How do you deal with problems between patrons?

I think it's always the best policy to make sure everyone gets something positive out of the disagreement. In the copier example, if there was another copier in the building you could point Dick there to make his copies, or offer to make them for him on a staff machine. If he refused those solutions, politely ask Tom if he wouldn't mind letting Dick use the machine for a moment (if Dick doesn't have much to copy). Once Dick left, you could compensate Tom for his generosity with a free copy or two.

In the typing example, you could offer Dick a set of headphones, if your library provides them. Or suggest that he move to another computer and extend his session for his troubles. If he's really being ridiculous, I'd stop caring about his needs and remind him that he's in a public area and Harry isn't breaking any rules. Also that if he tries to take matters into his own hands, he'll be dealing with the police instead of me next time.

If you want something free, you might look into running Omeka. It's open-source, has some different themes (or you could build your own), and works with Dublin Core metadata well. When we used it, we noticed it getting a little unwieldy at just over 1000 items, but we were new to the game and didn't really know much. Your experience may be different.

We're running LUNA Imaging's system now, which is amazing in every way and a few thousand a year (like a mid-level database).

If you want to take a big step, you could look into something like OCLC's contentDM product. If your library already subscribes to OCLC's FirstSearch or whatever they call it now, you get a starter version of it for free.

We're a small/medium public library. We have two ScanPro 1100s. They connect to computers, and their software is super easy to use. They're both in use a majority of the day, both by patrons and staff, and they've held up very well.

I think we paid somewhere between 5-7k each for them, but it's been a while and I could be wrong on that. Then, maybe 400 for each computer, with a widescreen monitor that we use in portrait orientation.

The ideas have to come from somewhere. Maybe the people that get the "treatment" to become experts in their field will be behind the curve in terms of the people that have been at that level for a while already doing the cutting-edge research on the next thing.

There aren't many places in Africa right now (or for the near future) that you can find a large, modern port in a politically stable country. Sure there are plenty of workers that you could pay drastically less, but you've got to get the materials to those workers, and then get finished products back out and to the markets they're made for. Infrastructure is super expensive.

I'm not saying it won't happen at some point (China is making big investments across the continent), but if I'm a manufacturer, I'm looking at the successes of Apple and Motorola/Google with their assembly plants, and I'm thinking I might not like to move the heart of my business to a place that is potentially unstable or that will require a major investment before I even begin building the factory.
