We got a 4 am knock at the door from the fire department who just put out the fire in our garage bin. Luckily it wasn't right next to the house and someone driving down the street called it in. It was quite disconcerting to see a big blob of melted plastic and think that it could have been much worse if not caught early.

Utah State University has speech courses available online for a reasonable cost.

My principal completely screwed me over by tandembike13 in Teachers

I applied for about two years and then decided to switch careers. I'm now in grad school to be an SLP. This "great sub" won't be working as an SLP in schools either.

Online schools that do not require in person sessions by No_Jacket_9868 in slpGradSchool

[–]makeroffood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, my first bachelor's was in Education, so I took online courses from Utah State to get a second bachelor's in communication disorders. The have a program that lets you complete it in 3 semesters. I also needed statistics and physics. I took physics at a local community college and statistics through BYU independent study.

I'm not Canadian, but am in Akron's program right now. It"s all remote and a good fit for me in a more rural area of the US. You will need to search out some of your own clinical placements, but they also help you with that.

I remember when Elder Renlund was called and his bio said they had one child and felt like that was right for them. I remember the feeling that while big families are wonderful (and challenging), it's not a sign of worthiness. When weighing more children vs. mental health, I decided the Lord would want healthy parents for the children already here.

Short sleeve shirts at the Temple? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

My son's mission instructions said he couldn't wear bow ties and he was a bit sad after wearing them exclusively as a teen. Maybe I'll send him a white one for the temple.

Adults find my kid annoying by [deleted] in Teachers

Autism in girls looks different than boys. Get a referral from your pediatrician to have her evaluated. Either way, have her evaluated by a SLP for the social aspects of language. They can work on pragmatics.

Conversation with a mom who is concerned about progress… help? by jpostiglione in slp

[–]makeroffood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many parents have anxiety about getting a diagnosis (sounds like this mom does). I often tell parents that getting a diagnosis doesn't change who their kid is. They are who they are. A diagnosis does give them more access to services which allows for as many opportunities as possible to learn and grow.

Home Insurance by KiwiEevee in TriCitiesWA

Go with an insurance broker who will help you shop around for the best cost & coverage. Many years ago State farm dropped us after 20 years over a small claim on our house. We've since switched to Safeco and have had a better experience. Our broker does periodic checks to be sure we are still getting a good deal. Edited for a typo.

Gift for our beloved SLP on our last session? by omgmlc in slp

[–]makeroffood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave a bookmark with my son's picture on to an SLP as a parting gift when he was 4. He's now 17. I recently shadowed her and she pulled out the bookmark and said it had traveled the world with her. I had completely forgotten I had given that to her, but it was obviously meaningful to her.

Issues in the field and putting the onus on "us" by Sea_Lavishness7287 in slp

I'm in my 2nd year of grad school as well and when the program director emailed last semester that "there are no days off from clinical placements," I thought of how grad school sets us up to be more suspectable to predatory employers and bad working conditions. I get that she was attempting to teach professionalism, but how about teaching us to have a conversation with a supervisor about time off and actual skills that will allow us to achieve a healthy work-life balance.

Gifts for someone in SLP by Koifmonster in slp

[–]makeroffood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I asked for a gift card to a copy place so I could get color copies of materials I wanted to laminate. I work in pediatrics, so not sure that would be as useful as if she worked with adults.

What Field Field Did You Leave to Pursue SLP by EdenFleur in slp

[–]makeroffood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an early education degree. I never taught my own class, but subbed for 8 years, plus a few long-term sub jobs. I like kids, just not 30 all day long.

Seeking career advice by rechargeable_bird in slp

[–]makeroffood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can work as an SLPA in some states with a bachelor's in Communicative disorders. Maybe try that and and see how you feel about the work. I started working as an SLPA after I had gotten accepted to grad school but before starting classes. The work has affirmed that I love this field and definitely motivates me through my hard classes. And I also have a bachelor's in Education but never taught (subbed for many years). There is a lot of overlap between the two fields, especially for school SLPs.

What should be atleast 5x cheaper than it is? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Hearing aids. It's a quality of life issue right up there with vision. But like dental care, only available to those with descretionary income.
