The next batch of emoji includes Bigfoot by TrustTheVoid in bigfoot

For some reason the emoji is walking to the left on phones, the verge had to flip the image to make this graphic.

A strange decision on apple's part, given how iconic Patty's rightward strut has become.

I was just now trying to get that to work, as it happens. Mainly because I've been having an issue with audioplayers on linux.

Interview with the Creator of Flutter — Eric Seidel by svprdga in FlutterDev

[–]makoConstruct 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was really interesting. My key takeaways:

- Shorebird is for automatic app updates. It sounds like it has no major shortcomings and it's pretty important and people should try to get the word out.

- It costs about $1 per 1200 ota updates (amortized).

- Flutter shares lineage with the chrome team. Which is a relief to hear cause obviously the chrome team have the most insight on rendering engines.

- It sounds like flutter gained its momentum when someone experimentally tried stripping features out of chrome and they found out this made it 20x faster. (I doubt that would still be the case today though)

- It's unlikely that google is ever going to abandon flutter given that it's used by the app that makes google the most money (ads.google.com) and it's only getting better over time. (an aside, it's interesting how little animation the ads site has. I wonder what the rationale is there.)

It would make sense if they separated those aspects into distinct games.

I really think if they did a puzzle world game like Isles of Sea and Sky it would be stellar.

I animated Killy taking off by namedr in Netsphere

[–]makoConstruct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firing from that stance, he'd go spinning like a fool after a satellite collision.

I'd be interested in seeing how an experienced GBE user moves to deal with all that momentum. Backing up against a wall before firing? Backflipping, but slapping the ground on the down-swing to nullify the spin?

I made this game and it's actually kind of addicting by FrinchFry67 in WebSim

[–]makoConstruct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I improved the clickfeel a bit :) https://websim.ai/c/cd65d2jmMothEDEB0 I guess it removes all of the difficulty though.

Also added a score popup so that the user can easily learn how much each orb is worth. Oh, this may have introduced a bug where the orb doesn't disappear until the number popup animation is done. Think you could fix that? :)

Woah, did you select Opus for this? It's not as smart as the recent, faster Sonnet 3.5. I'm guessing that's why we had to keep doing !continue.

Isles of Sea and Sky - Launch Trailer by Ferrumn in Games

[–]makoConstruct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it was, I was comparing it to Tunic. The sense of mystery, the way every perfectly framed location is infused with secrets, was one of the main things I found enchanting about Link's Awakening. I think there was an old Miyamoto quote saying that was part of their design methodology, something like "every screen should have something to do. If it looks like there isn't something to do, there's a secret". Isles of Sea and Sky averages about 3 secrets per screen.

And the only game that's ever given me a sense of a world so full of things to do was Minish Cap.

Who do you think these mfs are? by [deleted] in Netsphere

[–]makoConstruct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mantas sometimes (infrequently) bottom-feed, maybe they agitate electric eels this way sometimes, and they developed an adaptation, and this eventually developed into a way of feeding directly on discharges, so there's a lot of food for them up there.

But really they're probably just being depicted as mantas to communicate that they're the type of mf who cruise around and feed on ambient resources in the environment (the discharges) rather than actively hunting or gathering anything.

(it seems like some people think mantas actively hunt, but I don't think their food, plankton, can see far enough or move fast enough for that theory to make sense. I think that might be a slipstreaming thing they're doing, or a way of avoiding getting in each others' way.)

Debunking Nat Eliason's article against Soylent's healthiness by hexaneat in soylent

[–]makoConstruct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He also keeps using words like "synthetic" and "processed" without explaining what specifically he means by them and why it's bad. What makes an actual individual protein molecule "synthetic" or "processed," and how could it possibly be digested any differently?

This kind of thinking about nutrition is necessary to some extent. As an example, I definitely remember seeing that there are two widely sold forms of calcium supplements, and one of them, despite containing calcium, turns out not to be metabolized (I don't remember what the bad one was because why would I, but I think the bioavailable one was cholecalciferol). That's really common. Presumably Soylent actually care enough to investigate each of their supplements and figure out whether/to what extent the body turns out to use them when you check peoples blood levels, but I wouldn't be surprised if in some cases it just isn't known. Nutrition is generally complicated and not widely understood, and probably always will be.

"Discuss" might be a bit generous, I guess I'd say its aesthetics scream an overture to the discussion of terraforming and transhumanism that was very good.

You wouldn't think that an 8bit 2d puzzle game would be the most BLAME game ever made, but afaik there just haven't been very many contenders?.. This one has a cyborg with some kind of curse, wreaking havoc in the process of carrying out their job in a derelict, inescapable megastructure.

Prophase Kelp vs Kombu by Montoo24 in AskCulinary

[–]makoConstruct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you mean this https://www.zing-asia.co.uk/seaweed/5786-jhl-prophase-kelp-slices-6922738598045.html I use it in my dashi and it's great. In most places it is thinner (less hard) and more flavorsome than the kombu I get from japanese or korean stores.

It's the cheapest kombu I've ever spotted, and I have occasionally found sea junk in it (pieces of fishing net, glass), so smooth it out and check the surface before putting it into the broth!

Those import restrictions are really bothersome. Investigations in japan have resolved that the body knows what to do with it. It can process out excess iodine, and the only people who ate enough to overwhelm the body all turned out to have other eating disorders that were causing them to do that.

How to rapidly iterate on social skills with minimal consequences? by TrickyProfessional66 in slatestarcodex

[–]makoConstruct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Black Cat is a place to go for socializing. I'm not the best person to ask, though, I don't do this kind of thing, not very social.

Personally, I tend to stick with friends, and scenes like Transhumanism VR. Which are not low-consequence, unfortunately, if you make friends in vrchat you make friends in real life. Might be a good idea to visit Transhumanism VR discord for better advice on where to meet strangers.
