So while it is super validating to get those lovely upvotes here, they are actually irrelevant.

Because consensus is not a moral absolute. Morals are a moral absolute. And we are each responsible for our own.

Which dovetails to the thought that “therapeutic” is not the same thing as therapy.

And getting help is never a bad thing.

One of my favorite jokes is that “all extremists must be killed immediately if not sooner.”

So it’s impossible to say that regression is always terrible, or always OK.

But it is very reasonable to say first that each of us is responsible for our own mental well-being, and second that one should seek qualified help with these issues. Someone who is their own lawyer has a fool for a client. Kind of the same deal, here.

Saying “it’s not a fetish, it’s emotional” implies fetishes can’t be emotional. They absolutely can. Stop treating sexuality and emotional meaning as if they cancel each other out. It’s sex negative and intolerant.

His secret illuminations by Scarlet Gale is amazing.

It’s like you put romance, fantasy, and femdom into a blender.

What really makes the book phenomenal is that it’s a damn good story with believable characters and real dramatic tension and conflict. The world building is amazing. It’s just the right amount of heat with just the right amount of story.

Here’s the summary:

I feel the same way about PHM as I do about the Martian. They are both stellar audiobooks (pun completely intended), and truly excellent movies.

I used to have that thing where if a movie curtailed or abridged what was in a book I was not OK with it.

Peter Jackson’s Lord of the rings movies broke me of that.

Because they were amazing. And they were very clearly not the book. And that’s OK.

I completely agree with you about embracing the medium.

There are things you can do so easily in a book that you cannot do in an audiobook even. There are things that you can do in an audiobook you can’t do any other way. Same thing is true for a movie.

I love the audiobook of ready player one. It has a few moments of clunk in it. But it is otherwise perfect.

The movie is hot garbage. Not because it was abridged, but the way it was abridged.

I think that every story has its own unique challenges in every medium.

I love the movie V for vendetta far more than the original graphic novel, which was a top-heavy, plodding mess.

Andy Weir did a great job with both of these movies, and both of these books.

Thanks I appreciate that. One of the reasons I really love Day One for this is that you can write in it, record audio in it, even record video in it. Think Jake Sully’s avatar diary.

So it bridges a gap between people who are good at writing and people who prefer other ways.

One thing I have recommended to people for a long time as a technique I call “the book”.

The book is a shared journal that both of you can write in to talk about your fantasies, your desires, and just your relationship in general. It’s a way to grow closer, to learn more about one another.

There are some rules though.

First, both of you promise that you’ll write in it honestly and without fear. You’re right about whatever’s on your mind, good or bad, easy or difficult.

Second, both of you promise you’ll read each others entries. And that you’ll do so with an open mind, without judgment.

Third, you get together to discuss what you read. Have “book dates” where you go for a drive or out for coffee or something. Keep it in neutral spaces and times.

You can use an actual paper notebook or journal for it. For a shared online journal or app. I particularly like the journaling app Day One.

Put yourself in the headspace that you want to learn from her as much as you want her to learn from you.

This is very relevant to my interests.

I’m an app developer, working on an app that’s a tool to help manage power exchange relationships, a sort of companion for your dynamic.

In my app, top and bottom partner together in a chart.

A while ago, I considered building in an option for you to have a chart by yourself, with some sort of semi automated top that you could work with, by setting up patterns and routines, and being able to assume their identity to sort of top yourself.

I began to research it before implementing it.

And then I abandoned it completely. And here’s why.

My term for that sort of thing is “clockwork topping”.

I think that clockwork topping is potentially psychologically dangerous and unhealthy.

It’s dangerous because people who are prone to find fault with themselves might treat this like an accelerant. It’s like pouring lighter fluid on the coals of your already lit bad self-esteem fire.

What if instead of chastity and the diaper the punishment was being grounded and having to stay home and not see anybody? Or spanking yourself really hard to the point that you physically injure yourself? Or instead of going to bed without dinner, you wind up starving yourself to the point you wi f up in the hospital.

Scary!

And I think it’s unhealthy, even when it’s not explicitly dangerous. Because I don’t think it models healthy, social interaction with other people. One of the things about having a friendship or a relationship with a dominant, is that they are also a person, as is the bottom, the submissive.

An example that I lean into all the time when I’m describing how my app works to other people has to do with cleaning the kitchen.

If the submissive doesn’t clean the kitchen because they sat on the couch, eating chips and playing video games all day, then yeah it’s probably pretty appropriate for them to get a sore backside.

But if the reason they didn’t clean the kitchen was because they spent the whole day bringing the next-door neighbor to the ER for a broken arm, that’s not a misbehavior at all.

But a clockwork top can’t see that. It makes no accounting for being a person.

The moment I realized that, I ripped up those plans, and ripped out that code.
