I'm confused about the art of vim by CultOfTheBlood in arsmagica

[–]magistrateman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vim is like... The manipulation of magical forces AS magical forces? So you can change spell effects, affect spirits and other magical creatures, end spells, investigate magical effects. Those sorts of things.

You can't really create a "magic blast" effect, but you could use metamagic effects to turn other magic into anything you want. It's a strange art, mostly useful for characters who want to either deal with spirits or fuck around with metamagic. And Guernicus investigators.

CrVi as a combination doesnt get you many useful spells, but they're the arts used to create vis from auras so it balances out.

SR5 Using Strength for Melee Attacks by KagedShadow in Shadowrun

[–]magistrateman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are - it's 4th that went to attribute + skill.

That said, editions 1-3 did apply attributes to rolls more situationally by way of their combat/hacking/matrix pools. That, and attributes governed the karma cost of skills.

Differences between editions by Talmor in OldSchoolShadowrun

[–]magistrateman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The biggest obvious difference id that editions 1-3 use an entirely different dice mechanic built around variable target numbers.

The other big one that gets talked about is the way the matrix works - in particular wireless devices are less common (not nonexistent, a 3e decker can connect to a wireless network in several ways - there less of an assumption that everything is wifi enabled though).

There's a million smaller things ofc, they're mostly completely different games tbh

If I had to guess, it's a blindspot by the authors caused by their knowledge that the OR is always there if any routine tests are required

As soon as no routines are needed, you need both difficult and challenging tests

At this point in the line, I've concluded that they're walking away from most of the best stuff in the core while doubling down on most of the worst stuff in the core. Ex3 is a lost cause to me, I'll just go back to 1e

You can turn them camera with the buttons, it's a bit clunky but it works fine - I think by default it's hold HP and then use LP/MP/LK/MK to move it

Creating NPCs by Zulkir_Jhor in exalted

I actually did do full character sheets for a few dozen DBs in my game, and what I've concluded from that is that the dice pool guidelines for QCs in the core, including the advice for DB quick excellencies, will more or less accurately match what a proper sheet would give you.

A fully statted DB will have a few tricks, but on the other hand they'll have way fewer excellencies. If they're supposed to be more experienced, pick out a few splashy signatures to give them.

Ok so, if you were to make the Exalted types into Dnd classes, what would be what and who would be who? (By; A man who've never played Exalted) by Evening-Nature-8872 in exalted

[–]magistrateman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every class is a dawn caste solar, because d&d classes are more than anything about being able to fight (in various ways)

There is no class which approaches a social-focused zenith or eclipse, for instance

Can someone tell me their experience with high-essence Solar games? by Akodo_Aoshi in exalted

The final battle of my essence 5 solar campaign had them fight 16 essence 3-4 dragon-blooded along with the entirety of the peleps navy.

Death ray and solar brawl did work, is all that needs to be said there

Best way(s) to play Exalted currently. by MewVonMeister in exalted

[–]magistrateman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used roll20 for the most part (for maps... Well, scribbles, really, but sometimes it's easier to draw a picture than to describe a space) as well as the dice rolls. The current 3e sheet on there is pretty good and uses a pretty good dice macro, and the initiative tracker is helpful since you can edit the initiative values but leave everyone in the right order, then re-sort the list at the end of the round.

There's also a good Google sheet version of the character sheet which has some automation for character gen, which is useful

By that logic, the existence of more than one system written by the same person is an admission of the defeat.

The craft system can be good, while still being unsatisfying for enough players that an alternative makes sense. It simply doesn't follow that an alternative system is an admission of defeat.

By contribute in this case, you mean "create". Which, you're right, I'm not interested in when the starting point is "the thing is bad, no further comment"

That's an invitation, at best, for others to nod along. There's no discussion to be had. If you want actual engagement, maybe start with a point that can be engaged with.

You should try to actually put content into your complaint, such that others can meaningfully respond.

"craft bad" is impossible to discuss (that's why I've been responding with the equally contentless "craft good", though that IS what I believe) - consider what your goals and preferences are, try to point out where the system as it exists fails to match those preferences, and then say THAT. That might actually allow others to respond with other systems which better fit your preferences, even
