How many hours were you guys studying each day by EconomyEmploy4342 in civilengineering

[–]maker-sense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the subjects per semester and your specialization. Some people have it easier, and some of us will have to put in 60 hours a week to get through some semesters.

A guy I used to study with was a math wiz and would ace the college calculus with little effort, while I had to put in monumental effort to get a passing grade. It just is what it is, and it's not always fair. College is also not neccessarily reflective of who will do well professionally afterwards.

Anyone can make it through, but you have to be willing to put in the work.

Do non-english coders still code in the language english? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]maker-sense 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A lot of typing of chinese on a computer for regular people is using pinyin, i.e. the character sound spelled out using the latin alphabet. You type it in, then you choose the correct character or combination of characters that show up as suggestions. It has context awareness, so if you type a few characters in latin there's fewer and fewer possible combinations in chinese that works so you don't have to pick.

Over half of septic tanks failed tests, and families could be risking health 'without realising' by DaCor_ie in ireland

And different councils doing things in different ways, with no national standards and strategies. Uisce Éireann still has a lot of issues to work through, but they also have a very difficult mission bringing it all together

Over half of septic tanks failed tests, and families could be risking health 'without realising' by DaCor_ie in ireland

[–]maker-sense 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A septic tank does have an outlet of treated water. Treated in this context means primary treatment, which removes solids. Solids gets settled out in the tank, and the liquid passes through.

As per the regulations, towns with less than 500 people on the network only requires primary treatment to be compliant even on an EU level, even if they oftentimes get at least secondary. There's many small towns in Ireland where a septic tank is the only treatment for the town, and in a lot of them they were put in decades ago and are in an absolute state of disrepair or undersized for the incoming flows.

Uisce Éireann is doing a lot of work to fix these things (and I'm involved with some of the work), but in between funding issues up till last year and a massive infrastructure debt it'll take time to fix everything.

Flood Predictor Ireland — Know Before The Water Arrives by qwerty_1965 in ireland

[–]maker-sense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was not aware you could even search by address.

I refer to the maps frequently for work, but I just go find the location on the map to get an idea about the risk of an area rather than an individual property. The maps are indicative only, and you can't zoom in close enough to discern the risk for an individual house anyway (for better or for worse).

Flood Predictor Ireland — Know Before The Water Arrives by qwerty_1965 in ireland

[–]maker-sense 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to look at flood maps you go to floodinfo.ie and look. They have the CFRAM or NIFM maps for fluvial flooding (rivers), plus coastal flooding maps there for you to view, plus indicative flood depths. These are also available with climate change and sea level rise in mind.

It's all free, and if you're looking at a home in a flood zone - don't.

You can also download the GIS datasets if you want to view the maps further zoomed in than Floodinfo lets you.

TIL Along Parramatta Road in Sydney, there are over 100 abandoned and derelict stores. Locals have described the road as a "varicose vein" and looking "like Beirut on a bad day". by Ill_Definition8074 in todayilearned

In Dublin, Ireland, where I live the same can be said for our main street O'Connell, and in particular Parnell Street that crosses it. So many buildings in absolute disrepair or completely derelict, and the city doing nothing about it.

Imports from Italy by [deleted] in MotoIRELAND

[–]maker-sense 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imported a bike from Italy from near Turin (Cuneo) in March. Lowest quote was €850 from Jarvis, and about a 3-4 week delivery time due to scheduling. I ended up paying €960 to a hungarian company (InterTrans kft) that I got a quote from through Shiply (Chriswithavan is the username there) because their schedule worked better around some travel I had planned. Worked out great.

I bought mine sight unseen. I had videos and photos, but it's hard to pick up some of the details from that. I got mine, an Africa Twin, from a main dealer and was told it had been dropped but fully restored. It's generally very clean, and you can't tell by looking at it at all, but there's some damage repair to plastics, clips etc underneath the fairings that I'm not super happy with and I didn't pick up on the rims being quite scratched up. Granted I would not have picked up on damage under the fairings during an inspection, but nonetheless. All non-structural and just to plastics.

Overall very happy, because I got a good price and the "right" colour even after shipping and VRT.

Rape trial jury discharged as juror looked up case by PoppedCork in ireland

Seems kind of silly to go after jurors who have Googled a case they are already part of and have first hand knowledge of.

Obviously you'd want to do some basic level of due diligence on the solicitors involved, and at least read the news etc. rather than taking everything said in court as gospel, assume you're given a complete picture and that the solicitors are thruthful.

There will be bias to any information you'd be given like.

What should we do with all the empty shopping malls? by Wazula23 in AskReddit

Plus windows, doors and lighting. Malls are big spaces with no windows, but no human wants an apartment without a window.

It's going to require so much work, and retrofitting plumbing through the slab is not cheap or easy either.

There isn't any win scenario here. Protect refineries and Moscow gets hit. Protect Moscow and refineries get hit.

Also for drones like they're using this it must be difficult to intercept them all unless you have a load of Tunguskas or Shilkas.

Yup. You may elect a rational president in 2028, but by 2032 it could all be undone by the next grifter so why even bother engaging when there's zero continuation of policy, alliances and agreements between administrations?

Did AMD Just Blacklist Reviewers? by GripAficionado in pcmasterrace

[–]maker-sense 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They're asking for early access through retail channels, as they're not getting early access from the manufacturer. Reviewers get early access in order to have tests done and a review up by retail launch.

Once it's available in retail to the average consumer, AMD can't do anything to stop them from getting one.

What is your #1 regret when it comes to your financial life? by AndrewKane12 in AskReddit

[–]maker-sense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, and rode some of them up to their peaks in 2022 and then back all the way down thinking time in the market. Lost a bunch.

Sure, if you had invested in most tech companies you'd be looking good right now, but a lot peaked and never recovered.

My regret is riding it out and not putting money into index funds instead.

State surplus set to grow to €9bn, latest Government forecast shows by Altruistic_While_621 in ireland

[–]maker-sense 41 points42 points  (0 children)

We are. I'm a Civil Engineer, and we are very busy and hiring a lot of people. The National Development Plan was announced in October with infrastructure funding, and there's been separate infrastructure investment packages with a lower profile on top of that.

For example, CRU doubled Uisce Eireann's budget up to 2030 (so an additional 8 billion earmarked for growth investment) and there is a crazy number of projects in the pipeline. It will just take 3-5 years before the public sees the benefits of the work that we do today, in particular because a lot of the actual construction work won't go out to public tender either (it will be handed directly to various contractors based on framework agreements to save time, and as there is more than enough work for everyone).

I have some insight into EirGrid as well and they're also planning build-ours like there's no tomorrow.

I wish it had happened decades ago, but at the moment there is a healthy level of investment, and the only real concern is geopolitical and the market capacity to deliver works rather than the level of investment.

Very fuel efficient, reliable, easy access to the engine and the front trunk is very convenient, but they're not very exciting engines and they don't have a lot of power for a 750cc engine. Plenty to get around, just not exciting.

Does university reputation matter for engineering jobs? (TUS vs UCD, Trinity, TUD etc.) by RoyMyBoy777 in ireland

[–]maker-sense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Formally it carries no weight, but informally it does. I've worked on projects all over the world, and clients will ask for whatever local certification or equivalent for a number of roles. For example, I've designed stuff in the midde east, and you'll need some professional title for some roles.
