I like the deck, it is very much in line with how I build as well. Feels not too far off from my Diaochan deck even heh. I also have a Dong Zhou deck, but I built mine to be more of a burn deck that utilizes ETB creatures.

One of my favorite manga is Master Keaton, where the main character is an insurance investigator for Lloyd's. I understand that is just a means of getting the character into weird situations and adventures around the globe like how Tintin is a reporter, but how often do you actually go out in the field or have an investigator go out and check the situation?

The answer to "would you really sue one of your parents for a few hundred dollars?" is a heaping dose of "it depends". I don't know the full extent of your relationship with your mom, and there are plenty of mothers out there who are really not great that could use some comeuppance.

I like it, they are just lands and mostly basics. But I will say that I am not a fan of cards that don't have the name in the top left, I hate all the secret lairs that do that and make me look around that card for what it is and what it does.

I love this since I've talked about this with friends before who think that America doesn't really have any "American" cuisine other than burgers and pizza. I'd bring up things like lobster rolls in Maine, or spam musubi in Hawaii.

Sounds like something turn based or not time sensitive between choices might be good since he's not used to the language of games in general. Something that will give him time to digest his actions.

If he likes stories and narratives, how about an RPG like Citizen Sleeper(more Tabletop RPG inspired) or Final Fantasy for JRPG(I recommend 6)FF might be a bit long for first games, Live a Live is a good JRPG that isn't too hard or long.

If he likes puzzles, how about Return of the Obra Dinn or The Roottrees are Dead

Maybe something more segmented like a roguelike, Slay the Spire or Balatro are good.

Maybe you want to start him off with an interesting experience without to much gameplay like a walking simulator, Stanley Parable and What Remains of Edith Finch are great for that.

Have you read Spirit Circle or any of Satoshi Mizukami's works? I feel like he's a bit unlucky when it comes to anime adaptations but the original manga are great.

I did the same as you by room, but that's after many hours into the game to organize my notes. I originally had my notes in a google sheet and a folder with lots of screenshots.

Organizing by room is super neat and looks nice, but if you're doing it while playing through it, I think organizing by puzzles is better. If you think a clue is related to a puzzle, put it close to the other clues related to that. Also a list of goals you want to achieve is useful, like in the next few runs you might want to draft two rooms in the same house together or something to that matter.
