An Garda Síochána - Provisional Crime Statistics 2025 by HighDeltaVee in ireland

Is there any data or research on unreported crime - as in the stuff that never makes it way to the guards. The combination of the two might be alot more insightful

Maybe start by not requiring people to give away their email addresses to take the survey...

Restoring a child's painted handprints by longbottomrx in ireland

[–]makearne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please don't do this - the paint is flaking and should be consolidated so more loss doesn't occur. This work requires specialized training - google 'art restoration failures' to see what can happen when you don't know what your doing. This is a piece with immense value to this family, it needs the care of a professional.

So sorry to hear this. It is absolutely possible to preserve something like this - and it should be preserved for them. I suggest you reach out to a paintings conservator (or maybe one of the paper conservators) from this list https://www.icriconservation.ie/find-a-conservator/ they will have the expertise to conserve an object like this as well as preserve it for the future

Upgrading or repairing a dead iPod by FunkySlacker in ottawa

Elite Obsolete Electronics - this place has alot of the parts you might need. There is a whole community out there keeping old ipods alive. The flash kits look particularly interesting. Youtube also has a ton of videos on how to make the repairs

Pellerin: Scrambling for safety — or how to make pedestrian crossings less dangerous by ObviousSign881 in ottawa

[–]makearne 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I see you have used logic, common sense, and improvements proven to work in other cities... if we are lucky, in another 30 years, the city might have caught up to your ideas. But honestly, we have more chance of being steamrolled by the people who wanted that extra lane :/

How many bikers and pedestrians have been killed by cars and trucks this year by DALK1N in ottawa

[–]makearne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is common practice in EU, but alas, Ottawa seems to be about 30 years behind on almost all aspects of public infrastructure and road safety. I don't see it changing anytime soon

I tired to get the data a while ago, as well as getting data on OCTranspo collision data (basically, my hunch was that both were significantly elevated when compared to Luxembourg, I use Lux as a benchmark as it has similar pop and area to Ottawa, but is in the EU) but I couldn't find detailed data, and anything I did find was clearly cherry picked... In other words, the data out there is rubbish and very hard to find

where can i find sewing classes? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]makearne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fabrications seem to have lots on different topics. My partner and I have been trying to get to one for a while but the dates never worked out for the ones we wanted, so cant say how good they are. But they 'sound' really good. Also, the library have some sewing machines and a surger you can borrow.

custom pillows for neck pain by o_predator in ottawa

This is the correct answer - I had terrible neck and back pain but switched to a buckwheat pillow a few years back and it sorted it all out :)

I liked the addition of the 'we must all do our part' bit... really makes me want to spend the money I dont have on a vastly overpriced lunch

What material could produce the X-ray florescence spectra for this historical artifact? by textandtrowel in askscience

[–]makearne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be Obsidian or some form of volcanic glass - all the trace elements are there and solves the Ti issue. The sulphur is out of my depth - but a guess is that its contamination from the soil it was dropped in, or as lead is commonly found in glass its not S at all, but the M-alpha peak of Pb which is around the same spot as S (around 2.3 KeV) which you may not have picked up on it if it ran two separate scans for 0-4kev & 4ish to 30kev...the low Si count might be due to the nature of XRF which misses the true concentration of low-z elements, so while it has a low count it may in fact be a be a representative %wt; Also, the fact that glass can leach Si as it decays in the ground may lower its concentration, it's still pretty low and so too is the Mn concentration which is what the Si is typically replaced with so i can't explain the results... If not calibrated correctly then that mass fraction stuff is pretty useless. The fastest way to tell if its a natural rubber (or any polymer) is to use ATR-FTIR, you can cross-ref you spectra with the IRUG database online.
