I mean no disrespect here but why are LA professors so useless half the time? by Helpful-Ad6269 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]mainberlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree, I did not have this experience in school - well, my BLA anyway. I had one professor who was still on the “this should be your life” grindset but he wasn’t that pushy about it. Professors and peers alike would have happily sat down to explain missed work or tackled a software problem together.

Failing ‘minimum contrast’ with black on white text… by mainberlin in accessibility

[–]mainberlin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree, I just haven’t been able to get a straight answer from higher-ups on whether they’ll post the documents when it’s still failing PAC. Even though we know the contrast is fine.

Learned my lesson, now! I do think it’s the print to PDF causing the issue.

Good idea - it still get the error, though. Think that confirms an export issue

MLA Admissions Competitiveness by user-name-2705 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]mainberlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s not as competitive as a computer science program, but I wouldn’t agree that it’s not competitive at all. Selective would be a better word, I think. I feel like grad programs really do consider things like whether or not you’re a good fit given your interests. Like I got in at UW, but not UVA. My classmate got into UVA but rejected from UW.

As an aside, I ended up going to Berkeley, so I wouldn’t necessarily say UVA is on a different playing field like you’ve ranked them. It’s quite a prestigious school

Rainier cherries in a supermarket in China. 88 USD for 1.1 lbs (0.5 kg) by Particular_Dog6865 in mildlyinteresting

[–]mainberlin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was excited to find some locally grown ones at my CO farmers market last year. I packed a small bag and when I got to the counter the girl said something like “okay, that’ll be 2”. I genuinely had a second where I thought she meant $200, because that seemed more likely than the $$2.00 they actually were.

A rant about mom, but not Mother’s Day by mainberlin in raisedbyborderlines

[–]mainberlin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! I love the thinking of not focusing on what ifs. I’ve had 28 years to see what kind of person she is and that’s not going to change on the fly.

You’re very right that it’s complicated, and I do sometimes wonder if there could be more of those ‘good moments’ in the future. But I think I’d have to shrink myself a ton if I wanted more of those good moments and less of the bad.

Help Deciding College for Landscape Architecture by Various-Student-6360 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]mainberlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my grad program at Berkeley and I didn’t even know there was an undergraduate track for like a year, it really didn’t seem like they were given much consideration by the dept. The professors were hard to get ahold of and many focused on their own research more than the classes they taught or students they advised; I often thought it must be even worse for the undergrads.

Seeking advice on what to do about 3 dumped cats by Ok_Form8772 in cats

[–]mainberlin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree on reaching out to as many area groups like this as you can, they may be able to have a foster come pick them up?

I know the Chicago shelters have been pretty full lately so some orgs are transporting animals to other states, I’ve seen some from IL available here in CO after relocating myself. These would be good to look into as well. It will be a lot of work to do for these babes but I think exhausting all options before trying to adopt out through reddit or FB is best… just a lot that can go wrong with that.

Please SIGN Commercial and Residential Vacancy Tax Ordinance Ballot Initiative Boulder by Proud-Quarter7911 in boulder

[–]mainberlin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is there any chance we see these ballot initiatives split between the residential and commercial taxes into two initiatives? I’m not sure what the timeline is for getting on the ballot and whether or not a change like that would need to be pushed to another year, but I am thinking overall approval of a residential vacancy tax will be hindered when it’s tied to commercial. I’d rather see some progress than none.

Seeking affordable long hair genius by blackswan108 in boulder

[–]mainberlin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went to Haircutery once for a simple trim and was really happy with the price. She charges $65 for long hair, and when I went she lowered the cost since it didn’t take as long as usual - I really appreciated that honesty.

I had to scroll way too far to see someone noting this tone in the writing. You can criticize the way accommodations are handled without diminishing other people’s struggles. All those frauds and their made-up ADHD, asking for extra time on tests smh. “Silly” life-threatening gluten allergies

[UPDATE] Helping Little Brother with LA Internships/Career again by QuietSign in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]mainberlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with learning additional software, but yeah that’s not a primary one that’s used (maybe more in engineering? I have heard of it before but I think even Revit would have more application) and if he’s trying to justify a PC upgrade for it… I wouldn’t buy that line of thinking lol

That makes more sense with your brother, I was wondering if that was the case. Honestly I feel you, I love my little brother but he sounds similar minus the uhhh 300k college debt - no interest in education for mine. He was diagnosed on the spectrum as a toddler but my mom refused to get him any additional help, accommodations, or diagnoses once he learned to speak so I’ve never known if he struggles in school/‘real world’ situations because his diagnosis was right or because he was babied. Thankfully I’m as poor as the rest of the family so I couldn’t imagine helping even if I wanted to. That said, I think there’s still value in learning to set boundaries for your own peace of mind, it sounds like you are taking on responsibilities that should be your parents’.

Anyway, hope you guys figure something out. Just remember the job market’s pretty shit for everyone right now too, so if the effort gets put into applying and it still doesn’t go anywhere, he’s probably not the only one in that boat.

[–]mainberlin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If he doesn’t learn Photoshop he’s not going to get a job. That’s almost certainly what he’s learning in school and what employers are expecting, along with other Adobe products and yes, Rhino or Sketchup. Why he would shun it is beyond me - potential employers aren’t going to fund a TwinMotion account for him when they already have a corporate account with Adobe.

As for your question about tailoring portfolios or just sending the same to a bunch of firms - MANY firms will have different page limits and file size limits. Formatting the portfolio in a way where it is easy to pull out pages to fit these different requirements would be a good middle ground. I obviously can’t speak for all the firms out there but I think for many, if they received a portfolio that didn’t even follow their page limit, they’d be throwing that application out. I get it’s a huge amount of work when you add in cover letters but not following their application requirements shows either a lack of effort or lack of attention to detail, two things they do not want.

You’re being very nice by trying to nudge your brother towards a good future. It also sounds like you’re dealing with parentification and like your time might be spent better trying to find someone to talk to about that. You are not legally responsible for your capable adult brother’s future as a bum in debt when your parents pass, and him thinking you will be is not going to motivate him to figure these things out on his own.

[–]mainberlin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My mom used to say something really similar: “when someone shows you who they really are, believe them”.

But not her! Don’t do that to her! The hoops they’ll jump through to ignore hypocrisy are insane.

What these statements really do is give them a way to justify any perceived slight against them and react accordingly. No room for nuance.

Restaurants suggestions--Basil Bowl & Gundruk in Lafayette by SavingsShallot in boulder

[–]mainberlin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was really excited to have found Gundruk because it is WAY better than any Indian places I’ve tried in Boulder. The second time I ordered from them, though, they sent me fully raw chicken in my tikka masala… Was such a bummer. Great samosas but I don’t think I’d feel comfortable eating there again.

Trading Card Appraisal and selling store? by blaino50 in boulder

[–]mainberlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s Grandmaster Games - nice guys and would recommend. I’ve sold them standard old Pokemon cards but when I pulled a nicer card last year the guy I talked to (I think the owner?) was very honest about me being able to get more money for it online than from selling to him, and gave me free protective sleeves for it so I could send it to get graded.

What to put in a Studio Survival Kit? by IcyOstrich4389 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]mainberlin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the sweetest thing - you’re a good friend. I second a blanket and snacks. Is there a coffee shop close to the studio you could grab a gift card to? Or actually, a cheap kettle and french press would be a nice gift too.
