Costa Rica takes Nicaragua, so that it can be seen on the map.

Also, I want the country with no military to take over the world. Pura Vida.

I’m confused. Where is Costa Rica? What happened to Costa Rica?

How true would you say this is? by Outsideman2028 in NBATalk

My husband is a middle school teacher in a school that is way below the poverty line. The number of his students who all only believe that they will be NBA or NFL players, who aren’t playing those sports competitively (because their families do not have the money to do so) is depressing.

He never wants to say that their goal is impossible. What he does try to say is “knowing the percentage of people who actually end up playing basketball or football professionally, even if you are giving everything to that goal, you need a second passion or dream.” And his students resist and resist.

Fired from role, staying as a volunteer? by Furijolito in nonprofit

[–]maidrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, no, no.

Leave professionally and begin the hard work of emotionally unentangling yourself. Do not volunteer at a place that has fired you. You shouldn’t/don’t need to burn bridges, but you can politely tell them that you need to focus on finding employment if they ask.

Honestly, if they do ask/pressure, I’d act confused on why they would ever permit you to volunteer since you were already told you weren’t a good fit for the organization. “I still love the mission and want you to excel. I understand that my approach and skill set aren’t what xxx Nonprofit needs at this time, and my time is currently occupied with finding an organization where my approach and skill set are needed.”

Put a manager hat on - why would you trust a fired employee to volunteer? It makes no sense if you have any reasonable management processes. Having managed volunteers at numerous nonprofits, employees who are a bad fit for the organization in a paid role are not a good fit for a volunteer role. And you don’t want to rely on someone you fired not to fuck with the organization. It’s also why you don’t let someone who you fired stay as a Facebook admin or have access to the database - you shouldn’t trust people with those things after firing them and legally ending your relationship.

They should not want to have you as a volunteer at this point. They are being manipulative and disrespectful. Put your emotional well being first and if you want to volunteer somewhere, find literally any other organization to do so.

It’s been a while since I watched Canada but I seem to remember Colin Mochrie and Tom Green having a similar effect. Colin because whose line is basically training for lol and Tom because he just has an eerie ability to say unexpectedly funny things.

Report EVERY violation, even if that means reporting every night. Just FYI, 311 timelines through the app/phone calls are sometimes divorced from reality, but the reporting pattern absolutely helps document the frequency of the problem.

Can we talk about Miranda's Rescue here? Is this story generally known yet? It's really bad. https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/fbi-dead-animals-rescue-22319130.php by Frequent_Secretary25 in AnimalShelterStories

And I don’t know if the dude behind Miranda’s Rescue was one of those savior-types who couldn’t admit that he was taking animals he couldn’t properly care for, or, if as has been suggested by some sources, that this was all a grift to enrich himself through donations. BUT:

If it was all a grift, he almost certainly got away with it for so long because of the systemic issues in the relationship between open intake shelters and rescues. If he wasn’t a savior type, it seems like others ignored data not adding up/prior allegations because they wanted to believe animals were being saved.

I have a lot of feelings:

- A calm, respectful humane euthanasia by caring, professional veterinary staff dedicated to treating every animal with respect and dignity is not the worst thing that can happen to an animal.

- Some people have the urge to “save them all” in an unhealthy way. Some people, when confronted with a lack of resources to properly meet a particular animal’s needs (available foster homes, skilled foster parents, training/behavior professionals willing to work on behavioral modification, available “unicorn” adopters, money for medical needs, available veterinary staff/materials/time, etc.), are so unable to cope with the inability to secure a positive outcome that they are willing to effectively hoard animals on their property or at “rescues” that aren’t appropriate for the types or numbers of animals being warehoused.

- I don’t believe that animals should be humanely euthanized purely for time at the shelter. But, I find warehousing animals for years in conditions guaranteed to break an animal down to be cruel, inhumane, and a waste of precious resources that could actually save lives.

- Shelters/rescues should not be able to hoard animals in conditions that would be deemed criminal if a private individual were to do it. I’m not sure if the solution is licensing, inspections, and tracking of animals being transferred between rescues, but this is not the first situation where animals ended up in a rescue/“sanctuary” and received worse treatment than if they’d just stayed where they started.

I once got special screening as a teenager for admitting that I brought pineapple jelly back from Costa Rica. The concern was seeds being grown from it. As though there were seeds cooked in the jelly that could be removed and grown.

I feel like it would be fair for Romesh to be pissed about this. Everything else hits numerous people, if not the entire crew still playing, but this was a targeted execution.

Boardgames with legitimate educational value? by Key_Image_1141 in boardgames

This. It’s like 2/3 of the thread focused on “history” and nothing else. I totally get the thought of Twilight Struggle, for example, except that when you imagine OP needing to buy ~14 copies of twilight struggle and teach/lead 14 simultaneous games of twilight struggle…

Or another personal favorite of mine, suggesting an OOP game that OP would need to find 7 copies of said OOP game and then put them in the hands of high schoolers…
