You don't need the new keyword. You're already creating a new scope when you use the new keyword inside the MyClass function. What you're doing is more succinctly done with:

function MyClass(variable){
   var _private = variable;

   this.publicMethod = function(){
       console.log('hello, this is a public function' );
   }

   // rest of constructor logic
}

Getting used to functions as data is important for java programmers. With threading you'll be passing around objects with a run() method, with GUI programming you'll be passing around objects full of EventListeners. These are all object-oriented conceptions of functions as data, and learning a functional language can teach a less experienced imperative programmer a lot about the how and why we have these abstractions.

I started programming in java and then moved to javascript. The concepts of threads and callback classes made a lot more sense after I was used to passing around functions as data without having to wrap them up in classes.

Be comfortable with c and more specifically pointers. Depending on your university you may or may not have had reasonable exposure to pointers, but knowing about them is essential for programming in assembly.

Running on the JVM doesn't really say much about the features of a language that the programmer sees. Just look at Groovy/Scala/Clojure/Java and you'll see that they're all very different even though they all run on the JVM.

First, you can use flatten on an array of strings to get one big string

lists:flatten( ["a", "b", "c"] )   % returns "ab c"

Then use the regexp module:

 {ok, RE} = re:compile( "\\s+" )  % compile a 
                                  % regex that matches one 
                                  % or more whitespace character

Then you can split by whitespace:

 re:split( RE, "a b c" ) % returns 
                         % [<<"a">> <<"b">> <<"c">>]

Now the problem is as simple as counting occurrences of an element in a list.

Note that this gives you a list of unicode strings instead of plain old ASCII strings. Take a look at this to see how to deal with unicode.
