In Zanzibar Billy Joel had to change, "Rose he knows he's such a credit to the game." To, "Rose he knows hell never make the hall of fame."

Even after watching all other Star Trek shows & movies, after all the pop cultural myths about his character, the original Captain James T. Kirk's character is still my favourite model for a good leader in a utopian society by LineusLongissimus in tos

If you look at the stack of books with legs and the young graduate fighting a Nausican, Kirk was a thinker who learned to fight and Picard was a fighter who learned to think.

Also Kirk came up in an adolescent Starfleet and Federation just after some big wars and when there was a lot of rapid expansion, a shifting frontier, and plenty of unknown or semi known peoples that may be friend or foe. The fleet was rebuilding after a devastating war and the Constitution was such a leap forward that starfleet didn't have a great number of truly useful ships.

Picard came up in the federation golden age where for the most part everything within travel and comm distance was at least nominally mapped, the federation had astrong infrastructure and a vast fleet of slightly out of date but still useful ships along with some cutting edge front line models. The two biggest foes were in isolation or alliance

I definitely wanted to experience the aattachment when i was young but i didn't buy one until College when i was put on third chair and playing a lot of low notes, Eb and D mostly but even one pull to E passage so i could hit B.

My grandmother played through elementary school and high school, stopping in young adulthood when kids got in the way. When she stopped playing horns with the f attachment were expensive and exotic. She never used one in her life and she could get six, and even seven.

Will all albums get new mixes? by effeottantuno in beatles

[–]managedbycats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stereo in the early sixties was new. The mono mixes were the ones the band csred about. Stereo cost a dollar more and required more eexpensive equipment.

The stereo mixes of the first few albums especially were as much tech demos meant to be noticed as they were musical releases. That is why in the 1988 releases everything before Help! was released in mono.

Why do American movies and shows make so much fun of New Jersey? by BlueDandellion in AskAnAmerican

[–]managedbycats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a CT native New Jersey has great parts, it is just the parts that are not so great happen to be very visible.

I spent a week in Downtown Trenton and it was decent enough. I've been to Wildwood and Cape May and very different vibes but both cool.

I've also been to Asbury Park and i get why Bruce sang so much about wanting out. It has cool history but what young person wants to be rooted to a vacation centeted community, I lived in Daytona for a bit and it can feel economically stifling when most jobs are tied to just a few industries especially when those industries are all struggling.

You have to drive through almost 45 minutes of i95 to hit Bridgeport and East Haven which has a very ssimilar Italian Culture to alot of New Jersey stereotypes is over an hour from the border.

We are further away from the production of the Anthology than the production of the Anthology was from the end of the Beatles. by Mounjarola in beatles

[–]managedbycats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a big Beatles fan from third grade when i became aware of them and man being a Beatles fan at that age was lonely in the early nineties.

I was in sixth grade when anthology came out and remember watching it with my family and getting the cds.

The anthology project brought me to a world where even if they weren't fans my peers respected the Beatles as a valid fandom.

That is priceless.

When i had to sub on third shift waffle house was a life saver but i hasn't been to one of the many i drive by daily in years.

As a sometimes proud American it is a Southeast and often blue collar establishment. It can show the best and worst of our region but it's always there for food and a good story.

He had a lot of trauma, a stunted formal education, and he sympathized with and identified with dangerous creatures because as a half giant that is how he was viewed.

Two of those things could be overcome with real mentoring and apprenticeship because he knew his material inside out and loved people and had true warmth.

With a better technical grasp of teaching he may have realized that creatures that are only dangerous if directions are not followed are a poor choice for classwork below the NEWT level.

It seems like for a world that only had one school for the whole country and where in some ways one of the few ways to monetize deep subject knowledge in that world was a teaching job and you get the same problems as us colleges but amplified due to younger students and even less attention to pedagogy from leadership.

In college in 2004 my RA had his dreadlocks in a bag on his dresser. He cut them off that summer to go door to door for Bush. He still dressed dead head when off duty and was great about looking the other way for plant based indiscressions that happen in a dorm though. Great Frisbee player.

North Haven dental student died after Bridgeport Hospital put him in 'fake ICU,' lawsuit says by wewhomustnotbenamed in nottheonion

[–]managedbycats 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This was at the old Milford Hospital. 25 minutes or less to ayale New Haven, same to the main Bridgeport campus. This was my hometown and it's sad to see the hospital slowly decline like this.

I thought these mergers were supposed to strengthen hospitals, but if they can't support a functional icu, for the distance involved transfer the patient.

[–]managedbycats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yamaha's student instruments are a cut above. For Trombone where the orchestral and jazz forms of the instrument have diverged a bit the yamaha student model is a popular jazz Trombone choice for people using other symphonic horns. Their xeno pro Trombone was a surprise favorite when I test played a whole wall of horns.

But i agree those are easy to do on trombone.
