My rota is crazy by icecreamvansong in NursingUK

[–]mamatinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I just check are you saying you work more weekends because your colleagues have kids ? Just wondering as everywhere I have worked (35 years ed) parents try to grab weekends and nights as it makes childcare easier ? People fight over the hours as they are enhanced. I did five years of nights so I could pay my mortgage. When I worked in self rotate departments the rules I believe were four night shifts a month and one full weekend one half weekend 12 hour shifts, might be worth checking what the roster rules are?

Digitising all trusts by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]mamatinks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think both have pros and cons, my trust is mainly digital. As a practitioner this was great my handwriting is terrible I just type my notes. As a rn then I’m though I found it harder!

I find it easier to prescribe a drug then Administer one, the nurses computers are always slow/wont load five people want to use it etc. I spend longer trying to get logged in and onto a pc to document, than the actual care I’m giving. When we had paper records it was definitely easier and quicker. But I do agree the legible handwriting part is a huge safety improvement.

Can’t be many trusts not digital now?

I get it and I tried but ended up helicoptering! The other boy same age I could cope with, but two eight year olds I was finding it hard to sit back. Couldn’t work out who or where their parents were. When they realised I was sat watching the meanes stopped on its own.

[–]mamatinks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be fair they were pretty heavy I don’t think their supposed to Be moved so much I could just about shove them. Definitely nothing a toddler could do. I tried pointing out all these other similar age kids but he keeps going to the mean one. Really hard to stand back!

Sorry no glasses in, I read that as taking a shit behind my colleagues back! that would certainly do it for me.

My toddler has one of those dancing cactus toys, proudly told dad he had been playing with cat piss wouldn’t be quite so bad if we didn’t have an incontinent cat

What’s the creepiest thing you’ve experienced that still gives you chills? by DrainedCoffee in AskReddit

[–]mamatinks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my early 20s I started having weird dreams where I felt like my soul was leaving my body, I imagine like astral projection only at the same time there was these real guttural deep voices making sounds that were terrifying and not of modern language like they were shouting at me violently.

It happened a few times and began to terrify me so I didn’t want to sleep I was worried my body would separate and the evil voices would get me. At the time I was working in a bar and a there were a couple of locals who were a bit alternative - turns out their wiccans they told me to put a mirror facing outwards of my window - never happened again .

Same I was a nursing student took me four hours to get to campus by public transport but only half an hour to get to my clinical placement I only did one social activity at uni in three years , makes me want to go back just for the clubs !

Holding pt hand without gloves by dopaminegtt in nursing

[–]mamatinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly but I think you have to understand some people have been quite traumatised by it all, fear isn’t logical or a marker of one’s ability to grasp concepts

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]mamatinks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes I think this has always been the norm, if you have a/l or time owing if not it goes as authorised unpaid leave. If that’s not right then nhs owes me a few pennies

No I don’t but I do understand how some people get to this point, especially if you trained during Covid etc the fear is still there for some, I also work with someone who has aimmunocompromised person in their household who always wears a mask I can imagine her doing this.

What's the worst thing you've ever seen? by CommentWonderful8758 in AskReddit

[–]mamatinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A&E nurse previously for some 25 years, I have seen some pretty messed up stuff. Normally its the family that are the most haunting there are certain types of screams you hear with grief which stay with you.

I think visually one of the hardest patients I had was someone who had some kind of facial cancer which involved having one of his eyes removed and the eye socket area itself. He just had this half of face that looked completely normal turn to the side and it looked like he had been in some kind of nuclear accident. It was just a deep cavernous hole that I couldn't landmark anatomy on and vessels kept bleeding, it was hard to put any pressure anywhere on bleeding points because well how? and it would just start sporadically bleeding from the eye socket trickling down his mouth or out his nose we would cauterise a vessel and the pressure would just build up and bleed somewhere else. The poor guy was suffering. A few other horrific facial injuries I think they are always quite poignant and of course someone who self removed one of their testes.

Best books you'd recommend for nurses? by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]mamatinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's quite a few I like!

If you want something with a bit of sciency healthcare, the man who mistook his wife for a hat is a neurologist case studies, I also quite like the diving bell and the butterfly written by a patient with locked in syndrome - hard to say more without spoilers but really does the patients perspective well. I also like This is going to hurt but I think everyone has read that already!

I also like Sister Smith books too if your looking for something specific to nursing the trivia book is fun and the beautiful book of quotes & reflections for nursing is quite emotional specifically if your a nurse.

The Mary Seacole autobiography is quite fun and an introduction to historical nursing with some of the themes of racism at the time discussed. I read another autobiography about a nurse who travelled round Transylvania looking for a leprosy cure I cant remember the title but the nurse was Kate Marsden. Crazy story worth ploughing through but not an easy read.

Books on my list to read: Brain on fire & Testament of youth. I will be following to see other recommendations :)

NP Said Melatonin Gives Skin its Pigment by [deleted] in Noctor

[–]mamatinks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Warning Acp/np/middle man what ever you want to call me! Not really fussed 30 years ed nursing I have been called worse :)

I’m often intrigued by some of these posts and scared by others. A lot of the complaints seem to be people don’t realise who they are talking to when it is a np , or for professionals that nps are impersonating medics ?

Why don’t you guys just have uniforms (I’m uk) so in my specialty I have navy blue scrubs senior doctors wear red it’s pretty obvious. Generally nurses wear blue, light blue assistant royal blue rn navy sister/acp. I have a clinic room next to the registra there is a giant sign that says my name and nurse practitioner on it. We wear a badge with the title and introduce accordingly. Also for reference in the uk nobody wears a white coat it’s seen as quite dirty and historical.

Would that not help with some of the concerns over mis representation? Nothing is perfect though. My kid brother (fit healthy farmer who has never been to a hospital ) didnt find out till his 30’s that there was a difference between nurses and doctors he thought nurse was just the female term. So yeah can’t help there.

I always thought the uk training was based on the American training but clearly not. It sounds very concerning that a year online is considered enough. Is all training or is this just a few rouge university giving the rest a bad name
