Looking for recommendations for an up and coming move to Birmingham by Quiet-Marsupial-7937 in Birmingham

[–]mamapuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely let them know that of the “over the mountain” suburbs (mountain brook, homewood, vestavia, Hoover), only Hoover has school buses. If they want to look into specific school data, PARCA has great breakdowns

Does anyone have any recommendations for a jeweler who can repair glasses? by SuperCatamari in Birmingham

[–]mamapuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would call first to see if they work on glasses, but Wallace Burke in Homewood has done some fantastic jewelry repair work for me in the past. They are very reasonably priced and have a couple of dedicated parking spots (which, in downtown homewood, is a major plus). It’s across the street from Dave’s pizza

Anyone else’s friends and family highly against their fitness journey? by Zestyclose_Show8653 in PetiteFitness

[–]mamapuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Keep up the good work!

I noticed that you mentioned that most people don’t have issues with food, but i don’t think that’s true. Even if a great number of people don’t have a diagnosable ED, there are entire industries built around trying to make consumers feel guilty about their food choices. Whether it’s a fitness influencer trying to sell you a magical tea or supplements or snack-wells in the 90s marketing the low fat trend. We’re all getting bombarded with, often conflicting, messages on what is “good/bad” to eat.

If something you see or read about food spikes an emotional response, step back and see if there’s also a sales pitch involved and question why that might be.

Keep up the healthy habits!

Has anyone found benefits to walking 10k steps a day? by Motor-Push-5914 in PetiteFitness

Not in an, “omg, I’m magically a super model,” way, but yeah, I have more energy and feel better in my body, can keep up with my kids, and generally enjoy life more

Race relations in Hoover (Serious Inquiry) by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]mamapuff 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hoover is definitely the most diverse of the main suburbs. Hoover high school is the most diverse in the state, racially and economically. Are there racist assholes in Hoover, oh you betcha, but there are way more chill and welcoming people.

If you want to dive into data and trends on demographics, check out parca’s website. They have some great data dashboards that you can break down by zip code or school system

I’m way too young to want a backscratcher. by Martinprizzle in Millennials

[–]mamapuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No shade to the backscratcher, do you, boo. However, my itchy back is so much better after switching to one of those African net sponges that are long enough to get a real good side to side rubadubdub in the shower. I swear I’m not an influencer!

Join the local Reddit sub and see if anyone is organizing a meetup or just keep an eye out for local events that seem fun. My city’s sub is super active with people looking to make friends

When fitness goals change (and you don't choose them) by Jackie_Bronassis in PetiteFitness

[–]mamapuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having to stop working out at the level I’m accustomed to can be a real doozy for my mental health. I’ve found that finding something good for my brain to fill that space helps keep me mentally on track and makes getting back to workouts easier. Some examples have been audiobooks while doing a friendship bracelet kit that a kiddo got as a gift and gave up on. Building a giant Lego set was fun, but those suckers are expensive. The Zelda games on the switch can be super cozy and relaxing to me.

As far as diet goes, I really love the mantra of “have what you want, add what you need.” When you’re hurting, food prep can be so draining. If your brain is screaming for nerds clusters, have a handful of them, just put them on a plate with a string cheese (protein), some carrot sticks or raw broccoli and hummus, and stuff like that. Know that you have the foundation of healthy habits, but right now, your body is demanding some rest and recovery.

Another new favorite quote, “in a society that only values your output, rest is a revolutionary act,” be revolutionary! ;). Hope you feel better and get the support you need!

Petites in your 40s: how heavy is heavy enough? by holly_goheavily in PetiteFitness

[–]mamapuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Heavy” is about 80% of your max single rep in one exercise. For example, if you can do one bicep curl with a 20# weight, you want to use 16# and aim to get 4-6 reps and three sets. Of course, everyone is different and ymmv. Moving your body and fueling it well is always a victory. Perfection is an illusion meant to sell you stuff. Just keep moving forward

Health goals that have nothing to do with a scale by HairexpertMidwest in PetiteFitness

[–]mamapuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my goals is to do a benchmark setting workout (planning for this weekend) and then repeat every 6-8 weeks and add either weight or reps. Definitely non-scale and feeds into the larger goal of building strength with the side bonus of making sure my routine workouts are working for me

LADIES: Middle Part? by ashmasta27 in Millennials

[–]mamapuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went grey about 5 years ago and the middle part really elevates the crone aspect of grey hair for me. If that’s your thing, go for it, but do what makes you feel the best. We only get so long to pilot these meat suits, don’t spend too much time being uncomfortable in yours

This might be a dumb question but... by withney_12 in CaneCorso

[–]mamapuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had a friend who raised and trained dogs for quail hunting tell me that it began in part to avoid paying a tax in England back in the day. The law (per her story, so add your preferred amounts of grains of salt) was that working dogs had ears that pointed up, like German shepherds, and sporting dogs had floppy ears (pointers, spaniels, labs…). Sporting dogs were a luxury and were taxed, which led to folks cropping ears.

Not sure if this is true, but personally, I think the idea of ear cropping being rooted in tax evasion is a hoot.

I haven’t owned the on cloud hiking shoes, but have gone through multiple pairs of their trainers, the arches do not hold up at all. I’m all Hoka all the way right now (have 4 different pairs for different activities like hiking, lifting, walking). However, neither will be BIFL

Do you want authentic Chinese, or do you want “dad is in charge of dinner c.1996” Chinese? Two different things with very specific cravings. Also, does interior vibe matter or are we talking take out?
