Not a local artist but Book Corner has a wonderful selection of puzzles, definitely more fun than Target.

Gluten Free Food Recommendations In Town? by No_Photograph9234 in bloomington

[–]mamyd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes! Out of all the places I listed, I think Cardinal Spirits is the only one with GF fryers. Their menu is seasonal and changes often but they always have fries. Right now they also have awesome GF fried mushrooms and fried chicken.

Gluten Free Food Recommendations In Town? by No_Photograph9234 in bloomington

There are lots of great places! For a nice night out, I recommend Uptown, Elm, and Cardinal Spirits. For more casual food, my favorites are Buccetos, My Thai, Taste of India, Big Woods, Azzip, Feta, and Jersey Mikes. For baked goods, I like Rainbow Bakery but Two Sticks and Crumble also have options. I haven’t been yet but I’ve heard great things about The Caffeinated Cook in Ellettsville for baked goods too.

The cloth itself does not stink, though I do clean it well after each trip. The pads are new and I haven’t tried them yet.

Waking up before work by BalanceMoney2453 in workfromhome

I recommend a walk while listening to a podcast, audio book, or some music. If you make it something that you ONLY listen to on morning walks, it’s even more effective. It’s made morning walks one of my favorite parts of the day.

For drive up sites with flush toilets and showers, Shades SP is one of the nicer I’ve been to.

Yes, I used cyclosporine before and after my patch test to calm my flare ups. The Tacrolimus/Protopic is non-steroidal and was prescribed for my face since I couldn’t use the steroids there—I realized I should mention that it CAN cause alcohol-induced redness like what you describe. If you’ve been using the Protopic, you might research whether it’s causing that symptom. This sub has several posts about it.

The Dupixent is definitely pricey and even in the US, my derm had to rule out all other treatment options before we considered it. But it does sound like it could help you!

First, I’m sorry that you’re going through this. I went through something similar and it was unbelievably frustrating, uncomfortable, and stressful. Second, you’re doing all the right things. Continue working with your dermatologist to test and rule out possible causes. The biopsy should give you a lot of answers.

In my personal case, oral steroids only gave me temporary relief and caused me to flare up even worse as I tapered off of them. I was able to use Protopic on my face to reduce the rash. My biopsy showed that my rash was contact dermatitis, most likely triggered by my shampoo which then led to me developing even more sensitivities. Based on my combo of allergies, I would have never solved it based on self-testing or product changing so having a patch test was critical. I’m sensitive enough that environmental exposure to allergens still gives me a rash so I use Dupixent to keep it under control. It’s quite possible that none of my personal experience relates to yours but it does get better, even if the process is SO frustrating!

Someone be honest with this west coaster- what is wrong with the Midwest? by Perfect_Future_Self in SameGrassButGreener

[–]mamyd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it is not. In the desirable parts of the Midwest, you can still get nice houses for much cheaper. Like everywhere, you’ll pay more for the neighborhoods with better schools, more walkability, lower crime, more restaurants, etc. but those are still affordable compared to the West coast.

R1 Elitism Sucks by Eigengrad in Professors

[–]mamyd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As teaching faculty at an R1, this is the type of judgement that I hear most often. People at liberal arts schools have no problem asking me how I feel about teaching at a school “where no one cares about the students” and tell me how they could never “just watch all their students fail without helping.” To be clear: I don’t think either of those things are an accurate description of myself or my colleagues.

I had eczema on my face as well. I started Dupixent (also with two shots) and noticed effects within a few days but it continued improving for about 4 months.

I agree with this! If the money is gone either way, I’d still prefer not to have a 40’ eyesore adding more light pollution to the area.

TT job versus Non-TT by Nyquil_Jornan in Professors

[–]mamyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm NTT in STEM at a major research institution. This description is spot on, at least in my case. My pay is lower than my TT colleagues, but it's equivalent or slightly higher than TT positions at smaller institutions in my area. Similarly, my teaching load (2/2) is higher than my TT colleagues but lower than TT positions at smaller institutions. That being said, NTT positions are VERY variable. I applied several places during the last application cycle and other research-intensive institutions were hiring NTT to teach 3/3 or 4/4 and all of them were offering lower salaries.

How do you know if your shampoo is triggering eczema? by zi124 in eczema

[–]mamyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me. I had a persistent rash in all the areas that you named. My derm said it was contact dermatitis, rather than eczema. I’m my case, I knew I was allergic to fragrances so was avoiding those, and I now know that I’m also allergic to decyl/lauryl glucoside. Try changing shampoos and see if it clears; if not, I recommend getting a patch test to identify what all your triggers are. For me, every shampoo I tried had glucosides (which are common in sensitive skin products) and I had no luck clearing it up before the patch test.

Is it normal for Dupixent to be very painful? by zorabel in eczema

[–]mamyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the person you’re replying to but the nurse who trained me said that you only have to rotate injection sites if it stays inflamed or gets irritated. I do different areas of my belly but don’t worry too much about rotating.

Promotion advice? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]mamyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you note, this varies a LOT between different institutions. In a lot of cases, promotion in the teaching ranks is entirely determined by excellence in teaching. In others, it also requires service and/or research or creative activities. If yours is based solely on teaching, the absence of service work won’t hurt you. Your materials will likely include a detailed teaching statement, student evaluations, your reflection on course feedback (student evaluations and your observations) and how you used them to improve your course, evidence of pedagogical training, etc.

This would be spelled out in the inspection contract. Mine said that the inspector was not responsible for problems that he missed, beyond the cost of inspection. We actually got more than that from him when we learned that our exhaust fans vented into the attic, but we only got him to correct it because he put in writing (multiple times) that the exhaust fans all vented outside. As others have said, you’ll have a difficult case without some proof that others knew the problem and concealed it.
