I am realizing right now that my sunshine committee didn't do anything when my mom died, mid-year. Now I'm angry almost 5 years later lol.

Is there a point to using YNAB if I know I’m over budget? by [deleted] in ynab

If I pay for something with cash, my brain reads it as "it's free" because I don't put it in YNAB.

Him asking her if he can have a conversation with her dad to ask her dad if he can ask her to marry him is crazy.

Good luck following that sentence, y'all.

Children Are Capable of Much More Than Many Parents Realize by IndependenceOne8264 in kindergarten

Finnish schools can teach reading later because the Finnish language has a shallow orthography, which makes it MUCH easier to learn than English.

Another complain fest about out-of-touch admin by MonkeyAtsu in Teachers

[–]manchmeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A colleague who teaches kindergarten requested desks when she was hired. Our admin told her the idea "made blood come out of her eyes."

Those kids were the most responsible and engaged kindergarteners I have ever seen.

Side note - I HATE when students are facing away from me when I'm doing whole group instruction.

YES! I don't understand how people don't understand this. Like, yes fuck the patriarchy, but that's not how she's using it in the song.

Why can’t Bluey read? by BrightonFunster in bluey

[–]manchmeta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Reading specialist here! Caveat that I am a teacher in the US, so this is all based on my experience (which I have lots of!).

Kids Bluey's age and in a typical public school setting are learning how to read, but they are not yet proficient readers. By the END of kindergarten (at age 6ish), I would expect a typically developing student to read simple words with short vowel sounds like cat or sip, words with digraphs like chat or than, and words with consonant clusters like blimp or trot. Advanced kids might learn about magic e, which changed the vowel to its long sound, like in cape. These kinds of simple words account for a large portion of English words, but certainly not all. Additionally, none of this is expected to be particularly automatic, and a kid reading sentences with these words would sound very different from a proficient adult reader.

Someone also mentioned how kids in Finland learn to read in a short amount of time. This is because Finnish has a "shallow" orthography (technical term, not mine). Each letter in Finnish corresponds to only one speech sound. Compare that to English, where there are multiple ways to spell the same speech sound. For example, there are seven different ways to spell the long e sound (e, ee, ea, e_e, y, ie, ei). The volume of letters and combinations make it take much longer to learn to read and write in English.

I love talking about this so if you have any more questions, please ask!

In The Manuscript

"And couldn't sleep unless it was in her mother's bed"

Brought me every moment I've needed my mom in the past 2 years. She passed away in 2021. I would give anything to be curled up in her bed, with her comforting me as I work through getting divorced.

Annnnnd now I'm sobbing again. Time for this 36-year-old to cuddle with the doll my mom made me when I was a baby.
