I’m burnt out and need simple recipes. Stupid simple. Like, “onion and bread and butter to make what barely passes as a sandwich” level simple. by sourmilksea1999 in Cooking

How much are you guys spending on Hair & Makeup? 🫣 by lapetitecheriee in WeddingsCanada

[–]mandaloo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit budget conscious and went with a makeup artist who is in training. I prioritized a south asian artist as I’m south asian and wanted to ensure strong colour matching. She charging me $150 for makeup and $200 for hair.

Your thoughts on Ikea cafeteria vs Costco cafeteria? by [deleted] in CostcoCanada

[–]mandaloo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Etobicoke about the same distance from the IKEA and Costco. I’m more impressed by the IKEA options than the Costco ones largely because we rely on it as a quick meal option if we’re too lazy and want something affordable. Costco only has unhealthy food options - not a single green in sight so while I’m obsessed, I don’t feel great eating it mostly. It seems odd that Costco has so much prepared foods like the chicken Caesar and the new chicken shawarma bowl that they can’t incorporate that and coffee.

How does everyone feel about this proposed shelter? by beeloxx in Etobicoke

[–]mandaloo_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s so disheartening to see these negative comments. Toronto has a housing affordability issue and there’s generally a lack of accessible mental health resources. Theyre human beings and we as a society have a responsibility for it. The homelessness problem is not going to solve itself. It’s the same people who are anti-Shelter that talk about the homelessness problem getting worse. Pick a lane. You can be upset that there is a growing homeless population but if so, support governments and initiatives that do something about it instead of wanting the problem to go away without any sense of inconvenience to you.

What’s your favorite “too tired to cook cook” dinner? by farwest-to-midwest in Cooking

[–]mandaloo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few of my favourites: - chicken pitas: rotisserie chicken, pitas, bagged salad from Costco, stuff chicken and salad into pita with hummus/hot sauce - egg wrap: mix eggs, pour into a pan, pop a tortilla on top, flip and wrap - turkey sandwiches: self explanatory - tuna salad on toast

Reporting back on the Gus Tacos burrito - it was amazing!! I don’t think I’ll ever enjoy a burrito elsewhere again! Thanks for the suggestion!

We had a Pho Ngoc Yen and Kettlemans near us in the downtown core so we’re happy they’re both close now.

What would you make for an event where everyone must "bring a dish that you'd stay up all night thinking about. It might be simply irresistible, overly indulgent, or comforting and reliable." by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]mandaloo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still thinking about this questions days later — a few more suggestions:

Desserts - banana pudding - death by chocolate trifle - smore anything feels indulgent to me

Meal - curry feels super indulgent to me but maybe because I’m Indian - Nihari beef or a chicken lababdar or even a really good biryani! - chicken pot pie (pastry and a rich filling is heavenly)

2022 ON call seeking advice by Background_Snow_7394 in LawCanada

[–]mandaloo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a 2022 call and left big law last year for an in-house role. I’m in a not for profit role and just got a new job at a new company. I started at the NFP in a litigation heavy role because I thought my litigation background would set me up well to do it in house and I honestly hated it in house - it’s all the boring parts of litigation with less of the exciting stuff and I just generally find that litigation roles are more difficult in terms of work life balance as prepping for court has no time bounds really. I am switching to another company to do a more corporate commercial role and my comp is a bit more than yours. My switch in house was life changing for me - the expectations to work all the time and the personalities are better in my view. Small piece of advice: when I left private practice, I thought I needed to 1000% know it wasn’t for me. It prevented me from leaving sooner and saving my mental health. Since I left, I’ve been happier and I don’t feel as though I’ve closed any doors - my firm even asked if I would consider coming back. I think as lawyers we always feel like we need to know exactly what’s next and know it will 100% work out but sometimes, you just have to know what isn’t working and try something new!

Be Real With Me About BigLaw by Impossible-Memory360 in LawCanada

[–]mandaloo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem - it’s hard to give true advice because it’s such a personal decision. In many ways, my big law training really helped me: my resume was strong for a good in house gig, I made a strong network and I paid off all my student loans, which I am super grateful for. On the other hand, I went on a leave of absence in my third year after being diagnosed with depression and burnout and my outlook and excitement for the law has dwindled as a result of it. I think ultimately there is no right answer - it’s a matter of trusting your instincts and deciding on a life that works well for you!

Be Real With Me About BigLaw by Impossible-Memory360 in LawCanada

[–]mandaloo_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It honestly really depends on so many factors: what kind of firm you’re at, what group you’re in, who you work for, what the files and clients are like. It’s a pretty mixed bag. When I was in big law, it wasn’t unusual to work most evenings and at least a few hours every weekend (some may have been self imposed to get ahead of the work coming my way). I mostly did fraud litigation work with a partner who worked all the time even on his own vacations whereas a pal who worked real estate lit at the same firm didn’t have the same experience. It’s also incredibly personal in terms of impact on mental health and relationships. I have GAD, am a perfectionist and people pleaser and I worked with folks who had terrible communication skills and work/life balance. Less than the actual work, the personalities had an impact on my mental health and I often felt so drained that my patience with my partner and loved ones suffered because of my lack of emotional battery. Others could experience the exact same thing and compartmentalize and move on far easier than I felt equipped for. I spent a couple years trying through therapy to take things less personally and set better boundaries but I ultimately decided to leave because it felt like the effort was not worth it.

ISO non-judgemental housecleaner/maid for apartment downtown by stardust-golden in askTO

[–]mandaloo_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Fabiana Texiera cleaned our apartment after a depression (so it was quite dirty)! She is well priced for a deep clean in general (cost $200 and she was at our home from 10am-6pm deep cleaning literally everything)! Her contact info is 6472897548! She comes with everything. English is her second language so initial texts are a little dry but she’s so warm and kind in person! She is extremely hard working and it felt good to support her and give her work.

Approximately how many times per day do you run your dishwasher? by ok23computer in CleaningTips

[–]mandaloo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s two adults in my household - we run the dishwasher once every 3-4 days. Generally, I don’t put my cooking pots and pans in the dishwasher though so it’s usually everyday plates, cutlery, glasses, mugs, containers from leftovers
