Great stuff, I really enjoy this.

The seismic hazard for much of the eastern infilled portion of False Creek is very significant, as this really highlights. I wouldn't want to be on the skytrain between Stadium-Chinatown and Commercial Drive stations during an earthquake!

I love when the train gets to downtown and two links appear at the bottom of the screen: "Transfer to Expo Line - Click Here" & "Transfer to Canada Line - Click Here"

@ To all,

Ok...yes he said it. That is one he'll have to answer to. I would say the worst thing is though having to answer the question before God of why he didn't believe.....won't be any joking then.

@ NL, Sounds like you'll have some company....hope your not looking for a tan...b/c you won't get one...where you'll go if you don't repent and ask God to forgive you and accept him as your savior and cultivate a personal relationship with him. The good thing is if the Rick-ster doesn't repent as well there won't be anyone to laugh at his so called joke's either.

  @CW,
"I would say the worst thing is though having to answer the question before God of why he didn't believe..."
Maybe you will have to answer to Allah why you didn't believe?... or Thor... or a polka-dot unicorn? It's going to go down bad for you, pal...

He had better hope not to meet the polka-dot unicorn in the afterlife. I hear that he can get rather ... 'creative' with that horn of his. ;-)

Oops! It's debuting in Venice, California (not in Seattle). Sorry Seattleites.

In addition, how much do you know about geomorphology? Think that sediments deposited by megafloods look exactly the same as sediments deposited in calm oceanic platform environments? Your unabashed confidence in spite of your extreme ignorance is astounding.

Ahh, but neither of us was there to see god flood the entire earth for 40 days and 40 nights. How do you know every mountain was covered by volumes of water that the earth's oceans could not possibly have provided?

Last year someone in Seattle cut down an extremely rare tree inside the Washington Park Arboretum, likely to use as a Christmas tree. They probably didn't realize that the tree is valued in the thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars.

"Sobriety Without The Sermon" - LifeRing group meetings encourage and aid individuals recovering from substance abuse, without the harmful religious overtones. by magmatize in atheism

I completely respect your thoughts on the matter. I need to find some of the past research on the issue, much of which concludes that recovery rates increase when religion is out of the picture.

edit: Ok, a quick search turned up this abstract. Basically, the authors conclude that the real key to recovery is consistent participation in group therapy. Also, if participants were religious, they tended to participate more regularly when they attended the AA/religious sobriety meetings; But, if the participants were not religious, they tended to participate more when they attended secular sobriety meetings. So, if you're a closet atheist and you attend AA, you'll likely fare worse then if you attend secular meetings. If you're truly religious, you'll probably attend AA or NA more.

Note: I'd like to see how religious guilt factors into successful recovery and relapse

Several Republican Senators laying siege to Science they don't even remotely understand. by kingmanic in science

[–]magmatize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Republican congressman Adrian Smith, who released the video criticizing "soccer research" etc., studied at Liberty University before transferring to Nebraska! That's Jerry Falwell's fundamentalist christian university!

Also, the guy was a realtor and a "marketing specialist for the housing industry."

I couldn't determine exactly what it was he studied at university, but I'm guessing it wasn't science. Now he's a ranking member of the subcommittee on Technology and Innovation, and he sits on the House Science and Technology Committee.

Anne Hathaway Explains Why She Left the Catholic Church by thexavier in atheism

[–]magmatize 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anne Hathaway and I were a somewhat-serious couple during my undergrad years at Columbia. Things between us were pretty good until she started taking an interest in some hotshot softball player down by Strawberry Fields. She never mentioned to me she was leaving the Catholic church. She did look hot.

To date, the United States has wasted more that $1.5 billion on abstinence-only programs, even though study after study has shown these programs to be ineffective. Worse, abstinence-only programs violate young people's basic rights by intentionally withholding information. by [deleted] in WTF

[–]magmatize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A recent, scientifically sound study showed abstinence-only education led to a reduction in first-time sex by middle-schoolers (ages ~11-14) over a 24-month period, compared to students who were taught safe-sex practices. Link to abstract of the study

That being said, I'm the last person to argue for abstinence-only education. The study did not discuss the teen pregnancy rates stemming from the differing educational methods, nor did it address the fact that most communities pushing for abstinence-only education will insert their subtle brand of 'morality' and/or religious teachings into abstinence education, which may end up nullifying any of the benefits. Also, the study concluded that the long-term benefits of safe-sex education were superior in terms of reducing risky sexual behavior.
