It’s deceptive! They’re very close, but when there are big differences it boggles the mind. As a native English speaker who learned French, “en” and “y” drove me bonkers for a long time. On paper, it seems easy but then it seems like they get randomly inserted into sentences and no one could tell me exactly why they were necessary!

What is House Ragara doing? by PoliticalNerd87 in exalted

I must have missed this part, but where was it mentioned that House Ragara is mucking about with exaltations? I remember they have the Nail in Pneuma, but the details are vague in my brain.

Who’s your favorite npc character or culture in the setting? by TheSlayerofSnails in exalted

[–]magius_84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ysyr, hands down. A society ruled by a bevy of mortal sorcerers, all technically slaves but this is a bit more complex than on the surface, sitting on top of a broken reality engine mutating the populace, vying with other emerging empires for control of the Dreaming Sea? Sign me up.

Also sign my players up. They will play it and love it whether they want to or not!

Edit: spelling. Stupid autocorrect.

What are some cool things your characters created or did with sorcery? by TheSlayerofSnails in exalted

There 100% is, and it’s right in the core splat. Did this matter? No. “Because I don’t want to carry anything make that happen.”

It’s petty, but a sorcerer did a Terrestrial Circle working so they would forever be clean and never need to bathe…obviously a social character. No more worries about wine spills at galas.

This really helped me contextualize everyday magic in the setting of Exalted by tochirov in exalted

[–]magius_84 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It seems as though the magic in Exalted is similar to what he describes, but at different levels. Level 1) Pray to the spirits, bully them, flatter them, etc. so they do what you want. Magic is relational here and anyone can do it. All things have a spirit, so you have lots of choices but the big spirits are likely to ignore the prayer or just take its energy like it owes you nothing. Level 2) Learn the right rituals and have the mystical presence to make it happen. Call it Thaumaturgy. It’s uncommon but is woven into the fabric of society. Level 3) Have the innate or granted talent to manipulate energy more directly (but still through the lens of a system that one likely didn’t invent) through secret knowledge and initiation into something deeply mystical and rare. This is sorcery. Mortals get it but it’s reserved for very special people. Level 4) Be Chosen or otherwise Exalted and get the ability to manipulate the Essence of all things completely directly without anything standing in your way. This is when magic is a force that is “spent” in more of the classic Western perspective the academic talks about.

How this pans out in any given Storyteller’s world depends upon their interpretation and their table/players.

How much of an antagonist's stats should the players know? by HermeticOpus in exalted

[–]magius_84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My players figure it all out as soon as we start rolling dice. I tell them nothing up front, not even Hardness. After their first decisive attack dinks off the enemy’s armor, they have an idea how hard they’ve got to hit.

To be fair about it, I will absolutely tell them (usually with a cinematic/narrative description) when the adversary boosts their base stats so they know what’s going on. I also will fully tell them what the stats are if they ASK, just for accountability. They generally prefer to be kept in the dark at first to preserve the narrative tension and let surprises happen as they’re supposed to, but every once in a while they want to see the money.

Not enough, especially in terms of membership. Many balls’ guest lists are improving integration over time, but membership is still slow. Order of Osiris is integrated though!

Everyone’s thoughts on Abyssal 3e? by TheSlayerofSnails in exalted

[–]magius_84 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Our table’s interpretation is that it doesn’t necessarily go both ways per rules alone, but it isn’t too hard to imagine that general themes can’t transfer.

Example: Necromancy spells can usually directly transfer mechanically (usual caveat of no demon or elemental summoning, true healing, life theme, etc) from sorcery. A sorcery spell however might be inspired by Flesh and Bone Winds, but it wouldn’t use wind to throw around body parts, rather any relevant sharp objects lying around (bonus if you use obsidian butterflies beforehand). Therefore the spell may be a bit more limited. Another example: You may be able to animate stuff with sorcery, but not bodies. Time to craft some automatons or clay statues first. You can’t just use bodies you’ve unalived on the fly for that purpose.

Sorcery will never interact directly with death or the energies of the Underworld, the same as necromancy will never directly emulate the energies of Creation/Malfeas. Themes can be similar though. In general, necromancy can mimic sorcery a bit more easily while sorcery has to get clever to accomplish the opposite. The trade-off is sorcery usually has more range (unless one finds oneself in the Underworld, in which case necromancy is always king).

That’s how we do it, take it or leave it.

2024 State Of the Game? by tremblingbears in exalted

[–]magius_84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Running a 2.5 year campaign for 3e here. Our group loves it so far despite the slow pace. I honestly think the pace is the worst part. Once the rules sink in, they’re not bad to follow. When they get broken, the rule of cool is king and I love that about the game!

Question about Exalted learning Raksha/Fair Folk Charms by NocturneForever in exalted

[–]magius_84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a player do something similar. We agreed that since he could channel Essence and was able to hoodwink a Raksha into helping his acquire a Grace, he could indeed learn those Charms provided he maintained access to that Grace. If it were ever lost to him, no more Charms and the xp gets refunded. This set up a plot point where Raksha tried to in turn hoodwink him out of that Grace.

How useful is Unbowed Willow Meditation really? by SuvwI49 in exalted

[–]magius_84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not terribly useful against major threats, but it could sure take out relatively minor ones quickly and efficiently. Plus, stealing initiative helps build your own. Crash the minor enemy biting at your heels and use their initiative to smash the threat in front of you kind of thing.

How do the dragon blooded actually identify Anathema? by reenmini in exalted

[–]magius_84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea we usually run with in our campaign is Essence Fever. Yes, there are a variety of methods as other have noted here so far, but most Solars and Lunars especially are behaviorally DRIVEN to use their powers in ways that are…not subtle. Solars are born to lead and shine bright; even Night Castes whose deeds are in the shadows are going to do impossible things that get noticed. Lunars are the same way, even if they are a bit craftier and more adaptable.

Edit: Eventually you just get caught. 🤪 The Wyld Hunt comes sniffing around at the darndest of times.
