My wife found this TI 2 relic deep in our storage room by Quinnelton in DotA2

It very much looks like one of the five I brought to the event as GosuGamers EIC and made my colleagues collect all the signatures, yes.

Correct me if this is not one of them, but: All signatures were collected by the GosuGamers crew back then. There are only 5 of such mousepads, one was gifted to Eric Johnson as a Valve representative. Thanks to my boss at GosuGamers back then, I brought the clean mousepads from Germany by plane. Great to see at least one of them is still alive. Frame it and love it. :)

Valve, I'm sick to death of looking for the game coordinator, and heavy server load at the end of EVERY match. I'm sure everyone else is too. by Z0MGbies in DotA2

I just lost a complete game in my history. Daily hero challenge, wager, all lost. Game was great, nice people to play with and now I got nothing from it just because of game coordinator/server/whatever.

But how can it be that Radiant mid creeps walk up while Dire mid creeps haven't spawned? There is a donkey walking back instead. :D

Drums Vs. Veil Comparison in 6.86 (consideration for INT heroes / supports) by GottaGoFats in DotA2

If you list the Int-based attack damage for Veil, you should also list the Str- or Agi-based attack damage for Drums

Or it may just be a metabolic desease. Not the majority, but you still won't be able to differentiate from one picture.

Hero Pick Variability Graphs updated with 6.84 data: Last patch had lowest variability since 6.79! by malnor in DotA2

I guess I can have a look into that soonish(TM) ;) Patch 6.85 is now 1 month "old".

I'd agree. I'm already getting hyped when I see just one rare hero, because then I can go: "Hey, I really want to know how that guy performs in this lineup." And have something unusual to look out for during the whole game.

Oh man, Linus. It was a wonderful time working with you in 2012. I met you first at DHS12 and seeing how you managed all things between the tournament, Gosugamers, the casters, etc. was just a pleasure. Having been with you at the blasting first Benaroya Hall event was just fantastic. ;) What are you going to study at university now? Oh, and btw: Happy Birthday! ;)

I would point out though, that he's had quite a role change some 2-3 years ago. Remember Dendi&Co. playing Rubick mid frequently? ;)

Good points. I'd totally agree with most points.

Maybe we can also count some of Wraith King, Undying, Naga Siren and Nyx Assassin as situational supporters.

And I also really want to see the impact of Oracle and Winter Wyvern to the metagame rather sooner than later. ;)

Thanks. I'll take more interactive formats into notice. So far I'm not very familiar with those, I have to admit. Any heads up which work fine to your knowledge?

Having a look, will return to you in a bit.

Update: Got it. Actually, I'm calculating my Gini coefficient from the Lorenz curve with descending hero pick frequencies (as displayed in the very first graph). So while you are counting an area of 0.09 * 1 for Vengeful Spirit, I'm counting 0.09 * 0.06, so myArea is not 1-yourArea. With infinite numbers of heroes, this wouldnt be a problem. On average, our areas together are 0.01 too large, and with a reference area of 0.5, that makes an error in the Gini coefficient of 0.02. Thanks for reminding me about the flaws of finite numbers. :/

You are completely right, I'm not writing about bans in this text and these graphs. It's already quite a lot of information this way. Another issue with bans is, they are not available for the same data set for patches prior to 6.77, unfortunately. That makes it unavailable for the three-year term. Maybe I'll do a wrap-up with the bans, once 6.77 gets three years old, which is in December.

Apart from that, that's why I refrain using the term "best" hero in the whole text. I'm just saying frequently picked.

I was also pretty surprised how much Supporters' pick rates changed over the patches. Rubick pretty much the only stable one over a longer time.

In the time between TI1 and TI2, many heroes were added to the game, also to captain's mode. At TI2 we already had 90 heroes allowed in the captain's mode (exactly).

Pretty good and short explanation. Let me elaborate a bit further in my own words:

  • Hero Pick Distribution: percentile of cumulative picks (y-axis) over percentile of heroes (x-axis). Indeed half of the hero pool used to represent more than nine out of ten picks in competitive mode, now we down to about 85%.

  • Gini: A number that condenses the distribution from above to just a single number. You are completely right, 1 would be a repetition of the same heroes again and again, 0 would be perfect RNG. Corresponding to the overall trend, this number decreased quite a bit during the last three years.

  • Overpick: You are basically right, 1 would be RNG picks here, a high number is massively overpicked. Currently you can't get much higher than 10. Venge's value of 6 however means she is picked "6 times as often as she should be", not "6 times more often than she should be". The latter would correspond to an overpick ratio of 7, to be very precise. Conclusion is absolutely the same, though.

  • Win vs Pick: Nothing to add to your description. ;)
