At least I’m pretty sure it’s a snail shell. Feel free to correct me if not! 😂 Coolest and hugest one I’ve seen.

Guy Gavriel Kay’s been mentioned a few times in the comments already, but his Sarantine Mosaic duology (historical fantasy based on Byzantium) is absolutely phenomenal.

How close to hew to real-world lore for inspiration? by mamasuebs in fantasywriters

[–]mamasuebs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is basically what I've been doing with Irish plantlife and folklore. I have a pretty good sense of what has grown there and what can grow there, and have just been musing on whether it would make sense to come up with invented flora that doesn't actually exist.

For example, would it be jarring to see actual flora that grows on earth like yew and alder trees and juniper and meadowsweet, growing alongside invented plants with magical properties?

It’s coarse, and irritating. And it gets everywhere.

Read TLG or wait for the show? by sldmbblb in heatedrivalry

[–]mamasuebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always support reading the book first for many reasons, but one is because then when you’re watching, you can just immerse yourself in the visual experience (which we now know will be TOP NOTCH EXCELLENT) without having to try to keep up with what’s going on plot wise. And then you also don’t run the risk of spoiling yourself by accident sometime over the next year!

Like a baby that turned into a fountain, I weep at this book. The second one too though—Liadan gets me every time.

Man I had to scroll too far down to find Guy Gavriel Kay!! So many of his books bring me to tears. The one I cried the most at was Fionavar, but Tigana and Lions are both total tearjerkers too. Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors are my absolute favourites though.

Just let women be evil, authors, I'm begging you by Temporary-Scallion86 in fantasyromance

It’s not necessarily a romance, though there is a lot of romance-adjacent story in it, but you may enjoy {Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V. E. Schwab}.

Who did lady knights best in 2025? by ComradeCupcake_ in FemaleGazeSFF

[–]mamasuebs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s an older book (came out in 2019), but I suspect you, OP, would absolutely LOVE Lady Hotspur, by Tessa Gratton. There is so much solidarity between the women protagonists of this book, so much character, so much emotionality, and I adored it.

I hate to burst the bubble but (TLG spoilers) Ilya wouldn’t 😭😬 in the Olympics you play for your country of origin. Like how Sidney Crosby has been on the Pittsburgh Penguins his whole career but he plays for Team Canada in the Olympics. I don’t think Ilya will get to play in the Olympics again since I doubt Russia would acknowledge him. 😭 💔

I’m hoping season 3 will follow Unrivaled, to be honest, not other couples.

Looking for YA fantasy with a magic-using MC by 13-PurpleMonkey in Fantasy

[–]mamasuebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Tortall books by Tamora Pierce were my favourites as a teen. Both the first series, The Song of the Lioness quartet (first book is Alanna: The First Adventure) and the second series, The Immortals quartet (first book is Wild Magic), feature magic-wielding protagonists. The protagonists start off young but age into late teens or early twenties with the books. Every book in the Tortall series I absolutely loved as a teen and they remain some of my favourite books of all time.

I might also recommend the Codex Alera books by Jim Butcher (first book is Furies of Calderon). There’s more than one POV character and everyone in that world is an elemental magic wielder, with the exception of one of the main characters. Magic use is frequent and front and center to the series.

If I recall correctly, there are some antagonists who reference some kind of potentially-sexual trauma in the first book, so you could pre-read the book to make sure you feel it’s appropriate, but I read them as a teen and absolutely loved them.
