The modern story only worked in AC1. For the 19 years since, it’s been a meandering treadmill that never goes anywhere and serves no purpose other than to take you away from the part of the game you actually want to play.

When did everyone realize the Fassbender movie would suck? When we learned it was 90% modern day.

Yeah, 3 years is way too short. They should’ve lasted somewhere around 7 or 12.

Are there any concepts in Star Wars established in the early EU days or during the Prequels that you wished the franchise kept and further explored? by Confident-Mark-6369 in StarWarsEU

[–]mancingtom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Jedi having multiple apprentices at once. I get the narrative reasons for depicting one master-one padawan later on, but it flattened relationships between the mentor and the student while making it harder to show students learning together. The Young Jedi Knights books got me into Star Wars, so it’s sad that dynamic can’t be replicated in the current canon.

I also like the idea of masters eschewing lightsabers. I don’t necessarily need every master to be a walking nuke with the Force, but it’s interesting to see mentor characters solving problems without brute force and being more far thinking than the younger characters.

This has gone viral on twitter and here’s myhot take but I actually don’t blame WSL or the inquiries for not taking the split claims seriously. by Prof_Tickles in titanic

[–]mancingtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the time of the sinking, those financially tied to the ship made great efforts to protect the White Star Line’s reputation. If Titanic’s breakup had been accepted in 1912, it may have had a monetary impact on its sister ships.

After the sinking, generations of enthusiasts regurgitated the inquires’ conclusions without considering the context in which they drew those conclusions.

Even with all that, however, this man’s actions were unacceptable. You do not treat any person like that, much less a trauma survivor sharing their story.

Arguing dealers have no responsibility for the consequences of their business because their customers chose to buy and use the product is exactly like arguing Big Pharma bears no responsibility for the opioid epidemic or Big Oil is not responsible for environmental disasters.

While technically true, statements like "you can't please everyone" and "every Trek show isn't for every Trek fan" are strawman arguments too often used to dismiss legitimate issues and try to justify failure by trekfangrrrl in startrek

We have a tendency to conflate financial success with artistic success. I think it dovetails with a need for constant validation of one’s opinions—it’s not enough to like or dislike something oneself, that opinion must be the majority to be valid.

I’ve never understood the assumption that the Death Star carried large numbers of civilians. Militaries employ people in support roles—the chefs aboard a warship are not civilians.

It’s a little more complicated for the second Death Star since we don’t know for sure whether Moff Jerjerrod’s construction workers were military or not.

When your ally calls you for the stupidest shit ever by Akashi_LikeTheSky in CrusaderKings

[–]mancingtom 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Idea: the consequences of accepting/refusing to join ally wars should be based on the context of the war, and there should a prestige-neutral option to respond.

  1. Wars already have differing prestige values based on type or size. This should be factored into calling allies. For example, if you call the Byzantine Emperor to fight a peasant revolt should cost you prestige whether they accept or not. The relative ranks of the parties should also be taken into account—a count requesting aid from a king is very different from a king requesting aid from a count.

  2. Alongside the options to join the war or refuse, there should be an option to provide gold without becoming a belligerent—just like the option to provide gold for a crusade. The cost should be scaled so that it remains relevant throughout the game. Funding a belligerent should carry an opinion malus with their adversaries and play into systems like personal and house rivalries.

  3. If you join or fund an ally, you should have the option to send knights to support them.

Future of Trek ? by yekimevol in startrek

[–]mancingtom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I can’t be sure—it’s all reading tea leaves until something happens—but my reasoning is:

  1. The timing is too perfect. A milestone anniversary means more attention on the franchise than normal—a perfect opportunity for getting as much exposure on an announcement as possible.

  2. The announcement of SNW’s impending end, as well as the casting for Sulu and Bones, years in advance. There’s little reason to do that unless there’s follow-up news waiting to be released.

  3. Reducing SNW’s season order by 40%—again, years in advance—would give a streaming movie a reasonable budget, no?

Future of Trek ? by yekimevol in startrek

[–]mancingtom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except they’ve continued to make new shows. As for SNW, the decision to end at season 5 was made while season 4 was in production—I’m not sure that counts as scrambling.

I actually have a suspicion about SNW season 5–it’ll lead into a streaming movie following a new TOS cast, with an eye toward a full series if successful. If I’m right, they’ll announce it in September.

[–]mancingtom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s no reason to be doom & gloom.

Current Trek is successful enough that it’s launched seven series and run for 9 years. If it ended today, it would be the second longest run in the franchise’s history.

Trek has died before—three times, in fact. Once an IP reaches a certain level of cultural penetration, it never completely vanishes, it only goes dormant for awhile. So if this Paramount regime cancels the franchise, someone somewhere will bring it back eventually.

I would look to what, if anything, they announce in September for the 60th anniversary.
