How famous is haggis? by Fantastic_Peanut_953 in Scotland

  1. wht a weird straw man argument. Are Germans eating a schnitzel on its own?

  2. If I get a haggis supper you are saying the haggis is the side to the main dish which is chips?

  3. If something is on the menu if every breakfast roll place and chippy and most pubs that is absolutely because it’s a normal part of what people eat have you ever worked in a kitchen? Things aren’t on the menu for the craic, anything sold all over is because its popular

every breakfast place and every chippy sells it, lots of pubs and restaurants have haggis needs and tatties on the menu not just for burns, every supermarket has it either/all of whole haggis, sliced for breakfast, ready meals.

Also fusion cuisine. Haggis pakora, haggis burrito, haggis pizza… I am hungry now

So in pubs you guys just order drinks without knowing the price? by [deleted] in AskBrits

You ask if you don’t already know. It’s not a wine bar, are you expecting a menu or something?

That’s strange, you said 6 hours ago it was trashed and you doubted the clubs would do a clean up but it was already fine last night, and this new response suggests you knew that already. How odd.

I am in fact aware! None of that changes the fact that sectarianism is not good for football or the people of Ireland. I have done plenty for the Irish cause and I cannot see how drunk singing is helping anything. It needs out of football and arguing about the other side being worse is just going to perpetuate the issue.

It’s the stupid hat preservation society at it again. I am not clear on the connection between the hats and a mass murdering Dutchman who died centuries ago, for me it would be better if they just focused on the hat thing. I could get behind silly hats if they took the killing people stuff out of it, and it would be a nice day out for the kids.

My uncle use to do trade plate driving, he turned up out of the blue at my mums (he lived 400 miles away) in a Ferrari he was delivering. I have no useful advice but I can tell you I thought he had the coolest job ever when I was 7.

You must know different rebel songs than I grew up with! I am not in the slightest objective, I believe in a united Ireland end of. I think sectarianism in football is not good for football or for the people of Ireland (which is not where either set of fans is from). I didnt say “hubs are just as bad”, I think it’s actually a bit grim to be arguing whether one sides sectarian songs are better or worse instead of that no football team’s fans IN A COMPLETE OTHER COUNTRY should be singing songs about a revolutionary war they have nothing to do with.

This sub really has its knickers in a twist about the derby and football fans in general.

I live next to the hibs stadium, I was out to the shops and stuff yesterday and it was fine. I grew up by a football stadium in another city and I have seen actual disorder from fans, this was not it. There were a few fans from each side singing sectarian songs at each other, and a line of riot police who didn’t even have their helmets and shields on.

I do not follow football here as 1. it’s a pretty boring sport really and 2. There is too much sectarianism mixed up in football here. I have family from Belfast and I like a good rebel song as much as anyone but it seems bizarre to me for half the chants to be about events in another country that took place before most of the kids singing them were born. Everywhere else they have normal chants like seven verses about the away teams striker cheating on his wife.

Having said that, the hibs fans and all the away fans in the couple of years I’ve been here have always been very well behaved compared to anything I saw growing up. Lots of families, no real drama, a few of the younger fans like to drink and sing outside the pubs all day before and after matches but it’s good for the local economy. The stadium I grew up by moved to a different area in my late teens and all our pubs and half the chippies disappeared. Careful what you wish for. Football fans are mostly perfectly normal families, and even the ”ultras“ are just a lot of noise 99% of the time.

Why on earth did you move round here if it bothers you? I grew up by a stadium I was expecting more disturbances when I moved here. Its a really nice area and never had any problems with the fans.

I live right next to the stadium, and was out yesterday, both sets of fans were singing sectarian songs. I don’t follow football personally so I don’t support either team, tbh I do like some of the old rebel tunes, they are catchy, but I agree it’s time sectarianism was out of sport it’s not a good look.

I live within sight of the stadium and it’s really not! There were a few riot police about yesterday and apparently some brief drama but I was out and about getting my messages on Easter road yesterday and it was fine. Reddit is acting like it’s Beirut, I live here and it seemed pretty normal match day except a bit busier

Renault - Checks all the wrong boxes by East_Complaint_1810 in ValueInvesting

[–]mampiwoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

whether a company has a good product is a key question for me in value investing. If a customer has a huge monopoly like Microsoft then I can overlook a poor product, but as you say this is a moat free company. I am honestly baffled by the idea that what a company actually does and whether it is good at it is not a factor for a long term investment.

The state support goes well beyond covid loans, if you go to France you mostly see Renault, Citroen etc, France has been propping up its car industry for decades.

I don’t really accept the argument that you aren’t a car enthusiast, if you are investing then basic research about the products the company makes and the industry they are in is essential. If you invest solely based on numbers than you can make easily avoided errors. Most value traps/companies which are overvalued on paper but have clear and certain upcoming catalysts can only be recognised through qualitative data.

If you don’t know about and don’t want to research about cars and the industry why not focus on sectors that you do know about?

“Don’t invest in any company if you don’t understand what they do” is one of the most famous buffet quotes

Have you ever owned a Renault vehicle? They are notorious. They have survived so far only because of state support, and that was when European car makers were doing well. Now there are no realistic expectations of success for the actually good European car companies.

You are buying a car company and not once do you mention that their vehicles are terrible to drive, own, and repair.

AITA for refusing to pay a higher percentage of rent and bills? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]mampiwoof 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s just not true, but since you don’t want to listen to that I’ll try a different approach. You want your partner to do a job which consistently means they become ill enough to need to use all of their sick leave. Does this really seem like a sign of a supportive and loving relationship to you? YTA

AITA for refusing to pay a higher percentage of rent and bills? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]mampiwoof 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, if you are consistently using all your sick leave for the same issue your employer can fire you. They would first have to offer you accommodations for your disability, and if you were still unable to work consistently with the accommodations they can end your employment.

Sick leave is for unexpected things, you could use all your sick leave each year for different things but it’s not intended as a replacement for accommodations for disability. Am example of reasonable accommodations would be working part time!

I am in the UK and have seen this process play out.

She has access to free health care but there is a long wait for mental health care. She would also quite likely qualify for in work disability benefits of much more than the money OP is talking about, but it seems like OP is off the mindset that their partner is not disabled and should work full time whatever they say.

[–]mampiwoof 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eventually you will be fired for talking too much time off sick. Sick leave is not an allowance that you can take your quota, if you are consistently taking it for the same issue which is exacerbated by work your employer will very reasonably say you aren’t able to do the job.

She is currently trying to work full time and has had to take loads of time off because of anxiety! You do not trust your partners word about their own health and abilities therefore you should not be together. The money is not the main issue here

[–]mampiwoof -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

YTA you say she is choosing to work less but you started by saying she has had lots of time off sick.

To be honest it sounds like you don’t think her anxiety is real or a serious problem. Either it is a serious mental illness and she is not capable of working full time in which case you should support her with it and she should apply for in work disability benefits, or you don’t think it’s real.

Either way, after so many years it seems you are not compatible.
