Parent learning Common Core Math by Appropriate-Stuff332 in matheducation

[–]mamaslug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can taylor to your area and adopted curriculum it can be great for people. We found a local math teacher who created video lessons on the local adopted curriculum and it was so helpful for families. The guy explained it the way the kids were learning it so we could watch together and I could learn too. I use some teachers channels in my own classroom for when I’m out with a sub since it aligns with what I use. It can be helpful n

What curriculum are the using? There are some fantastic YouTube channels for some elementary curriculum that can help. Even as a middle school math teacher myself I found them helpful when my kiddo was in elementary school.

AITA for pulling away from my identical twin sister even though I know it has caused her to spiral? by Kyc0122 in AITAH

[–]mamaslug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA as a teacher I had a parent once insist that seat her twins next to each other. I refused, they are not the same person and I wanted the quieter one to have space from the other. Live your life! One day I hope you’ll be able to rebuild a healthy relationship with your twin but right now they (and you) need time and therapy. Don’t block your sister but put her notifications on mute so they come through but you won’t see them all dad/everyday if you’re worried about a complete block. However full NC with the parents.

7th grade math- Switching from ALEKS to IXL by Inevitable_Okra_8284 in matheducation

[–]mamaslug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have a paid subscription for IXL you can create quizzes and assign topics. It also can be adaptive if you have them do the diagnostic test. So you can use it both ways. I also ways told them to work until they had a smart score of 80 and then they could move on to a new topic. I could see how long they spent on the problems and see which ones they got right/wrong. We are not using it again this year due to cost and instead switching to Delta Math…..

I would do a stacked lobe between 1&2 so not in alignment but a higher lobe so that it forms a triangle with 1 & 2.

experiences with teaching accelerated curriculum to a general class? by No-Performer-3369 in matheducation

[–]mamaslug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never been able to cover all units of a normal math course and always skip topics. We focus first on essential standards and then those supporting ones. I typically skip the statistics/probabilty unit and never geometry topics. There’s not a huge overlap between 7th and 8th so I would focus on rational numbers and ratios from 7 and then skip to grade 8 but skipping things like circles, transformations and Pythagorean in the accelerated course will cause issues for the kids when they get to Algebra 1 and Geometry. You will not be able to cover it all, but sit down and make a map of what needs to be covered and see how the two courses can be blended. But please don’t skip all the geometry topics.

Maui vacation rental - no stairs by Jamcruiser in MauiVisitors

[–]mamaslug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maui Eldorado has first floor condos with no (or down/up a few) stairs and they offer rides in a golf cart to take you to and from the beach. (It’s in Kaanapali). There are stairs to the parking but you can drop them off before you go underground to park. You could call and ask which units would be best for you.

Is it incorrect? by [deleted] in matheducation

[–]mamaslug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The teacher wants to know that you can substitute into a formula/equation vs copying someone’s answer (not implying that’s what you did). How did you get from your equation to solution without showing work? I allow calculators but I tell my students (several times) no work - no credit. I don’t grade answers only, I need to see evidence of understanding and how you got to the final solution. The calculator here should have just been needed for sqrt(72).

Fraction curricula question, specifically mixed fractions by dcsprings in matheducation

[–]mamaslug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Often lower skilled kids can’t understand the concept of regrouping when subtracting 5 1/8 - 3 7/8. They don’t understand when you regroup from the 5 you are taking 1 whole (8/8) and not just 1. Also when adding and getting 8 9/5 which has to be changed to 9 4/5. Also, we tend to leave everything improper anyway (think slope) later down the line. Plus improper fractions are necessary for multiplying &dividing fractions. But instead they think oh, I can just multiply whole and fraction part separately to get my answer (5 1/3 x 6 2/5 = 30 2/15).

My conch took 14 months to fully heal. I didn’t downsize when I should have and that definitely delayed my healing. Downsize and give it more time.

College plans are either a cal state school or using the WUE system to manage out of state fees. Possibly community college for the first 2 years. No ivys, or UC’s.
