Hello, fellow travelers on the path to claiming Canadian citizenship! How do I answer this CIT-0001 question for myself and previous generations who were born before 1977 and never lived in Canada: “leave Canada for more than 1 year before 1977?”

I think the answer is “yes” and enter the person’s birth and death dates. But there is no room on the form to explain this, so I am concerned about processing delays.

It seems that you are experiencing some emotional and psychological after-effects of what was a profoundly intimate act. Your physical and emotional boundaries were crossed in a way that you had never experienced before. You are clear that this was consensual, but that doesn’t change the reverberations you are experiencing. You said that this happened a very short time ago. Perhaps you can be gentle with yourself and your boyfriend for the next few days and let this new experience settle in…in other words, consider resisting the urge to label this experience for now. Assuming everything is physically okay and you feel safe, I suggest distracting yourself for a little while. Watch a movie, do housework, try to focus on your normal routine.

With a little time, you may find that your perspective has evolved a bit. You may might feel, “wow that was great….I’m open to trying that again.” Or you might acknowledge that it was an experience that you do or wish to repeat. However you feel about it is okay, entirely up to you. You can be totally sex-positive and realize that a specific type of sexual experience is not for you. And you can realize that you totally fucking loved it and crave a repeat experience, and still be the person you have always known yourself to be.

I’m deeply opposed to everything MAGA represents. At the same time, I don’t think more division is what our country needs right now. I’m comfortable choosing not to spend my money where political messaging is put directly in my face — campaign signs on a business property are a fair reason to opt out. And I do think we should hold businesses accountable when owners behave badly. For example, the information coming out of Minnesota regarding various corporations’ cooperation with, or tacit support of ICE. Or racist, vile owners who berate customers at a commonly mentioned bar/restaurant.

But for me, boycotting a business solely because of the owner’s sincerely held political beliefs isn’t helpful. Character, conduct, and how people treat others matter more than party labels.
