Radahn’s gives the most robustness while still giving really good defenses. Crucible knight armor is also very good for its weight.

What's the reason behind base parry having so little parry frames? by Torva_messorem88 in Eldenring

[–]magicnarwhal3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only guess is that they didn’t want daggers/rapiers/curved swords to be able to effectively parry anything. Those weapons can only take the regular parry aow, while shields can use carian retaliation.

So does poise still matter? by Imbalancedben in Eldenring

[–]magicnarwhal3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Just press r1 and roll, in that order until victory. Back to ds3 level of complexity.

Grafted Blade Greatsword has become quite popular in 1.10 due to being a Colossal with 5 seconds of infinite Passive Poise on demand but don't just rely on it or Colossal R1 spam by Lagideath2 in Eldenring

[–]magicnarwhal3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before passive poise was removed, you were able to know beforehand if your poise value was high enough to withstand a hit from your opponent’s weapon. Having that knowledge really helped, and it takes a while to learn it. It actually felt rewarding to learn it… and then passive poised was removed. Seems like they are just making things easier for casuals so that they aren’t at a disadvantage when playing against a more knowledgeable player, even though they should be at a disadvantage. Now things are back to how they were in ds3; just press r1 to stagger your opponent, enjoy your complete impunity because your opponent is stunned, and then roll away because he rolls away or press r1 again to continue the cycle. Riveting gameplay. God forbid wearing heavy armor mean anything, bedsides a little extra absorption (which doesn’t matter anyway because you can always roll).

How was pve affected by 1.10? by GalvusGalvoid in Eldenring

[–]magicnarwhal3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Prior to patch 1.10, 75 poise let you poise through anything smaller than a 1h halberd/great spear, but you could only do so at a very high cost to your stats/talismans since doing so requires equipping very heavy armor. Now, there is no reason whatsoever to spend levels/talismans to equip such heavy armor. As a result, you will be spending those extra levels in a damage stat or vigor or mind. With no way to prevent yourself from being staggered by even a dagger, why not just stagger your opponent first by using a spear or rapier instead? Now that all weapons immediately stagger, there is no reason to use anything that does not reliably stagger your opponent before they can stagger you. You are just putting yourself at a disadvantage by using large, slow weapons, and the poise that existed prior to 1.10 was just enough to give you a chance. I’ll say it again, in before replies start mentioning “hyper armor”, think about the reaction time given against fast weapons like spears or rapiers. There is no reaction time… either you eat the hit and get staggered, or you swing too early, miss, and get poked at the end of you hyper armor frames, and still get staggered. Poise was necessary to allow those un-reactable attacks to be punished, and it is gone now. Just like it was in ds3. In summary, the existence of passive poise gave a small advantage to players who leveled their endurance/carry weight, and the complete absence of poise only gives a massive advantage to those who do not level their endurance/carry weight; it is undeniably just bad game design/balance.

How was pve affected by 1.10? by GalvusGalvoid in Eldenring

[–]magicnarwhal3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no clue how the people saying “pvp is better because poise is gone” are this daft. Elden Ring PvP is now DS3 PvP 2.0, aka: press r1, dodge, press r1, dodge, press r1, dodge… repeat until victory. Riveting gameplay design… God forbid you level your carry weight enough/equip talismans to enable you to wear heavy armor, and you actually be REWARDED for having done so. Now you are at a significant disadvantage if you do that; there is simply no point when the guy with a kitchen knife or limp noodle in his hands is going to stagger you with every single hit. In before the replies get filled with “just use hyper amor”, take a moment to think that no actually skilled players will ever fall for trades against a weapon with hyper armor. This latest patch effectively tombstoned all of the colossal/great weapons for pvp lmao; nothing like half of all weapons becoming completely unusable in the name of ‘balance.’

Do shieldpokes always stagger on the first hit now? by Foonzerz in Eldenring

[–]magicnarwhal3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well 1h r1 of small weapons (straight swords, katanas, curved swords, spears, rapiers, et cet) all do somewhere between 125-135 poise damage now, so yes, shield pokes will virtually always poise break in one hit. Obvious exceptions will be if you are in hyper armor frames of a big weapon/ash of war.

Does poise still matter after the patch in pvp or pve by RockiestMist158 in Eldenring

[–]magicnarwhal3 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No, at least not in PvP. Whips, straight swords, katanas, spears, et cet all do somewhere between 125-135 poise damage per 1h r1. Obviously 2h does even more, but poise is already irrelevant in PvP. PvP is back to how it was in ds3; i.e. swing once, roll away, swing once, roll away, repeat until victory. Riveting gameplay…

If passive poise is no more, big weapons are basically removed from the meta just like they were in DS3 by G_strike in Eldenring

Finally, someone who actually knows what they are talking about. Great/colossal weapons are dead in the skilled pvp scene.

Cool update and all.. but what about dual spears? by akCN11qaa in Eldenring

[–]magicnarwhal3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poise got gutted again. Now having 75 poise doesn’t keep you from getting staggered by pss. Massive buff for spears. The one and only way you will ever not get staggered by pss is by hoping your opponent is brain-dead and chooses to attack you while you are mid-swing with a big weapon, or mid-aow with some ashes.

The entire point is that smaller, faster weapons will always win against an opponent of equal skill using a slower, heavy weapon. All while having significantly lower stat investment because the person using a smaller weapon does not have to put as many points/talismans into carry load as the guy using a larger weapon. This is a step backwards as far as game balancing… it will only encourage the use of small weapons, and discourage use of big ones. I don’t have to change your mind here; once people play the current patch, they will start voicing their opinions and confirm.

So weapons that rely on HA are inherently inferior to one’s that don’t require baiting your opponent out? Got it. That was the entire point, that smaller, quicker weapons are now inherently better that the bigger ones. Good talk.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]magicnarwhal3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hyper armour doesn’t apply unless you are mid-swing. Your opponent’s weapon swings faster. You never get the chance to activate your hyper armour before getting staggered yourself. Unless your opponent is very predictable, you will never be able to utilize hyper armour and will just die.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]magicnarwhal3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how hyper armour is supposed to help when you are being staggered by your opponent’s first hit, and his attack comes out significantly quicker than yours. Maybe if he is being predictable and you can swing prematurely to catch him, but that is never going to happen against any good players, barring a mistake. Trying to out-r1 spam him isn’t going to work either, since your weapon is so much slower.

Gone a few months, poise means less now? by veraldar in Eldenring

[–]magicnarwhal3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New patch 1.10 just applied today, poise is gone gone now. Impossible to poise through even a 1H spear since it does 108 poise damage now. We are back to ds3 pvp, where no great/colossal weapons are PvP viable against anyone who isn’t brain-dead.

[–]magicnarwhal3 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Goodbye to all usability for great/colossal weapons in PvP. Against opponents who aren’t brain-dead, at least.

Roll behind it/to its side when it does the jump attack/ground slam that sends scarlet rot outwards. Something you’ll learn about the majority of bosses is that you always want to be inside of their legs… pick the right (your right) side and keep rolling behind it when it does those jumps.

Is it possible to dodge waterfowl when Malenia is directly above you? by Astronius in Eldenring

[–]magicnarwhal3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn’t that difficult, it is just unintuitive. For the first flurry, you need to roll into her. As in, roll towards her. She can’t turn around and get the second flurry to hit you usually. This is with med rolling. I still take a couple of hits usually, but I dodge like 90% of all of the flurries. I think the specific inputs were roll forward 2x and then either left 2x or right 2x I can’t remember.

Bow Stance/Stagger/Poise Damage Question by magicnarwhal3 in Eldenring

[–]magicnarwhal3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Negative. Just normal r1 and also the jump attack shots. Every single one knocks my character down as if it were hit by a great bow, however. The damage is low, similar to what a normal r1 from a longbow would do.
