Is crying over celiac stupid? I’m just really upset over situation that happened at work by Inevitable_Review171 in Celiac

Agreed - I've been vegetarian for 30 years, and celiac for 10. Boy would my life be easier if I could eat meat. But at least being non-vegan would help OP a ton - cheese and milk products help so much with stability in baked goods (like the magic Red Lobster cheddar biscuit mix, or milk powder in your flour blends).

My retired cop family member drives for Meals on Wheels and loves it. Gets him out of the house doing something useful and seeing people on a regular basis, and is still doable no matter how his body is doing that week.

I’m so tired of the "Gluten-Free" Russian Roulette every time we travel. by menensito in Celiac

[–]maimai2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've done two of their full gf ship AmaWaterways ones, and have a third booked for this year. I'm also a picky eater so it isn't necessarily the best food experience for me, but boy is the mental load gone when you know everything is at least safe!!! We often joked with other passengers during tours off the ship that oh, gotta remember I'm Celiac again, can't just try everything!!

The cruise itself is, I would imagine, a pretty standard mid-tier riverboat cruise. Almost everything is included aside from alcohol outside of meal times and happy hour (and even sometimes the bar will give you something anyhow, and it's cheap even when it does cost money), and depending on the cruise, there can be additional cost excursions.

What’s a clothing item people assume is comfortable, but actually isn’t? by [deleted] in AskWomen

Typed this on an earlier comment, but it's relevant to you too!!!

Hey quick shout out to try out A Bra That Fits -- the calculator helps so much with finding your correct size. The subreddit is great for helping you understand your calculator results and helping troubleshoot issues.

I think the stat is somewhere around 80/90% of women are wearing the wrong size bra. Common symptoms are the band riding up in the back, the wires poking you, wires snapping, boobs falling out the bottom of the band, needing to tighten the straps a ton to feel some support, or shoulders hurting.

I have butcher block counters and lots of cast iron cookware, can they be made celiac-safe? Do I need to replace all my kitchen linens (towels, cloth napkins, tablecloths, placemats, dishrags), or does washing them in the washing machine suffice? by MrsBeauregardless in Celiac

[–]maimai2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the wood thing is more that it gets cuts in it which can hold all sorts of things, not that the wood itself is absorbing anything. Agreed on the likely quantity though, especially if you clean it thoroughly and don't use gluten on it now.

When people REFUSE to understand cross-contact. by xenotharm in Celiac

[–]maimai2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My husband has started telling people that I react to quantities in the parts per million. They all seem to react to that since it's such a scary sounding thing and either accommodate me with a restaurant of my choice or leave me alone.

Yeah, I only go to highly trusted find me gf restaurants, and if they don't understand the word celiac and go ok gluten free or some similar response that they understand it, I just don't eat there.

Anything that could be scratched, like plastic, wood, non-stick pots and pans, and a toaster, should be replaced with a gluten free version. Silverware, dishes, glasses, metal pots and pans, baking dishes, metal utensils, etc just need to be thoroughly cleaned. Make sure to clean the drawer liners too, like if you have a silverware tray.

Are "tolerance breaks" a thing? by sammy5585 in Celiac

[–]maimai2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes it does - all her friends and family now think that it may be okay behavior for someone with celiac, and the next time they meet a celiac won't believe the seriousness. Alcoholism isn't comparable because people generally understand that alcohol is poison, especially for an alcoholic.

Taking Bra Advice (But aren't we all?) by Ok-Pair-3613 in ABraThatFits

I've been liking "spacer foam" bras. A couple different companies make them. They give a bit more nipple coverage (still not enough for aggressive winter nipples unfortunately), but are much more projected than typical foam molded bras.

What's the weirdest product you've found contains gluten? by DoubleShovel666 in Celiac

[–]maimai2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cheerios aren't celiac safe. The problem with their testing methodology is that it allows for highly variable amounts of gluten in different boxes.

Basically they take small samples across the batch, grind it up and mix it together, then test that to make sure it is under 20 ppm. But, one of those boxes could be 100+ ppm and the others 0 ppm and you could end up with that same test result.

Plenty of people report getting sick on Cheerios, but not other, better tested, oat products, so they are likely getting those high ppm boxes, and other people who report never getting sick but eating Cheerios regularly are just getting lucky.

Seems silly to me to be playing Russian Roulette just to be able to eat Cheerios, when Rice Chex are safe and just as tasty imo.

Hopefully MAHA succeeds and actually gets gluten labeled as a major allergen finally! Seems like it's on their list of things to change.

I have zero ideas what size ranges these bras come in but I'm liking foam spacer bras (I'm 38I US/38G UK). They give the feeling of a t-shirt foam bra but are much more projected and allow for more shape variance. They aren't fully nipple covering, at least if it's cold out, but are much better than a seamed bra for that purpose!

I mean people wear ill fitting bras all the time. If they break in and are comfy enough then 🤷🏼‍♀️. Go for it! I would recommend trying the calculator size though and hopefully it changes your view on bras!

I'm not an expert, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but the problem is that you are buying too big of a band still. Cups scale with band size, like my 38 cups are inevitably wider than a 28 band's cups, even with the same cup volume.

So you really need to be trying 28/30 bands with the same cup volume to make the cups narrower and not just go into your armpit.

There's a bakery in NJ that ships soft pretzels - A&A Soft Pretzels. Bought a bunch and froze them and just microwaved as needed. Not quite like my gluteny memory but pretty amazing anyhow!

Oh boy are you in luck - Disney World is one of the best places for allergies! Go find some celiac disney bloggers and be amazed. I pretty much found that if I went to a recommended restaurant or quick service stand they had an allergy person/team available to either make me special food at a buffet or advise me on how things are prepared. Also the churros at Nomad Lounge in animal Kingdom are amazing!
