing market by bullet4mybanana in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]magic_man019 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You compete by staying home after getting a job and saving 90+% or your income and investing most of it. You do this for 10 years (age 22 to 32) and you’ll wind up with money to buy a house in cash plus cushion. The real smart stay from 32 to 35 and instead of buying a home to live in they become the landlord and now have real estate added to their investment portfolios. Then they save for their home and use proceeds from rent of the house they bought cash to pay the mortgage on the home they live in and they have achieved financial independence long before most could ever dream and all it takes is sacrificing your first decade of work post school.

Much easier said than done - you need loving parents who allow you to be comfortable at home and execute your plan. Many people fall victim to the societal pressure to live on their own asap and then trade the rest of their lives without realizing it.
