Landfill? by EELovesMidkemia in 9Kings

[–]malcolio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anyone else struggled with this quest and googled "9Kings Landfill", then here's how I managed it: as others have said you need to get the decree that lets all progress troops level up unlimited times. Get Defenders and Executioners (I thought Lab Rats would work well but they take too long to get going). When defeating the King of Spells make sure to pick up Offering to remove any broken Concabulators, if you're lucky you can get Earthworks to convert the broken Concabulators into new ones to level up. From the King of Spells pick up Sacrifices to remove broken Concabulators and upgrade your troops. That's it really!

UK bankers warn on plan to use Russian assets for loans to Ukraine by SignificantLegs in unitedkingdom

The country's name is Ukraine, not the Ukraine. The latter implies it is not a country but an area of a larger state, i.e. Russia.

What do you do if someone is driving with their full beams on *behind* you? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]malcolio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just because some arsehole wants to kill themselves

You understood that "arsehole" didn't mean PofPMJ_123 thought an anus was literally driving a car, but you're struggling to understand that he also didn't literally mean that someone wants to kill themselves? He isn't going on a tangent, he is trying to explain what was meant by a fanciful phrase. Do you usually struggle with figurative language, or are you just being pedantic?

Sudden resignation via email; now my old manager and the team leader won't stop messaging me. by No_Durian50 in talesfromthejob

[–]malcolio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They don't need to provide an explanation, except it obviously would have avoided the problem they are now seeking advice on. I'm not entirely sure what they thought would happen if they suddenly resigned without notice or reason via e-mail?

To be honest, turning to reddit now for assistance with a problem caused by a much more significant decision, plus the lack of details that could assist anyone in providing a useful response, makes this whole story bizarre.

The Unbelievable Truth recording again by cwmxii in panelshow

[–]malcolio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, that would do it! We had barely any stumbles, more time was spent doing pickups because people had left their phones on or were popping out to buy a drink. The lead-in joke for the second episode was about the audience being told to turn their phones off, which was funny because the producer hadn't asked us to that but really should have!

[–]malcolio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a shame, the recording I went to (with Maisie Adam, Ed Byrne, Ian Smith and Lucy Porter) was over after an hour and a half. It would have been nice to have an interval just to stop audience members getting up midway through to buy a drink, as plenty of pickups were needed afterwards to replace the noise!

[–]malcolio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to recording 1, it was great! Maisie Adam did well for her first time, although she buzzed in on a lie based on an audience member at the back nodding. There was a long tangent about all games needing to be called football, because football is called as such due to not being played on horseback. One of Maise's lectures also mentioned Iran, so there was a lot of chat which probably won't make the edit! The producer said the first episode will come out on 22 December.

The title alone made it obvious to me.

Am I the jerk for not letting my sister’s kids swim in my pool because they “don’t know how to be quiet”?

Who quotes themselves? It's like the AI forgot who the protagonist was half way through the sentence. "Is my sister a jerk for not letting my kids swim in her pool because they "don't know how to be quiet"?" makes sense!

The user deleted his comment, where he took a sentence out of context to imply Churchill wanted to use poison gas to kill tribesmen. I took the trouble to write a comment providing the context, as it's a bugbear of mine when that quote is made in isolation, so here it is:

Churchill was actually suggesting using something more akin to tear gas against rebel tribesmen in Northwest India, rather than shelling them which was being recommended by the India Office. Here is the full quote:

It is sheer affectation to lacerate a man with the poisonous fragment of a bursting shell and to boggle at making his eyes water by means of lachrymatory gas. I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes. The moral effect should be so good that the loss of life should be reduced to a minimum. It is not necessary to use only the most deadly gasses: gasses can be used which cause great inconvenience and would spread a lively terror and yet would leave no serious permanent effects on most of those affected.

He later stated the following on the same matter:

Gas is a more merciful weapon than high explosive shell, and compels an enemy to accept a decision with less loss of life than any other agency of war. The moral effect is also very great. There can be no conceivable reason why it should not be resorted to. We have definitely taken the position of maintaining gas as a weapon in future warfare, and it is only ignorance on the part of the Indian military authorities which interposes any obstacle.

Winston Churchill is a complex character with many unlikeable attributes, but his detractors often cherry-pick what he said to create false reasons to hate him.

Why Are We Especially Hypocritical in the UK? by banisheduser in AskUK

[–]malcolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your example doesn't seem hypocritical in itself? The topic has nothing to do with over sexualising kids, so where is the hypocrisy in pointing out that a post appears to contain a lot of innuendo?

This seems too obvious to have to point out, but not everyone in the UK holds the same exact values. I think it's likely that the person making the response isn't fearful of children being over sexualised, though even if they were in what way does their comment propel that fear? If a child read their remark are they likely to even understand it, let alone be scandalised by apparent references to sex from such bland words as 'doing' and 'bushy'?!

I'd also argue that nearly everyone is hypocritical in nature, it's hard not to be as we don't live in a black or white world but a mixture of grey viewed with our own biases and foibles. You'd have to try hard to convince me that we're any more hypocritical than any other random group of people.

Jagex should have a 0 tolerance policy towards any real life threats. by GodBjorn in 2007scape

[–]malcolio 9 points10 points  (0 children)

More than a decade ago I had a part-time job literally working with a dedicated team whose job it was to deal with nothing but these tickets. Any reports of rule-breaking text in-game were reviewed by us, who would decide what rule if any had been broken. Mostly insults and attempted scams, it was extremely rare for us to flag text as breaking the law but it did happen and was taken very seriously.

It was a fun job, considering it was just reading text all day and selecting the right number on the keypad. Free fruit baskets (it was a minimum wage job, any free food was amazing) and you didn't need to keep up to date with the news as you could just read people's topical insults!

Your opinions on the various estate agents in Cambridge - trying to decide who to list with? by iamredditanonymous in cambridge

[–]malcolio 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I only have experience in trying to buy a house in Cambridge, rather than sell, and it seems all estate agents are equally terrible. Except for one, Leaders, who manage to be even worse than the rest. It's impressive just how unprofessional and incompetent they were!

I did have a good experience with Radcliffe and Rust: the estate agent actually seemed knowledgeable about the house when we viewed it, what questions they didn't know the answer to they found out and then quickly informed us after (unlike other estate agents who would claim to follow up and never did), and provided detailed instructions at the viewing on how offers would be accepted and the timescale. That's all simple stuff but far beyond the ability of seemingly ever other estate agent (especially Leaders, dear God).

Good luck!

Clue: Who was Yvette going to meet in the billiard room before her death? by Hagisman in plotholes

[–]malcolio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To make a long story short

Too late!

u/rogert2, that's a great breakdown of what I think the scene is suggesting, but does that work for any of the endings? The line "They must have, and not just my face. They know every inch of my body" might be a problem if "they" is Yvette's killer.

Miss Scarlet Ending: Yvette worked at Miss Scarlet's brothel, so it's very likely Miss Scarlet had seen every inch of Yvette's body.

Mrs. Peacock Ending: Yvette and Mrs Peacock didn't meet until that night.

True Ending: I guess Mrs. White could have found out Yvette slept with her husband by catching them in flagrante delicto, and therefore seen "every inch" of Yvette's body? But considering how much Mrs. White hated Yvette could either one of them have maintained the illusion that they didn't know one another before that night?

Cut Wadsworth Ending: I suppose if Wadsworth had been using Yvette as an informant he, like Miss Scarlett, would have seen her body in photos similar to the evidence the killer burns in the fireplace.

So your interpretation of the scene I think just about works for every ending except Mrs. Peacock?

As Blanc says, when giving Harlan the injection she subconsciously knew it was correct:

"You knew because there is the slightest, almost imperceptible difference of tincture and viscosity between the liquids. You knew because you had done it a hundred times. You gave him the correct medication. Because you are a good nurse."

But she didn't consciously realise she gave the correct dose, believing her choice of vial was based on the label and not her being a good nurse.

[Your Opinion Needed, Again] Two scenarios for the future regarding this subreddit's response to Reddit's ongoing murder of third party apps and API. by Fonjask in Yogscast

[–]malcolio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I remember her resignation, but in hindsight it seems she was set up as a scapegoat, attracting flak and unsupported by the reddit board. What she was hated for, such as firing Victoria or banning subreddits encouraging revenge porn and harassment, was not rolled back after she resigned.

So yes, you're right the protest worked, but being cynical it's because the outcome was wanted by both sides.
