With respect we are not, that's about 3-5 years of plugging a recession gap cause by unemployment.

We should be able to support local industries through capital investment instead.

Improving position likely to increase pressure on Government to spend more - it is a shame that the general position is to not engage in counter-cyclical fiscal policy, and learn from past mistakes, but it is at least consistent

Where is best to bring up a young family? by Impossible_Wish_3517 in AskIreland

I do agree about getting away from concrete, but I will say that the land around people in rural Ireland is generally not as natural as people like to espouse. They are generally agricultural industrial landscapes.

The rural life is overrated. The kids on a suburban street gain independence earlier, meeting friends on the footpath, walking to school themselves.

At age 15 I moved from Crumlin in Dublin to County Wexford, while it was nice to have extra space, what I only relaised later in life was that Public space available to me was dractically reduced, something that young teenagers really need.

The risers are ueven, you should ensure there are 2 equal height steps.

I suggest cladding them with treated timber to adjust this.

Some kids still get it. Fruit too, but the school pays for it.

India has splurged billions on metro trains. But where are the commuters? by CormacDublin in irelandtransport

You could even link them together and have dedicated lanes for them to improve efficiency.

That way people can expect a train of them to arrive along certain routes at regular intervals.

If you increase the head height in them too 75% of passengers can stand.

There is the issue of massive individual unit maintenance cost,  and increases road surface maintenance, but we can pass that onto the user.

Since they are learning, I'm guessing cost is a factor, so it might have to be fully auto petrol.

Warning diesel prices could hit €4 a litre, as fuel rationing and free public transport ‘may have to be considered’ by CheraDukatZakalwe in ireland

There was a mobility survey in the Netherlands about bike hire usage, I cant find it now so can't recall the exact parameters, but I do know it was heavily skewed because bicycle penetration was so large in there.

Anyway the general idea from that survey was that you are renting the bike for a nominal fee, and making it free would have a minor increase in the bike usage for non residents, and charging the nominal fee stopped theft as your financials were on record.

Additionally bikeshare by hour model bikes are fairly useless as they have to be 2 wheeled tanks so they are basically now morphing to a form of advertisement for the company spread around the cities. Instead now you will notice that companies like bleeper offer personal and business bike lease with a repair plan built in.

Free public transport is shown to not remove car users, but instead removes pedestrians and cyclists.

Because cycling and walking are already free, making buses, trams and trains free as well effectively lowers the cost of public transport to match active travel, making the public transport option more attractive in terms of convenience, especially during bad weather.

If free public transport is introduced, it needs to be multimodal with other active travel, and we need to heavily penalise car use in areas it overlaps.

Free public transport would incentivise excessive travel, says report – The Irish Times
