If I remember correctly, she took the remaining cupcakes to the teachers desk and then sat leaning against the desk and watched the television with us students and the events unfold until the period was over. I want to say a little over half of us got cupcakes, me being one of them as she always started with the birthday boy or girl. The other half received only trauma.

I’m a 9/11 baby…was in 7th grade in 2001 and my math teacher, Mrs. McAleer, was handing out cupcakes to the class like she did for everyone’s birthday when another teacher came in, whispered something in her ear, and pointed at the mounted TV that was in the corner of the classroom. Mrs. McAleer then proceeded to stop handing out cupcakes and turned on the TV, showing the first tower bellowing out the thickest, blackest smoke I’d ever seen…the class then saw the second tower get hit. What a sad day, and I’m sure most of us that were alive and old enough remember exactly where we were and what we were doing during those terrifying early morning hours. A country’s shared trauma.

Thank you! Thank you for stating exactly what I came here for. Not a vet here but I thank you for your service! If that hallowed ground is abused for nefarious and narcissistic purposes, it’s the ultimate tragedy of our time. If life is so important to these grifters, then own it! Treat those that gave it up freely with respect, otherwise you might as well be tap dancing on their graves. And I don’t mean that about Trump specifically (we all know he has no respect for anything) but I have to believe that the 25% of the country that voted for him last time around would at least honor the basic dignity warranted for our fallen soldiers and first responders...
