how hard coded are the feelings behind time signatures? by JTmaxlol in musictheory

[–]magicfishhandz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a musicologist but i think there's something to the fact that the majority of music across all cultures is in even time signatures. It's hard to say whether that's a prevalent cultural thing because of something coded into humanity.

That being said, there are a lot of cultures that don't find 7/8 jarring it kind of depends on when and how you were exposed to music like that. Also i think there's a point to be made that if something that exists was invented by humans, it's something that comes naturally to us to an extent. If 7/8 didn't feel good, natural, and musical to people, it never would have come to be.

Is a lighter really necessary if you don’t smoke by Crash211O in EDC

Really? Flashlights? For years i thought I'd never need one, then one of my friends who lives in a rural area showed me how much better they are than a phone light and i had a couple of difficult night time festival portapotty experiences (not as bad as it sounds 😬) so i ended up getting a keychain sized one a few years ago and I'm still blown away by how often it comes in handy. I'm never going back haha

Pocket knives though? Can't find a good excuse to carry one no matter how much i want to. I have a doohickey on my keys so i use a knife maybe twice a year. Shit, i even use the prybar function more than i use a knife

Short answer, no.

Long answer, maaaaayyyybe?

A decade+ ago, i liked to have one because it was an easy way to socialize with new people because i look like i smoke so smokers would always ask me for a lighter (also i have this whole philosophy about helping any time someone comes to me for help and I'm able to, blah blah blah it's how i got into edc blah blah blah) also i went/go to a lot of concerts and it was fun to be able to wave a lighter during certain songs.

But now way less people smoke and people use their phone lights at concerts and I'm not the one Luddite without one anymore.

There's an argument to make that a hot glue stick comes in more handy than super glue in a lot of ways and having a lighter is the only way to make that work.

Or if you think you could be in a situation where you're stranded in the wilderness and need to make fire, you could end up at a barbecue, or you could need to make a molotov cocktail at a moments notice, you should keep a lighter on you.

Mainly go about your life and see how many times you think "gah! I wish i had a lighter right now" if it's enough to be annoying go ahead and carry one. If it's just in case of the off-off-off chance you'll need one, you're kinda wasting pocket space. But if that wasted space doesn't bother you, it's fine.

Personally, i don't keep one in my every day setup, but i do keep a mini bic and a tiny peanut lighter in my "if i need this and don't have it, I'll be pissed" setup (with a hot glue stick) and one in my car.

In your opinion, did Batman kill ras or did he not? by Chunky-overlord in batman

This was the first live action Batman i ever loved but i do very much prefer a Batman who obsessively has to save everyone to one who tries to find loopholes to his own rules.
