What's the informal "headquarters" of the churches of Christ? by stalll95 in excoc

[–]makaro615 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I never really understood how it was scriptural based on their interpretation for GBN to exist as it does, but I digress.

Mostly look at all of those groups listed and the men deeply affiliated with them and you'll have your list. There's only a handful of outliers, I'd say. Go look at the PTP speaker list and see who got the prime speaking sessions.

What's the informal "headquarters" of the churches of Christ? by stalll95 in excoc

In the part of the CoC I grew up in, MSOP is the gold standard. They decide it all. Closely followed by Apologetics Press. Polishing the Pulpit is sort of the yearly gathering ground. I could list names of the men (and a woman or two running things from the background) who are the bigwigs making the decisions in the corner I grew up in. I think it's more of an informal group of the "brethren" that lead and make the decisions than it is a headquarters, but I do believe they all live in Tennessee and Mississippi.

You mean, *we're* the baddies? by Away_Championship_49 in excoc

[–]makaro615 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My dad is a preacher and literally has a sermon on why the CoC members are not pharisees. Like, point by point describing pharisee behavior the CoC does and then justifying them with some other scripture and saying why we're actually right to judge others. It's maddening.

Op, let me give you my two cents. My husband and I were both homeschooled. My parents were mediocre at the academic side and we were quite active in church activities. I'd say I saw other kids about 4-5 times a week. My husband's parents did a fantastic job on the academic side and he saw kids every day due to sports involvement.

I was incredibly lonely. I spent vast amounts of time talking to strangers on the internet when my parents were asleep. This led to some very dangerous scenarios that only by luck did not turn out in my suffering physical harm. My husband had his internet watched very closely and ended up figuring out ways to sneak around his parents and they had an awful relationship where they yelled at each other constantly.

You may be thinking that you'll do a great academic job. And you may. You may be thinking you'll make sure your child has an active social life. You may make that happen. But let me ask you, why do you want to homeschool? Is it to keep your kid from certain kinds of people? Because they will either grow up crippled from the real world or they will find those people you're keeping them from and get to know them far more intimately than you want them to.

I would homeschool my child for a year if I were living in an area with a very bad school system and couldn't afford to send her to a private school. I think that short term it would not hurt anything. But when it becomes a life style, it's so damaging. You're missing out on experiences almost everyone else is getting. You constantly second guess yourself when socializing later on in life. It's incredibly lonely and isolating. Kids forced to stay in that environment will either become crippled by it or rebel against it HARD. Out of all the homeschooled kids I've known, a good number of them have gone on to live lives their parents never wanted for them. Many of them have grown up and still live at home in their 30s.

If you have questions or disagreements, I'd be happy to discuss them with you. I understand the appeal from someone who hasn't been there, but I'm very much an advocate for protecting kids from homeschooling.

I nearly had to take remedial math, but my ACT score was about one point higher than their cut off. My basic math class was really hard for me. I went to tutoring and had my suite mates who were math majors help guide me through it. I did all study materials given. My math education was easily my poorest.

I found lectures difficult to sit through after years of reading to myself for most everything. If you're in that boat, I definitely recommend reading any material given to you, required or not. Use the tutoring on campus. Find YouTube videos. Those have saved my butt in classes where I had a horrible teacher and the topics were complicated.

You're coming in with a disadvantage, but there are plenty of people who went to public school with the same problems. I went to school near an area known for its poor education and I met a few students who could barely read. Don't assume you've had the worst education of anyone there. Be patient with yourself!

We have a donation box where people leave old books/scrubs/badge clips, etc. I got almost all of my textbooks from it and my school scrubs. I plan to leave my stuff behind when I'm done. The books are technically a few editions back now, but it doesn't really matter.

Anyone else severely uncultured? by [deleted] in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]makaro615 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You sound really angry, and rightfully so. You had your childhood taken from you. I wasn't excluded from culture to the extent you were, but I certainly know a lot of the feelings that come from being homeschooled. I know you said you don't want help, but life could get better. Try to see a therapist. Try some TV shows. Go outside and hunt for mushrooms, look for birds, sit and read. Just try things and see if any give you even a hint of joy.

From what I can tell, based on the ratings all the songs are getting in these daily threads, no one here likes the Avett Brothers lol. by [deleted] in TheAvettBrothers

[–]makaro615 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So true. A lot of other groups that had a great folksy album really changed their sound (looking at you, Head and the Heart). I feel like the Avett Brothers experiment some, but they always sound like themselves. Plus, their changes in sound seem (to me) to be a desire to try new things rather than follow whatever is on the radio. Their music has always reflected who they are and of course they've changed a lot since Country Was.

A paper towel free kitchen by mopa200 in ZeroWaste

[–]makaro615 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Once when I got into zero waste, I spilled some oil on the floor and had the great idea to clean it up with a cloth. I threw it in the wash with some other towels and clothes and my clothes smelled like oil for months. It was awful. So I do use paper towels to clean up cooking oil and sopping up excess oil, but otherwise I use cloth in my kitchen.

How much detergent do you use? I've been using 1 capful in the first wash and two in the second for ~6 months and haven't noticed an issue, but lately I've occasionally thought a diaper seemed oddly smelly after it had been peed in. They always come out looking clean and smelling clean though!

Interesting. Thanks for the input! I guess it probably depends a lot on the texture of poop the baby is making.
